Sierra Grande is the perfect definition of a hole in the wall. From the outside it's modest and humble -- part restaurant, part gas station, part gift shop -- but inside it's pure soul food. You can literally fuel up your stomach, your tank, and grab a little gift for the road. The menu has a bit of everything: burgers, burritos, enchiladas, carne asada, even breakfast. True to New Mexico style, almost everything can be smothered in red or green chile (and you absolutely should not skip it). Hands down, one of the best green chiles I've ever had in my life was here. I came in for a quick bite while passing through, hoping for a smothered burger (sadly they weren't making one that morning), but I went with Dino's Breakfast instead -- bacon and extra green chile on top. Total flavor bomb. Soul-pleasing doesn't even begin to describe it. When I walked in, the place was quiet. By the time I left, it was filling up with guests, and it's easy to see why. Sierra Grande is not to be underestimated, and it's now officially on my "must visit" list every time I come through. read more

We stopped here with mechanical Issues with our RV. A gentleman (turns out it was the owners son) stopped to help who had mechanical skills and helped charge our filters. Awesome dude!!! I got a ham egg and cheese sandwich which was equally awesome and bought a few novelty items from gift shop!! A must stop along your travels! Be safe read more

Good roadside diner breakfast. Lots of choices. The entire menu has lots of local flavors. Service was excellent. Quaint diner atmosphere. Touristy items for sale, including local artist's works. We enjoyed our early morning meal very much. Highly recommend this place. read more

Looks like someplace to pass right by, but the food is really good! It was a bit warm (no AC I think), and definitely nothing fancy, but conveniently located if you're passing through. Hubs had a green chili burger, which was solid, fries were the coated kind, not my fave, but not terrible either. Kid had a grilled cheese and fries, no complaints. I had the stuffed sopaipilla and it was delicious. Also got a side order of sopaipillas for us all to share, they were really good. Light and pillowy, with some honey on the side. Delish! Would definitely stop in again if I ever find myself hungry in these parts. read more

We drove across the country and experienced weather that looked and felt like a tornado was about to happen. We stopped here for a break. It was such a great stop. Waitress was nice - food was fast. And well.. we just needed the calm environment to handle getting back on the road. I didn't eat because too freaked out from weather so I can't comment on food taste but it looked good! read more

Ahh everything was 5 star worthy! We stopped here on our way home for Colorado and it was beyond what we expected! From the kindest servers to hand drawn art on the wall and delicious food! I had chicken fajitas and my boyfriend had the Mexican bacon burger. He said it was the best burger he'd ever had and my fajitas were pretty amazing too! Great place to stop and enjoy:) read more

SKIP IT. DO NOT STOP HERE. TERRIBLE SERVICE. Starve yourself and fill up on gas somewhere else BUT this place. I've never felt the end to ever bash a business like this, but this place was so RUDE to someone else that it left a bad taste in my mouth. Just hearing it made me disgusted. This place has both a gas station and a restaurant. However, we stopped to get some gas and make a restroom break. Before walking through the door there was a sign stating "restrooms for paying customers." Believe me, I understand. But the way they treated the next customers after us was disgusting. They were so rude to the customers who had 3 kids who just wanted to PEE. A human right if we're being honest here. The women spoke no English, and the lady kept asking her if she had paid before using the restroom. I get it, it's only for paying customers. BUT COME ON, your gas station and restaurant is in the middle of nowhere, where did you expect these kids to pee???? Eventually her English speaking husband came and helped the situation. They also had a SMALL DOG with them, and the employee was already furious that they used her restroom and she proceeded to rudely tell the man to get out with his dog in the rain. LIKE WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? WHO HURT YOU? Why are you so rude????? We will never stop by here ever again. What a find on the road back home. One of the few restaurants that actually has indoor seating. The food was awesome and the portions ample. We split the Ranch Hand breakfast with an extra side of biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were fluffy, soft, and incredible. Definitely a must stop when traveling to and from Trinidad. read more

We stopped here on a road trip to Colorado in August 2023. There is no sign outside to let you know this is the Sierra Grande. We passed it, got to town, and turned around. The food was OK but not polished. I had the Carne Asada (steak) which came with rice, pinto beans, guaramole, and a tortilla. The steak was very tough in spite of having been pounded very flat. It was less than 1/4" thick overall. The seasoning was minimal and not highly flavored. The beans and rice were acceptable. The tortilla was OK. The guacamole was good and made correctly. My companion had the 2 beef patties covered with cheese and green chile sauce and that was probably the better pick. We had the pecan pie for desert. It was acceptable, but only had pecans on the top and not all the way through. Given the high price of pecans, I was not surprised. The prices here were reasonable, considering this place is out in the middle of nowhere. The service was OK. read more

I stopped in this restaurant while traveling across New Mexico. It's a combination gas station/diner/gift store. I bought some gas and then sat for a second breakfast and a short driving break. But my waitress left abruptly after she got a phone call, and the cook came out to substitute. At first she asked me to wait for the waitress to return to get my check! When I indicated I was in a hurry, she reluctantly prepared the bill. The place was clean, the food (one egg and two sausage patties and a small orange juice made from concentrate was a bit over $6) was average. Restrooms are only for paying customers. read more

We stopped in on our way from Texas to Colorado. We needed diesel but the pump wouldn't allow us more than $75. We then headed into the diner hoping for breakfast and friendly service. Inside we found a single waitress and one patron eating breakfast. The unfriendly waitress made zero eye contact and offered no greeting to us. We asked if we could get breakfast and were informed it ended 15 minutes ago. We chose to leave. I'm glad they are so confident in today's economy that customers, reviews and income are expendable. I tried this roadside cafe on a suggestion from someone who had eaten here on numerous occasions. I ordered the double decker club and it an ample sandwich stacked with all the goodies. The prices are fair and the service was good. The flies in this place really are ridiculous, 6 or 7 just hanging out on my booth. The meal might be good but some on that many flies just at my booth ? We walked in and immediately they said they couldn't serve us, but then the lady came back and said to seat ourselves. ALL of the tables had dirty plates and we had to move them ourselves. The lady handed us a rag to wipe down the tables. We asked for silverware and it was never brought, actually anything we asked for was never brought. The food was almost edible. Food was not good I order 5 plates of carne asada the rice was smooch with no flavor, beans had no flavors either, and the meat it literally just out of the bag and thrown in the grill no flavor and also when they give it to you is raw. The service was not great either, she threw the straws at us, and was not sympathetic with us. read more

Stopped here on my 14 hour drive after reading promising reviews. We ordered a bowl of green chili and a chicken quesadilla. The chili was the worst I have ever tasted. I took one bite and couldn't eat more. It tasted like pure fat. There was no trace of green chili's and the pork pieces were mostly fat themselves. The chicken in the quesadilla was rubbery and tasted as if it had been frozen and heated multiple times. Very disappointing after reading all the good reviews. read more

We tried this place based on some good reviews. We were duped. The FLIES are a real problem. Lots of them. But no worries, they hung a bar of soap over the door so, problem solved! We ordered a mixed bag: breakfast for one, burger for one, and Mexican for the rest. The breakfast was fine- not fine dining, but fine. Burger was okay. Mexican was hmmm- not traditional New Mexican food. The enchiladas were rolled, not baked, (which is fine and they clearly said rolled) and the tortillas were fresh out of the bag and not heated. The red sauce tasted like spiced up Hormel chili. Not necessarily bad because sometimes you want Hormel chili! The green sauce less traditional but okay as well. The service was less than you would expect at 2pm, not what I would call the lunch rush. Alma was so-so attentive. We got our food in a reasonable time but never were checked on again for drinks. We didn't get all the dessert sopapillas that came with our meal and we had to ask and remind our server about the ones we did get. But there was a bright spot. The sopapillas we DID get were hot and good! Warm with honey on them helped the rest of our meal have a better impression. Summed up- if you are really hungry stop and fill your belly since your standards are lower. If you are looking for a "hidden gem" as one reviewer on TripAdvisor said, keep looking.
