So grateful for Dr. Shuman and her team at Shuman Podiatry. I fell down the stairs yesterday morning and hurt my ankle. I was able to get an appointment that same day! Dr. Shuman even offered to work through her lunch to see me. As a new patient, you're often overwhelmed with paperwork. I was able to fill almost everything out on my phone through an online form on my way to the appointment. We took xrays and were able to immediately see the results. Joanna was fabulous. I had recently given birth and I was having horrific ingrown toenail issues from all the swelling and water retention. She did a quick fix for me on both feet and also made sure to address the pain I was having due to my high arches. She recommended several shoe companies for me to research and told me to come back if those don't work out for me. She is incredible personable and she doesn't waste your time, which is lovey. She was prompt, professional, personable and oh-so-informative and thorough. Her individualized attention is waaaay beyond the norm -- especially in Northern Virginia. Dr. Shuman is outstanding. Alone among podiatrists who have treated me in the past, she took time in our first meeting to ask questions, thoughtfully consider my answer (instead of interrupting me), ask more questions (instead of instantly diagnosing), manipulate my foot while probing for pain and watch me walk down the hall (instead of assuming that by then she knew all she needed to know), then offer her diagnosis and several possible solutions. The solutions were simple, less expensive and more available than ordering orthotics, and are working very well so far. Yesterday, I walked 2 miles without even thinking about my formerly aching foot! Dr Shuman is wonderful! She really explains the process of what is necessary to make my heel feel better. She gave me choices. I am not one for injections, so she took another route to help me. The front desk staff was also super friendly, efficient and on point. Very little wait, nice big clean waiting room. Dr. Shuman is what you wish all Doctors would be like, smiling, easy to talk to, doesn't waste your time and gets right to the problem and solution. On-site x-ray machine saves a lot of time. I almost feel it would be inappropriate to write a review for this doctor because she's almost like a friend. You walk into a doctor's office, and they have their diplomas and degrees on the wall as if they're so high and mighty. Then they come in with their white coat, and they make you call them doctor. Dr Shuman has the diplomas and degrees, and she has a white coat, but she asked me to call her "Joanna". She's very friendly and very humble. I'm fortunate to have never experienced major medical conditions, but I did have an ingrown toenail or two, and I've suffered from gout attacks. I've seen a few podiatrists in the area, and Dr. Shuman was without a doubt the most experienced. I had a gout attack one time, and another doctor just injected a steroid or something in various places in the foot hoping that some of it would get to the right place. Dr. Shuman injected the right amount precisely in the exact spot where it needed to go right into the joint. Same thing with an ingrown toenail. I had doctor inject anesthesia, and she kept coming back to check it. It had been over an hour when I finally pretended that I didn't feel anything. That doctor [sic] peeled off my toenail. It hurt like friggin' hell, but I pretended I couldn't feel anything. It's time management. Then one day I had an ingrown toenail, and I didn't want to waste two hours getting it taken care of. FInally it hurt so bad I went to see Dr. Shuman. She injected the anesthesia in the exact spot it needed to be. She came back five minutes later and did the procedure. I didn't feel a thing. I was in the door and out the door within 15 minutes. It had taken the other doctor over an hour. I don't know jack about podiatry. But I can tell that this doctor knows what she's doing. read more

A very personal, caring touch from a doctor who is clearly passionate about helping people. Dr. Shuman took the time to fully understand my situation and she quickly formulated a plan of action to get back to "pain free". In addition to the medical part of the appointment, Dr. Shuman provided me a one page guide in how to investigate the details of what my insurance would cover for me. Usually doctors avoid this topic and push the burden to the patient to figure out the complicated world of health insurance. Its just one example of many where Dr. Shuman works in partnership and cooperation with her patients. Outstanding. Professional and accommodating. It started with my call to make my appointment. Yelena was very polite and walked me through the online registration process. I explained my tight schedule and she worked around it. I get to the clean and professional office, sign in and take a seat. Not but 2 mins later my name is called. Dr. Shuman has great bedside manner. She was very professional and knowledgable about my situation. Walked me through why and how come this happens and how to retard the process, then fixed me up and sent me on my way within 15-20 mins tops. She had products for me to purchase there as well. Okay. Let me first say that I have never been treated so well and personally during a doctor's visit as being a new patient. From the moment I contacted the office to make a same appointment, to the time I entered the office, I felt like I had been there before. Dr. Shuman is awesome!!! The front office staff (sorry I did not get her name) got me into their system and ready in no time. The check-in was done online and she thanked me for doing my "homework" upon my arrival. There were only a couple more forms that required a signature and I was all set. Dr. Shuman is very informative and efficient in her work and you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire procedure. I've seen Dr. Shuman now for over almost 2 years and am very pleased. On my first appointment, she diagnosed plantar fasciitis in my right foot and plantar fasciitis/capsulitis in my left foot. She gave me inserts and modified one of the inserts for my left foot to assist the arch. The capsulitis was cured in only a week or two, but my right heel still hurt, so she gave me a steroid injection on two separate visits, and everything was great for almost 18 months. Then it came back, because at the age of 46 and logging 11k steps (or more) per day can take its toll on your feet. Dr. Shuman once again was her usual pleasant, informed, professional self and gave me another shot for both issues, and also a boot to wear at night. Things are improving, and every visit with Dr. Shuman is great. She's patient, kind, friendly, super-smart and knows her craft as well as anyone. I cannot recommend her more. read more

She is wonderful! I had an ingrown nail that I was trying to take care of by myself for about 2 weeks. It was inflamed, painful... I was scary to imagine someone touching it, but after some time I realized that I need some help. I saw 2 good reviews for Dr. Shuman, and now I know that they were true. We have been to several Podiatrists for my husband who has Parkinsons disease. They treated him but acted like they really could not be bothered.
