I could have added 100 more gorgeous photos than the many I already posted. The setting for the Ranch is very beautiful. You are surrounded by stunning National Forest. Trail rides take you to breath-taking views of vistas, mountains, through forests, flowering meadows, on and on. This is a great place to have a get-away alone because the staff actively socializes with the guests, everyone eats at group tables so you don't eat alone, you take trail rides, fishing trips, etc. with guides so you never feel lonely. If you want to be by yourself, you can take a walk or hike or hang out on your balcony. If you bring kids--they have "kid wranglers" who keep the little ones busy and supervised. Older kids can go on trail rides without you with watchful wranglers, there is even an overnight where younger kids have a "late over" up the mountain (then come back to their cabin to sleep), and teenagers have an overnight camping trip without parents. All meals are included, you only pay for alcohol. Trail rides are included. Many fishing trips can be arranged which are totally guided and all equipment is provided. I fly fished for my first time up a trail that was about a 30 minute drive and 45 minute hike up to a mountain lake where there was only one other person and it was stunning! Families and groups were there who go year after year. The staff is extremely warm and friendly. They work hard to make sure everyone has a good time and gets the vacation they want--be it family bonding, horseback riding, fishing, enjoying nature, etc. They had masseuses come in one day and I had a massage in the side room of the chapel. The chapel is so beautiful, this would be a mind-blowing wedding destination. I flew to a nearby airport and arranged to have the Ranch pick me up and drop me off, so I never needed a car. When we take the family, we will drive there and take a week to go through Yellowstone, etc. on the way home. Wyoming has a special place in my heart--and this trip helped cement it in there!

Lots of space which while there are gravel sections there aren't many rocks in the ground for tent sleepers! Petroglyphs are awesome to see and learn about, My favorite is the timeline. Volunteers are awesome and it's a lovely place. There is running water which is great to go to sleep listening to but also you can swim in it. The water is chilly but when you get in it feels so nice, especially on a hot day. You can swim in the shallow end or jump in and swim to the rock formation. Not many fish saw one small one and a toad years ago but lots of rocks, and sand but not much moss or algae. Lots of wildlife saw some deer on the way there, birds, gardener snake, raccoons (Hide your food & trash!), and of course bugs. Basically all the bugs bite, deer/horse flies, Mosquitos, Boxelder bugs, ants, and a few moths & butterflies. Had a great time would recommend & they do have a drinking water station but don't bathe, or do laundry it's the sanitary station to fill up water jugs. They've got fire pits with a grill you can add on top and wonderful wonderful views of the stars, We even saw some constellations. Got very busy on the weekend but I think it has to do with the time of year.

As you enter the park, part of the Wyoming State Park System, the bright red rock face, the destination, is visible for a short time as you make your way through the trees, past the campsites, and the walking trails. Originally part of a working cattle ranch, Medicine Lodge became a 12,000 acre wildlife management area of which this site is part. The archaeological portion is a relatively short walk along the sandstone rock face where the Native American petroglyphs and pictographs are etched. Of course, there are also periodic and far less interesting distractions of the modern day taggers who can't help themselves. While there are interpretative markers drawing attention to the most notable glyphs and graphs every few feet, it can take a bit of time to discern them on the rock face -- especially when the afternoon sun is at the wrong angle. It's a truly fascinating glimpse into what archaeologists have dated back thousands of years. The markings are simplistic, much as you might see from a child, but once you understand the story each is telling, it becomes an extraordinary site. The introductory section displayed a visual representation of certain events back ten thousand years to give viewers a sense of time. The site is free for day use if wanting to see the petroglyphs is the main draw for you , but there are also overnight campsites, both reserved and first-come first-served, for those wanting to enjoy the peaceful outdoors, maybe fish, catch a glimpse of the wildlife, and camp in the western foothills of the Bighorns. There's also a horse corral for those intrepid explorers who prefer to travel and explore with their larger four-footed companion.

We caught fish - most of which were large. The food was excellent. On trips like these I have often subsisted on Doritos, peanuts, and other questionable ultra processed "food". This time each dinner included a huge salad, meat, a starch - pasta, rice, etc. and a vegetable plus desert. Excellent and we didn't go away hungry. My favorite meal is breakfast and you get a wide choice of options including my favorite bacon and eggs. Lunches were provided on our floats of the Bighorn and were very good with more food than I could eat. Dave and Cary and their two labs were great hosts. I highly recommend

If you're looking for the ultimate in "all-inclusive" guided fly fishing on one of North America's…read morepremiere blue ribbon rivers, Bighorn Angler Fly Shop and Lodge is the one to go with. Have I tried the rest? Well, no. But from what I've heard from fellow fishermen and local guides, you can't do better at this pricepoint than Bighorn Angler. I booked a 3-day guided fly fishing trip on the Bighorn river with some friends, and had the time of my life. Located in the tiniest of towns (St. Xavier), you'll be surrounded by southern Montana's high desert beauty, with farmland, rolling hills, and tons of wildlife. During my brief 4-day stay, I saw hawks, bald eagles, coyotes, mule deer, turkeys, pheasant, and even a black bear! The lodge itself is quaint, with individual rooms with two queen-sized beds each. They're comfortable and clean, and apportioned with all the standard hotel accommodations, while still keeping with that rustic Montana lodge feel. Yes, they even have WiFi! Coffee is ready at 7:00 each morning (there's Keurigs in the rooms), breakfast is served at 7:30, and the guides show up at 8:00. A word on the meals: there's no menu. It's like eating at mom's. You'll be served what they're cooking that day, it's always good, and you won't go hungry. I'm sure they accommodate food allergies and other preferences, but I don't know for a fact. The guides are all locals with years of experience. They're friendly, informative, helpful with just about any request you have, and all equipment is provided, from waders to rods and line, all the way down to terminal gear. You just need to dress the part. A word on attire: you'll need to do your research on the weather expected for your visit. Montana is somewhat unpredictable. Case in point, day 1 was cold, calm, and overcast; day 2 was a bit warmer, but rained ceaselessly all day; day 3 was sunny, much warmer, and a bit breezy. Having the right layers to be able to adjust to changing conditions is a must. As far as the fishing experience, I couldn't have been more pleased. The Bighorn is a tailwater fishery, so the water flow is regulated. It currently boasts 3,000 fish per mile. And the quality of fish is darned good. I brought almost 30 fish to hand during the trip, and the AVERAGE was 18", with many in our group catching some in the 22-25" range. Browns and rainbows. You may also catch a whitefish or two, and we saw one of those around 20" as well. And although the prices may vary based on time of year, trip organizer, etc., our three-day excursion cost us $1800 (not including guide tips, which can vary from $75-150 per day, depending). If you're looking for a fishing adventure that you'll remember for a lifetime, check out Bighorn Angler Fly Shop and Lodge. Tell Dwayne I sent you!
