My son has learned how to be more respectful, work hard for things he wants, all while learning Traditional Wushu. His confidence has always been high, but he has learned an understanding at his age of his abilities that is gentle, caring and respectful of others. He is also learning regularly how to work as a team. As an adult my wife and I have begun taking evening classes where we are learning the basics. I'm beginning overweight, out of shape and not flexible, and they have been fantastic! While I can't always keep up, they keep the expectations high for me, while at the same time help to make modifications that will improve my ability as I strive to catch up with those that are well beyond my ability. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of the training my family and I have received from Sifu Sean Kelly and Michael Wall: they provide a great mix of martial arts fundamentals along with practical application. Mo Duk Pai is a form of Kajukenbo which is an early mixed martial art that came out of Hawaii in the early 40's. This form of martial arts pulls from KArate, JUdo and jujitsu, KENpo, and BOxing and also incorporates elements of Muay Thai, Arnis/Eskrima, and Systema. Mo Duk Pai is awesome! The Mo Duk Pai community in the Portland area is a fantastic group of skilled martial artists that share their experience with all students. With three schools in Portland, there are a ton of classes you can take with some of the best people to train with. And, the classes are very affordable, especially with discounts for multiple family members. In addition to martial arts, check out Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) training with Michael Wall. I've done several classes with him and he is a fantastic resource and wealth of knowledge with respect to getting your body moving to its full range of motion and achieving your fullest potential. Even through the pandemic, Master Johnson went above and beyond to keep students engaged, whether that meant classes via Zoom or classes in the park. I have never done a sport in my life, and this past spring (2025) I got my black belt - at age 51! The classes are rigorous and the instructors are extremely skilled. In addition to getting a great workout and learning an incredible traditional martial art, I have discovered a community that is supportive and dedicated. This dojo is run by a husband and wife team. The husband is the senior Sensei and has been studying…read morekarate for most of his life. His wife has also bee a long time student. The atmosphere is very focused, respectful and encouraging for all levels. I enjoy the classical structure of the class and the drills. It is no-frills and focused on foundational principles as well as practical applications. Out of 8 classes per month, there is 1-4 sparring sessions which range in intensity appropriate to one's level. Every class focuses on dachi and kihon (stance and basics). Three quarters of the classes have some focus on kata. I prefer the strict kata learning system in this dojo to other dojos I have been in. Each belt is associated with at least one kata. The Sensei-student relationship is strong, supportive, but unflinchingly focused on excellence. Finally, the group of students are top notch. Nobody is out I prove a point, women are respected and it is never about ego or domination. Even when it gets a little hairy sparring. I recommend Portland Shotokan completely.
