A few weeks ago I really enjoyed an article about the different ways to commute to work as I'm considering my options with the current gas prices. Then this past week there was a whole Fringe Festival edition of the paper. They always have interesting staff questions of the week and really make a point to have the staff be really visible to the readers. It's a great alternative paper to City Beat and the Enquirer. It picks up where they left off nicely. Also the crossword puzzle is always fun yet a challenge!

I find this magazine quite interested as to how it relates to my job. I work in development in the arts so putting names to faces for the Cincinnati arts VIP's is good for me to do. I do, however, wonder what use it gives to the average Cincinnatian as it is quite chock filled of just pictures of people. It is really interesting to see all that goes on in our community when it comes to arts and community service organizations. I saw pictures of benefits for organizations that I didn't know existed but now I do. There were even pictures of the gala at my organization which was before I started working but I thought was pretty neato! So pick up a copy and explore!

All of their advertisements are for local businesses in the greater Cincinnati area. I notice a good deal of jewelry store and boutique advertisements. The magazine often has special themes aimed at the city and city issues. Last December there was a great issue that listed the "Best of the City". The best ice cream, piercings, food, jewelry, active life, and much more! It's a great magazine to have to find out about places you've never heard of before. I've found out about several restaurants that I ended up really enjoying.

It's really my guilty pleasure. I'm pretty happy with some of the recent format changes to the paper. Now, the newspaper is divided into two main sections: news and life/entertainment. I use the term "news" loosely, because we're not talking hard hitting journalism here. Pretty much just informative articles about county government happenings and other local civic activities. The "Life" section of the paper is filled with human interest puff pieces, but when you know the people who are featured the stories become more engaging. I wouldn't really recommend this paper to someone who was from out of town, since so much of the content is directed toward residents. If you like to go to garage sales (which is another of my voyeuristic guilty pleasures), the Recorder contains the listings for all Community Press newspapers in Greater Cincinnati. Overall, the Recorder isn't going to win any Pulitzer prizes but it's the number one choice for keeping tabs on your neighbors.

It has some interesting feature articles from time to time, but not the overall appeal of Cin Weekly or City Beat. A smaller paper, it has at least two business, art, sports, lifestyle, gossip and opinion columns or stories in each issue. The photography is really good, I think. The paper also has events pages and I like the short Q&A of a downtown employee or resident. I think recently they changed it up to feature a male and female each issue.

Recently my mower decided to not pull start anymore. Not cool, mower! After calling the 800 number…read morein the owner's manual, I finally got to talk to a human that said this place was the "authorized" place for warranty repairs. So I set off whilst the April rain poured down, I loaded up the mower in my trunk, hoping that my trunk (and mower) would not get soaked. I arrived and lugged the very heavy mower out and into the shop. I talked with a nice guy that told me that mowers are made for bad weather so worrying about it getting wet was not necessary. Oh well, I learned something handy. What I did forget to do was close my trunk so after having a 5 minute convo with the guy, I came back to a soaking wet trunk. Good thing I had nothing else in the trunk. The only negative I can throw at this place is there is often a 1-2 week backlog for repairs. This time of year is just not the best time to have a mower go bad. That being said, the mower was finally repaired and was still under warranty so everything was free. I had them sharpen the blade too which was $12.

I've tried to do business with them and have never been successful. They declined a brass repair of mine at one of their instrument repair locations which is now closed, but was very unprofessional about it. Last week my 13 year old and I spent several days choosing a new trigger trombone for him stepping up from his entry level trombone. We ended up choosing one on the Willis Music website with his middle school band instructor's approval and placed the order with Willis online late one evening. This was one within our budget and checked all of our boxes plus it was new...we thought we were going to need to take our chances on a used model. Credit card was charged. I woke up the next morning to my son still super excited asking when it would arrive, and that he had already been awake two hours watching videos and reading about it. I was really excited for him. Later that morning I received an email that the order had been canceled and a refund would be issued with no alternatives offered. They said it had been discontinued, but the manufacturer still makes this model just with a new backpack style case which is the one they displayed in their listing. They ended offering to get us that same trombone we had purchased (because it wasn't discontinued), but it would be $600 more than I had paid on their website the night before. They also assured me this $600 additional was a great deal. Such a scam and a waste of time. They certainly don't attempt to make things right in any way...unreal let down for my son. I wouldn't trust them and especially their website/online ordering. This also had our budget tied up in the authorization on my card for a week. We ordered a used trigger trombone on eBay, and will be taking it to Mehas Music to have it checked out, cleaned and any repairs.
