Picture it: New Orleans. End of June. Probably around 90-something degrees and dense humidity, even though it's the evening. After seeing a show in the Quarter I had the BRILLIANT idea to actually "go out" somewhere down there. Meanwhile I'm in heels. So dumb. Where am I going with this? Well, here it is. I was walking in the heels and the heat and the humidity when I decided I needed AC and ASAP. The cool air was flowing out of this place and we immediately went in, not even knowing what it was. Well, it turns out that it is a really cool place that sells a TON of beer and wine. They had beer that I didn't even know was sold down here! I was impressed. Although I personally didn't buy anything, they are getting five stars because of what my friend did and how they handled it. Well, he had a huge bottle of beer ($14) that he was going to buy when gravity fought back and he dropped it. Bottle smashed, beer e'rrywhere, some got on my shoe. It was a mess. The guy working there immediately rushed over, cleaned it up and when my friend insisted on paying for the broken bottle (as well as a new one) he was told not to worry about it. He just charged my friend for the unbroken bottle, told us to tell people about the place and sent us on our way. He was so nice. You know as many drunk people as that guy sees in a night, he could have been SUPER ornery about the whole thing but he wasn't. So five stars it is. And I will be back. read more

This liquor store was a great little find while we were walking along Decatur St. It's a very tidy spot filled with a wonderful selection of Craft Beers, Wine and Spirits. This just in: you can openly drink in public in New Orleans. If this wasn't the very reason you chose to visit, take a moment to appreciate it now and walk over to Sidney's Wine Cellar. I myself had some serious reservations; in a place where open drinking is not only tolerated by seemingly encouraged, one would expect businesses catering to that caliber of clientele to be somewhat seedy. Not so. I walked in to a well stocked store with a delightful variety of beers and wines from two-buck-chuck to imported Scottish Lagers. When my female companion and I were searching for the right kind of beer on a hot day we were helped out by Hugh (at least that's what the name on the card said) who talked us through the right drink to try for the river walk we were about to take. They even gave us plastic cups (glass is not legal) to drink our beverages with. It's was a pretty impressive operation. read more

This is always my go to spot when Im on Decatur, or Im about to wait in line for dinner at Coops. The selection is vast, the prices are cheap (respectively) and the service is always friendly and attentive. I normally stock up on a couple of Restoration Ales and then walk the quarter. It's far more cost effective to grab a couple of beers here before venturing out to the bars. I wish there were more spots like this in NYC. read more

Sidney's is a beautiful little hole in the wall on Decataur (though on Decatuar you could toss around "hole in the wall" like so much confetti, but I digress). After trying absinthe for the first time at the Old Absinthe House, I decided to take a bottle home. Not only did Sidney's have a great selection of absinthe (about 8 different varieties, if I recall), but the staff was extremely helpful. The woman behind the counter told me which brands she had in her home bar, and eventually helped me settle on Lucid (which was one of the cheaper bottles) as a good bottle for an absinthe neophyte. If you're not looking for absinthe, fear not. They also have pretty much anything else you could want, including a nice selection of locally made/locally themed alcohol (like sazerac rye whiskey, praline-pecan liqueur, and Absolut New Orleans vodka). And if you're too thirsty to wait, they have a nice selection of cold, single bottle beers and malt drinks (and a sign that makes sure you know that, yes, you can drink on the street in New Orleans). I have lived here for 6 years went there to buy cigarettes and coffee then stopped when I was getting over charged for things I knew the prices of It is hard to even walk in the door of the place because it's turned into a hang out for the homeless I had 4 people ask me for money in 20 feet of the place then I get in they doubled the prices on everything and cigarettes I walk up to the counter and the 2 guys looked like they have not taking a bath in months I bought the cigs was so upset how dirty the place was I WILL NEVER GO BACK read more

Can't complain too much about Sidney's. Pretty wide selection of beer by the bottle, a few inexpensive wines, and of course liquor. Insider tip: go for the $6.99 spanish red (cheaper than yellowtail, way better), or the $5.99 walnut creek white. Both are great value. Oh, and did someone say $10 for a liter of Evan?? Yes, I did. A great place to grab a beer. Get a to go cup and wander off down the street with something good. Don't be the dumbass who spends $8 for a crappy beer on Bourbon Street when you can spend $2-3 for a craft beer. Great prices and the guys are quick and know their merch. I told them as I walked in the door that I wanted a chilled Riesling with a screw-off top. Next thing I knew it was in my hands and I was out the door. They even had go cups so I didn't have to drink it from the bottle. Classy! I thought it was weird that they locked the door behind me, but apparently I wandered in as they were closing. So get there before 11pm! read more

If you need a beer and a Hubig's for Quarter walking, stop in to Sidney's. They are my lifeline for cheap beer to enjoy while cruising in the Quarter. They'll open your beer and sell ya a cup for 10 cents. On a nice sunny day, grab a muffaletta (or any sandwich), stop in here to get a beer, some chips, and a Hubig's pie and walk over to Jackson Square to enjoy the weather and the fact that you can drink in a park. They also have a nice liquor/wine selection if you're staying close by and want to enjoy a bottle later. read more

I love Sidneys! I go here daily & sometimes 2-3 times in a day (I live in the hood). The first day I moved into my place, the guy at the counter welcomed me to the neighborhood, gave me the store hours, & said he hoped to see me in the future. Be careful what you ask for, right? I have a crazy Boston Terrier, who I bring in there often. The people who work there love him! He even got a little too excited at one point & peed on the door, to which they laughed & got paper towels & cleaned it up. I was embarrassed, but felt better with their reaction. I now pick my pooch up when going in there to avoid such scenes. These are good people. I will continue to support this local store. They have what you need in a pinch, whether it's liquor, beer, wine, soda, zingers, or eggs. read more

Every time I go to Sidney's its special. I love the dueling cash registers. The staff is always friendly and quick. For a fun time pick a brand of cigarettes that is at one counter and not the other and watch them toss the pack across the entry way like beads at a mardi gras parade. read more

This place is my go to spot in the French Quarter. One of the best parts of NOLA is getting to walk around with your choice of alcoholic beverage. As a local, I would say this is the spot in the Quarter to get your "walking beer." Don't be that guy who pays eight bucks for a Miller Lite at some tourist trap bar when you could get a solid local or craft beer for only a couple bucks! We stopped in here probably ten times over the course of our vacation while strolling around. Save some money on the bars and stop by Sidney's first. Everything from premium mead--which despite my affection for all things that sound like they're from Westeros, tastes like cooking Sherry, but that's besides the point--to Newcastle in a sexy black can (which I shotgunned outside, because that's the kind of classy, graceful person I am). Prices are a little bit over the place, some stuff I know you can get for cheaper at Rouses and some stuff I know is more expensive anywhere else in the quarter. However, you don't come here for things you can get at Rouses or Rite-Aid. You come here for six packs of craft beers, weird liquors and a whole aisle full of heady snacks. read more

In addition to a great selection of wine and beer they also have a fair amount of every day items and a small grocery. They are where I checked first for anything when I lived nearby, and was shocked at how often they had what I needed from head ache medication to lighter fluid to condiments or ice cream. read more
