Housed in a well-kept building on the corner of Hamilton (a block from Sun) and topped with an appropriately eye catching custom sign, Utzig Signs has been in business since 1975. It is currently run by the super nice (and almost menacingly large) Mike Utzig and his holy-crap-he-looks-exactly-like-how-his-dad-probably-looked-20-years-ago son. Seriously, it was like the Dolph Lundgren-body double version of Dr Evil and his mini-me. I went through Utzig to have a sign made for our community garden and the entire experience was great. I sent them a form email via their website, requesting some information on pricing and other details, which was promptly replied to with a phone call from the owner. He was very nice and helpful over the phone, explaining several options, and I was able to get his email address and send him the sign via the 'net - it was completed soon after, despite me saying "no hurry," and I received a courtesy email telling me it was ready. Easy-peezy. After my own courtesy call to apologize for MY delay, Mike took no issue - my bizarre work schedule and busy pre-work community group schedule conspired to hold off my pick up a week. The sign looks great - it was just some clip art and font I threw together in Microsoft Word and virtual printed as a pdf but there was no distortion in color or pixelation on a 24x20" sign. A mere $25 for a fade-reistant vinyl coated, metal core sign (a similar sign purchased by my community group predecessors has lasted several years in our garden and looks new still). I was especailly impressed with the turn around when I went to pick it up and saw how busy they are - they had neatly organized finished jobs around the space and customers coming in and out regularly. The owner and his son were equally nice in person as Mike had been on the phone. A great, local business that managed to be big-store professional with downhome customer service. Awesome.

Jill does a great job of helping us find the garments we want in colors we like. This sometimes involves a little bit of wrangling, but she always come through with options that work for us. They are not necessarily the absolute least expensive or the absolute fastest - but they provide reliable and high quality work for reasonable prices in a clear and consistent timeframe, with the option to expedite turnaround if needed. The guys said "Come back Thursday at 9am and we'll get right on it." I showed up at 9am pulled in their garage and they immediately went to work. It actually took the team about 50 minutes to do the job, which by the way was better than I expected once completed. They cashed me out and said "We're shaving a bit off because it took a little less time." Who does that? Only a small business with a big heart who cares about their customers... That's who.
