About a month ago, I took my son to the ER, where he was admitted to the Behavioral Health Unit. The ER nurses and physician were professional, patient, and genuinely empathetic. We did have to wait a bit to see the doctor, but once he arrived, the admission process moved quickly and smoothly. I live in Northern Virginia but chose Sibley Memorial Hospital because of its strong reputation, especially compared to other hospitals I've visited in my area. During his stay, the Behavioral Health Unit staff consistently showed real care and concern for their patients. I visited my son every day and was always greeted warmly. The nurses were kind and attentive, and I often heard positive feedback about my son's behavior, which meant a lot to me. His psychiatrist at Sibley, Dr. Peters, also stood out. He took the time to listen to my concerns and even reached out to my son's private psychiatrist to better understand his situation--something no other hospital psychiatrist has done for us before. I visited a friend a few times and I was floored by the attitude of the kitchen staff. Borderline rude on the phone, and very, very slow. They would forget orders. If you call one hour after placing an order they will still be unable to give you any information. Will take them over an hour to put the simplest meals together... When you consider the fortune that Sibley's charges, it is really mind-boggling. read more

I want to start by saying: if you're an employee here, do NOT bring your family here. Based on my experience, my family member was transferred here for better care, only to be sent back to the same place where they had originally been transferred from. It felt like no one was willing to step in or advocate for them. I found the staff to be unsympathetic, and I left feeling like they truly didn't care about helping us. This experience completely changed my opinion of this facility. I would not recommend it to anyone, especially employees considering bringing their loved ones here. I hope they take a hard look at how they treat patients and their families because no one should have to go through an experience like this. read more

As a fun fact, I had all three of my children at Sibley Memorial Hospital. But, that was a long time ago. On Monday, I went to Sibley Memorial Hospital for a medical test. It is a huge hospital and they have done a great job on modernizing the hospital and adding new buildings to increase the hospital size. First, let me say that trying to get in the right parking lot area was a challenge. One entrance was closed and that left the other parking area extremely crowded. The staff and people who work there are angels. I ended up in the wrong area of the hospital for my test, so the nurse at the desk actually took me to the right area. That was so nice. That was so kind and above and beyond her job description. I did wait for about 30 minutes, but once I got in, the test was completed in a timely manner and I could go home. The technician who completed the test was very nice and professional. Parking was a bit expensive, but I think all hospital parking lots are. I would recommend Sibley Memorial Hospital to anyone who needs medical care. They are a John's Hopkins Hospital and their doctors and nurses are excellent. read more

A very nice facility overall with a reputable surgical team on staff. The ICU nurses were all fabulous but over worked. The medsurge floors had nice spacious rooms. The med surge nurses were also overworked and almost missed critical map of 40s with my family member who was not due for VS check for another three hours. The rapid response team was swift to act and took things more seriously. Overall, good care from the whole team overall. read more

I was having very frequent contractions at 30 weeks pregnant and Sibley Labor and Delivery team immediately jumped into action. Nurses Jordan, Ella, and Carla ensured I was comfortable, monitored and heard. Dr. Cannon was so joyful and listened to every feeling I had and payed very close attention to my pain. All of these ladies helped to calm me down, give me the medication I needed to stop contractions and preterm labor, and I feel so cared for and listened to especially as a black woman. Thank you L/D. On 3.23.25 we brought our active duty military son into the ER after an Urgent Care center said that he needed to go to the ER with symptoms of possible food poisoning (vomiting, diarrhea, chills, stomach/headache, light headedness). We checked in around 1:00, and he was released approximately 10 1/2 hours later. It took almost 6 hours to see a doctor. In the meantime, he was in excruciating pain and dehydrated with chills. He was not allowed to drink/eat due to potential needed tests, but they kept asking for urine samples. I get that, but what a great opportunity to at least get an IV going for fluids. His blood pressure was low and his heart rate was high. It took another 4 1/2 hours to take blood, a COVID test and a stomach CT scan to confirm gastritis, most likely due to food poisoning. No one could even give us a rough estimate of when he might get some relief/see a doctor until the doctor actually came in. When he finally got into a room in the ER area, many hours in, they did not even offer him a pillow or blanket. The Urgent Care center luckily sent him with a blanket. I had to hunt down the nurse for a warm blanket to help with his shaking. The staff in the ER area with the actual rooms, wouldn't even make eye contact. I understand the ERs are tough places to work, and they have to deal with a lot of stressed out people; but other than the lady sitting at the admission desk when we first got there and the nurse my son eventually got, the staff seemed checked out. The second lady at the admission desk was extremely short with people and sarcastic. The doctor that eventually saw my son was nice and had a decent bedside manner. She answered my questions patiently and seemed to be caring. I do not take this lightly, given what just happened to Brett Gardner's son. I know ERs triage cases, and it gets crazy. A little compassion and communication goes a long way. We are grateful that he eventually received help, but the customer care left a lot to be desired. read more

Sibley needs to outsource their ER to a group that can effectively manage and perform care. From the admissions group to the ER care, Sibley is a very poor experience. Ask for another ER if you possible can--Sibley is not a good destination. read more

This is a review for Medical Oncology at Sibley Hospital. I was diagnosed with CRC in early 2020. After my surgery at Holy Cross, I struggled to find a place for chemotherapy. Due to the pandemic, hospitals were going into emergency mode and not taking on new patients. I was terrified because the only option I had for chemo was an outpatient chain of infusion centers where the medical director laughed at the idea of Covid being a global pandemic (March 2020), and where all the patients sat in the same infusion room in a compromised immune system nightmare. Somehow I managed to get in touch with a Medical Oncology scheduling assistant at Sibley, and she got me under the care of Dr Michael Pishvaian. I'm so thankful she did. The entire team at Sibley Medical Oncology is AWESOME. They're very nice people, they really care about their patients. The private infusion rooms are great. The level of care is exceptional. Any time I had a medical emergency, I called the oncology hotline and the nurse on call told me what to do. Once, I had to go to the ER and they got me in a room with positive air pressure immediately. This was the height of Covid, some of the staff was in Hazmat, everyone was wearing PPE. I was very impressed with the diligence and infection control at the hospital. I always felt very safe there. I completed chemo, never got Covid, never had a reoccurrence, and am done with that scary phase of my life. In addition to Medical Oncology and the Emergency Room, I've had many scans done at both the impatient and outpatient imaging centers. The staff everywhere in the hospital that I've encountered has been great. I've also used their Surgery Center to place and remove a chemo port, and again the care was excellent. read more

Anesthesiologist Karl Grimmer (still at Sibley) and OB Matthew Peterson (now practicing at Kaiser Permanente Townpark Comprehensive Medical Center in Kennesaw, Georgia) subjected me to an abusive and traumatic c-section in 2018. My cries for help were ignored, I was told it couldn't be as bad as I was desribing. Told Karl I was in pain. He responded, "Well, you shouldn't be." I became so terrified that I was screaming for them to either put me under or kill me. Matthew flippantly told me that they "couldn't give me anything" because it would hurt the baby. I learned during my second pregnancy and deliver that that was patently false. When I described my experience to my new (all woman) team, they were shocked and horrified that I was allowed to suffer the way that I did. I have PTSD and will never be the same. I wish both of these men nothing but the absolute worst, and I hope my coming out with this story leads to others sharing theirs and them facing some kind of consequences. read more

My experience at Sibley is only as a visitor of friends who are patients. Near the D.C.-Maryland border, the campus is easy to access with a large parking lot with paid spots. (We paid $9 on a Saturday for two hours.) The buildings are clearly marked and after checking in at security, we took the elevator to see our friend. I was scheduled for surgery. I was sent an electronic insurance/payment form to fill out. I completed it and sent it back. The week before surgery, I arrived for a pre-operative interview, only to be told that I hadn't filled out the form. I said I had, but they asked me to fill the form out again. I was like, whatever, so I did it again. On the day of surgery, I was in the hospital, getting ready for the procedure when I was told I hadn't supplied my insurance/payment info. I'd already filled out the form TWICE. I informed them of that and they said they didn't have it. So I filled it out a THIRD time. Day of the procedure! After the surgery I was in excrutiating pain and was moaning. The nurse assigned to check in on me had just one comment: "Jesus Christ." Didn't offer to get me something for pain or make me more comfortable. Never again. NEVER EVER. EVER. read more

Sibley Hospital is the absolute best! I was in the biofeedback program for my Levator ani, and Beverly was the specialist. Beverly was fantastic and so good at her job. I was seeing her for 6 months and started to feel better. Unfortunately, it was in 2020, and the program got shut down due to mass Covid patients. I still do the stretches she gave me, which still helps me. Thank you Beverly! Recently, I had to get a procedure done under local anesthesia, and all went very well. The check in went quick, and I was seen within 15 minutes of arrival. The nurses were so kind and supportive, I felt cared for and safe. My Dr, anesthesiologist, and nurses all helped my experience be a positive one. The whole process went smoothly. I'm grateful and thankful to all that helped me. read more

Considering that people who are ill are calling to schedule appointments, Sibley should be ashamed of it's phone service and Johns Hopkins should be ashamed to call Sibley a fellow hospital. read more

I'd like to add that I had a TIA in May 2024 where I had to have an MRI which showed ischemic changes in my brain that was "old". Interesting, since I haven't had treatment for my blood pressure or adequate pain control for severe headache at this ER visit, I wonder if it's connected with my new MRI diagnosis. read more

I had a very bad experience that until now I am traumatized. In fact, I gave birth at Sibley Hospital on 07/10/2025 with many complications because initially I wanted to give birth vaginally, my delivery was induced from 07/08 to 07/10 until 9 p.m. and contractions were induced for 2 days but labor did not progress and I ended up having a cesarean section around 10 p.m. on 07/10/25. Only God knows the pain I suffered during this whole process. After the cesarean I was released on 07/14/25 and I returned urgently by ambulance to the hospital on 07/15 because I had severe pain in my stomach, I was vomiting, I had a high temperature. Following these symptoms several tests were done and I was re-operated on again because the doctors made me understand that I had contracted an infection, my intestines were stuck and the tissue that keeps the organs was open in one place inside. I was hospitalized for 2 weeks 1 day and I was released again. I was on antibiotics during this entire period and after my discharge from the hospital I was still put on antibiotics for 10 days. I was no longer breastfeeding my child and my milk production was only decreasing because even being in the hospital I was still pumping the milk but I threw it away after. 3 weeks after my second operation the pain started again accompanied by vomiting, on 02/09 I went to the emergency room they did the CT scan and they made me understand that everything was normal but I continued to have stomach pain and I was still vomiting. On 06/09 I was again rushed to the hospital by an ambulance because the pain was becoming excruciating and I was still vomiting. 4 hours later the doctor made me understand that I had to have an emergency operation because the CT scan showed that my small intestine was blocked. After this news, my morale was at its lowest. I was completely panicked, wondering how I ended up having to undergo 3 operations in less than 2 months and my fear was that I wouldn't leave this operating room alive. The doctor tried to reassure me as best he could, but I was so scared. I thought about my daughter because because of all these operations I wasn't able to enjoy her as I should have. I was operated on for the third time that day. And this is my very first child but I had a very bad experience that until now I am shocked and I do not wish it on anyone because I almost lost my life. I had no problems during the monitoring of my pregnancy but after the cesarean, the nightmare began. And the treatment is expensive, despite everything I've been through, which is due to the fact that my first surgery went wrong, because it's because of that, that I had two other surgeries. In less than two months, I've had a total of three surgeries, having a baby who's barely two months old. You can't imagine the pain I'm going through. I went there yesterday for a serious issue. I arrived at 11:30 in the morning and did not get to see a doctor until 9:15 at night. After I had bloodwork I was booted back to the waiting room along with everyone else, I never even had an emergency room to lie down in until 915 pM There was a woman with a serious head injury who did not get a CAT scan for several hours, maybe even up to four hours. Terrible triage system. No one ever did a physical check on my body, they just did a CT scan but didn't ask any questions about my situation, and gave me medicine that has made my situation worse I have heard that Sibley is now owned by a venture capitalist group. This is the worst emergency room, and no one there seems to even care. I will never got my We will always go elsewhere after this experience. I was harmed badly by a gynecologist at Sibley Hospital. I tried to get help and no one at the hospital wanted to hear me. I asked for help from the Chief of Nursing because there was a nurse in the room when the doctor hurt me and also from Patient Advocate. No one is interested in holding the doctor who harmed my pudendal nerve to account. I had my first child at Sibley in 1965 when it was a lovely hospital. I had always thought this was a good hospital. Unfortunately, my daughter went there for a mental health crisis...don't go here. She asked to be discharged. 36 hours later. I was told she was being admitted and then told she was being reevaluated again...if someone is saying they want to die why aren't they being helped. Also she wasn't given any of her prescribed meds, staff rarely checked to see if she was okay, begging for water, the list goes on. I am so disappointed in the care given here. read more

The waiting room was full of sleeping people--there so long they could no longer stay awake--held hostage by Sibley ER's incompetency and total lack of concern. The place was ridiculously overstaffed with special police, and dramatically understaffed by medical personnel. We would have gotten better care and more attention at an urgent care. It is weird to be rating a hospital, especially as I sit here waiting to for my mother in law to come out of surgery. Still, I have had more than my share of health issues that date back to my early childhood (first operation at 6 years old). As a result I have experienced many, if not most, of the hospitals in and around DC through the emergency room visits, in-patient stays, and out-patient procedures. Let's just say I am surprised they don't have my name on a wing somewhere with everything I have spent at hospitals (I should also give a shout out to the insurance companies that helped me along the way). All this is to say that without any questions or hesitation, I recommend Sibley hospitals as the best in the area. The staff is helpful, organized and just plain nice. When you are in a vulnerable place and in need of a hospital, this is critical. I have also found that the best doctors that I try to use for my various conditions are affiliated with Sibley. So, although I truly hope that no one will ever need to visit a hospital, I just want everyone to know that if you find yourself in the need, this is the place. read more

I had the worst experience at Sibley ER. I arrived at 4:30 this evening at 11pm I have not been seen by anyone. They just keep telling patients there is no room in the back. I am experiencing kidney disease I have an infection tons of bacteria in my urine and I still wasn't seen. So yes I left the ER so I guess I need to be in full kidney failure to be seen at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine. If my kidney function gets worse I'm blaming Sibley and their poor service. They do not care about the patients my lab work shows that I have a kidney disease but during those 5 hour no one bothered to look at my test result. Do not go to Sibley Hospital. read more

Truly all the nurses were great but they received a special shoutout for making me and my family so comfortable during a nerve wrecking process. Absolutely LOVE this hospital. As a native Washingtonian, I have visited almost every hospital in DC at some point in time for a family member. Nothing compares to the service and are you will receive here at Sibley. I personally have had surgery here and received excellent care in 2013. I recently visited because my mom had surgery on 11/21/2019 and had to spend the night. Her assigned room in Building B 744 was super nice; almost like being at the Ritz Carlton for sick people lol. The private rooms are beautiful. I love how attentive the staff is to the patient and the staff. This a great hospital for women's health and oncology. Everything that lists '19 minute wait time' or 'short wait' in the ER is a bold face lie. My very sick daughter is in her 7th hour of waiting to be seen. Sick, exhausted, crying....she's worse than when she arrived. They ran labs within 30 minutes of arrival and then just left her. Be honest with people when they arrive. Provide the care you preach. Don't allow patients to leave sicker than they arrived. read more

Went to urgent care for a swollen testicle and was told I might have testicular torsion. It took them 45 minutes before they performed my ultra sound and an additional 2 hours for the radiologist to confirm that their was still blood flow. If I did in fact have torsion, I would have most definitely lost the testicle due to the amount of time I was made to wait before being seen. Absolutely horrible service and very lazy radiologist. read more

ER IS AWFUL - don't ever come here if you have sensory issues or special needs PSYCH unit nurses are literally abusive. I've been to worse places but If I had any better option to chose I wouldn't come here for PSYCH. I heard dominion or inova are better Sibley also removed my gallbladder during another stay which wasn't the cause of my pain and has made my life much worse as a result. I recommend Virgina hopsital center and or taking a lot of time with loved ones to evaluate options if you come here. Also the social worker is incredible at the psych unit. They don't have much enriching activities here and the communication between the nurses and doctors is ATROCIOUS. Be expected to be fed whatever meds the doctor has on their list and not much therapy. Semi good for stabilization but mostly in terms of being drowned with meds. The OT therapist was cool but she didn't deliver on anything she promised and I would highly recommend staying away from the nurses named virgina & michael and there was one other masculine human that I really hope to never have to see again. Keep to yourself if you have to go here in terms of interacting with staff -- know you have the right to switch staff if you feel abused or mistreated here or at any other facility. They would blast really traumatic shows on the tv btw like Fox News and shootings? WHO DOES THAT. The best part of this whole place was the social worker(s) and the dessert. I loved Dr ifey but the shift change between doctors and comms between them was exhausting. read more

Exceptional experience!!! Sibley Memorial is now part of the Hopkins Healthcare Network. An important procedure was scheduled for this past Friday. COVID protocols were still in effect so I had to drive home. The nurses were extremely friendly and helpful and the attending physician took excellent care of my wife. They even saw a clear opportunity to perform a complementary procedure since general anesthesia and NPD was already in play. We certainly appreciate physicians that take comprehensive histories and make informed decisions based on that information. The doctor knew that the host of other conditions my wife had made this an excellent opportunity to perform a secondary exploratory procedure. In the procedure room, my wife reported an extremely well organized team of six working in concert. It all lent to the most important outcome - quality care and a positive patient experience. Should we have need of ongoing visits to the hospital, Sibley will certainly be at the top of the list going forward. Healthcare well my friends. read more

The staff is rude. The African American receptionist was trying her self to apologize but the triage team was just NASTY! I was injured in Iraq and was not made to suffer as long as I am being made to wait. This is why veterans are so ready to end it all with a bullet to the head. No body cares. Shame on the ER . After 5 hours of waiting with chest pains I was sent home despite my BP being 177/110. Doctor to nurse: "No worries his chest pains are lessened so it's probably because he's been here for 5 hours." HUH? Oh the chest pains I was told that I should have driven into VA because Sibley doesn't "do cardiac stuff!" DOUBLE HUH? I'm sending a letter of complaint to the folks that evaluate hospitals nationwide...if they receive enough the hospital will loose their preferred status. The pre-op staff is efficient and caring. The nursing staff, once admitted were hard to understand, no where to be found when needed and surly. I waited an hour and 45 minutes for any assistance the day after a large surgery. I had to stand in the middle of the floor yelling HELP in order to get anyone's attention. Took my wife to Sibley with blood clots in her lungs. Arrived at about 2 pm. Was seen immediately and told to wait for a bed. About 6:00 pm was taken to an ER bed. Doc came and ordered blood thinner from the hospital pharmacy. It's 7:48 pm and still waiting. In the meantime, received a text from CVS that the script for Elequist is ready. Maybe we should just leave and go to CVS. read more
