Piggybacks BBQ & Catfish - Lake City, SC If you're ever in…read moreLake City, you have to stop by Piggybacks BBQ & Catfish--it's local, it's fun, and it's downright delicious. This isn't your average BBQ joint. It's a labor of love born right here at a hometown festival back in 2010, when Mitchell and his team first set up a table and tent and sold out their BBQ and hand-cut fries. Fast-forward to today, and they've grown into a full-on outdoor kitchen with some of the best eats in town. The wings and fish nuggets are addicting--crispy, flavorful, and never get old. The brisket is tender and smoky every time, and they've got a solid lineup of sandwiches that hit the spot. And let me tell you, the desserts? Divine. No lie--sometimes I think my sister-in-law only visits Lake City for those special fries. (And honestly, I don't blame her.) From frog legs to turkey gizzards, Mitchell is always cooking up something new, and it's clear this isn't just about food--it's about community, creativity, and making people smile. You can feel that heart in every plate. It's walking distance from just about everything in town, and it's one of those rare places where folks come for the food but stay for the feeling. Whether you're craving catfish by the pound or just want to enjoy a sandwich and sweet tea under the Carolina sky, Piggybacks is the real deal. So go ahead--stand in that line, try something new, and thank yourself later.

For the meats we had brisket, half rack of ribs, and a pulled pork sandwich. Everything was cooked to slow smoked perfection. Each plate came with two sides. We tried them all and rank them as follows: coleslaw, baked potato, green beans, baked beans, baked potato salad. For dessert we had a toffee cookie and the nana puddin. Their banana pudding was the perfect dessert to end the meal. Would definitely return to bring home a full tray of this delicious treat. I personally loved the layout of the venue. You enter and find a large open seating area, off to the right is the queue for ordering and a little trinket store. Behind the main dining room is what was possibly once a wrap around patio that is now enclosed with cute chairs for two table seating. Then behind the main building is a smaller room with a long bench table that was perfect for our larger family size. They also have an outdoor patio area that would be ideal in better weather conditions. The backyard has a pond and it was great to look out for birds and wildlife while dining. They even had binoculars at the tables along the back windows!

The Austrian and I went a little overboard, because apparently restraint has no place at a BBQ joint. We started with a smoked pork chop so enormous it was practically competing with his bubble head, then shared the BO JUNIOR--beef brisket, half a rack of ribs, pulled pork, beef sausage, and a pint of bacon-smoked beans. We also added the baked potato salad and smoked turkey because, well...we were already committed to the cause. Everything was smoky, tender, flavorful, and clearly prepared by someone who actually understands BBQ. And I have a pretty high bar when it comes to food. Then came Barbara's homemade banana pudding. Oh. My. God. Creamy homemade pudding, real bananas, and a beautiful meringue topping. This isn't the boxed pudding and Nilla Wafers I grew up with. This is banana pudding elevated to an art form. Quite honestly, it may be the best banana pudding I've ever tasted. And I have a little history with the pitmaster--I've known him as a supplier of blueberries and honey for my restaurant and as one of my best customers. So I already knew the man had good taste. Now I can officially confirm he knows how to cook. If you're anywhere near Lake City, put Slabs BBQ on your list. Come hungry. Very hungry.
