I was really disappointed with my experience at Shuckin' Shack. The service was poor from the moment we arrived. Our server was dismissive, came across as rude, and made us feel like we were an inconvenience instead of valued customers. The food was also disappointing. The shrimp and grits tasted like they were made with instant grits rather than fresh, homemade grits. The chicken tenders tasted like frozen, pre-made tenders, and the burger patty also seemed like a frozen patty instead of a fresh one. Overall, the quality of the food did not match what we expected. Between the rude service and the disappointing meal, we left feeling frustrated. I hope the restaurant takes customer service more seriously and works on improving the quality of the food. read more

I recently read an article about seafood restaurants in each state and Shuckin' Shack was listed for NC. We had to try this place out and it did not disappoint. We tried several apps and shared the fish and chips (recommended by the article). OMG, crisp fries and amazing fried fish, so fresh and not overly breaded, just perfect. The waitress was very nice and recommended a Michelada which was yummy. We've already returned since writing this review. Had to get me some oysters! We are new to the Durham area and excited about all the new restaurants we get to try. This is our third adventure. We had chargrilled oysters-two flavors. Both were excellent but we like the cheddar jalepeño the best. We each had a beer and enjoyed our chat with Rene, the bartender. She had a lot of great recommendations for good eats in the area. "Seafood and oyster bar by Guasaca on Main Street in Durham" In the shopping Center between Parizade/ Duke Credit Union and Guasaca on Main Street in Durham, this place appeared a few years ago. My wife happened to be grabbing Guasaca, but I decided to give this a try instead (as to-go). There is some covered outdoor seating for those who want to enjoy the weather or are still COVID-cautious. The interior has a rustic look with a long bar-style seating area and some table seating off to the right. I ordered the fish tacos. The base price was with cod, so I went with that rather than the mahi or shrimp upgrade options. I think it came with cheese too, but I asked them to hold that. The server was nice and told me it should be ready in about 8-10 minutes, and when I walked back in 8 minutes, she was just walking out with my food ready in a to-go box. The food comes as 2 tacos with 3 "fish-stick" sized batter-fried pieces of cod along with some lettuce and tomatoes. The fish was higher quality than frozen fish sticks-- they were pretty good fried dish. There was a hefty helping of chips on the side but far too little salsa. Cost was around $13 after tax and tip (with no other food and no drink). While it tasted good, realistically, I wouldn't come back here for that-- there are other places in town to get cheaper and better fish tacos (e.g., El Patron). Looking at the other reviews on Yelp, I see people rave about the lobster roll, so I might try that if/ when I come back depending on the price (which I don't remember and is not on their website). But overall, I did enjoy my food, and the service was friendly, so this is not a bad option to check out. read more

In addition to the oysters, we ordered a platter to share. The platter we ordered included raw oysters, shrimp, hush puppies, and coleslaw. We were going to a festival and stopped her because the reviews looked good. It is a somewhat small, cute little establishment located in a little strip mall. It was just after lunch, and a little before dinner when we arrived. There was only one other table being serviced, likely due to the time of day on a Saturday. Everything tasted like they just caught it, or just picked it from the garden and then cooked it. Fresh, fresh, fresh and wonderfully made. The Calamari was tender because ya'll know these restaurants will fry a squid to death and you ended up with something that tastes like chewy fried rubber. BUT THE COOK - definitely understood the assignment. The oysters were amazing! We tried all flavors (mine without bacon thank you) but so full of flavor again tender - perfect. The shrimp Tacos had SO MANY shrimp they were falling off the taco. Again, fried but tender and fresh and my salad - was just filling! Lot of veggies, and lots of shrimp. As we ate, more people came in and we noticed there were a lot of regulars. The bartender told us typically it's crowded with college students this time of day, but she expected it would be pretty busy in the evening around dinner time. They have outdoor seating and again, it was just a staff of two, the cook and the bartender, but such great customer service! My husband and I went to the Shuckin' Shack for a late (2pm) lunch. We were the only people there, so social distancing was easy! The server behind the counter wore both mask and gloves, as did the cooks that I could see through the serving window. Service was fast and courteous, and very caring. The calamari we started with was done perfectly, tender and melt-in-your-mouth inside, with a light, crunchy layer of breading on the surface. It was served with a Thai-style sweet chili sauce. Delicious! And such a generous portion! I had the garlic-parmesan oysters and side salad with tuna (pictured below). My husband got the crab balls (get your mind out of the gutter! ), but was concentrating on them so hard I couldn't get a photo. The service and food were first rate. A few moons ago, Captin Regis "Reggie Edwards," and myself (Michael Clarkstar) ventured out on a meetup-to celebrate the home going of one of our fallen comrades (friends)-here at the Shucking Shack. Let me illuminate my experience just a bit, as the environment is absolutely spacious; inviting, and the only thing missing was the mist of the wet sea spray, and the view of the ocean just beyond the open windows/exits. However, if the OBX (Outerbanks) of NC are not within your scheduling-The Shucking Shack will definitely be your newest hangout. The cuisine that I ordered was the fried calamari, served with freshly made cocktail sauce, and boy-dose the sauce pack an "eye-opening" punch. On the side of my perfectly prepared squid-I had an additional helping of French fries, served hot-without the residue that normally surrounds fries. I will definitely add-that the oil used hadn't (absolutely none) any foul aftertaste nor dis-coloration at all. Just delicious food-hot-fast, and complete perfection. I have to be critical here, which pains me to do so-however, whilst the only waitress on duty at The Shucking Shack was an excellent hostess, I would strongly recommend to The Shucking Shack to on-board additional crew to provide equal amounts of coverage for visiting customers. During our dining experience it could be perceived that The Shucking Shack was being crewed by only two (2) individuals (hostess and Chef). *While I do understand labor costs are vital parts of operation-maintaining outstanding customer service is paramount to any establishment. Not to mention... The wait staff should absolutely always have backup/teamwork to accomplish greatness. I digress in saying that nevertheless...
