Free art exhibits, live music, delicious food and drinks... this is definitely my kind of event!…read moreVarious musicians performing at participating venues during specific times throughout the day, it was enjoyable entertainment. First I stopped by Whole Foods, cuz ya know, I could fit in a little bit of grocery shopping in between songs. Lots of outdoor seating around, and David Jesitus (duo) performing for passersby. Then, off to Visual Philosophy Studio, where I got to check out the opening reception for Encode-I art exhibit by Yue Xin, and met the artist while listening to the sounds of Asher Stern (unique covers of songs like Santeria and No Diggity). Afterward, Hop & Vine made the most sense since it was just a few minutes walk away. Had some really great wine and snacks here, specifically the house made jalapeno poppers were delicious. Peter Martin wowed the cozy-sized crowd with his electric guitar and vocals, playing a range of songs, including instrumentals for hits like Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud. He played till 7pm, an hour later than the listed time for Second Saturday on The Alameda. Many of these artists did a lot of folksy music and renditions of songs, and I was loving it. My final stop for the night was J. Lohr Vineyards, the only one with live music later in the evening on this day, two hours of duets and harmony by the Complements... so many covers on the keyboard, guitar, and vocals including How Deep is Your Love, Don't Wanna Miss a Thing, Hotel California, Your Song, Can't Help Falling in Love, Take On Me, and I Wanna Dance With Somebody. I was able to experience so much in just a few hours. Even without stops at the tattoo parlor, coffee shop, or pancake house (other spots that had live music on this Second Saturday as listed on the schedule), I was more than satisfied with my visit to this event. A great opportunity to explore and support local businesses along the Alameda while appreciating the work of various artists and entertainers at no cost, with bonus freebies offered by specific venues as well. I'll definitely be back.

"Hidden gem" is a hackneyed phrase that I generally avoid, but it is quite apt for this fine little…read moremuseum just a short distance from Santa Cruz Avenue. We stumbled across this museum while searching for new opportunities through our local library's Discover and Go program. If you aren't familiar with this program, you are advised to check it out because it provides free or reduced admission at many places around the Bay Area. Anyways, three of the four of us were able to score free entry, and the fourth got in at a reduced student rate. Regular admission is $10 as of this writing. There was ample parking in the lot on this Saturday afternoon. The person at the front desk was super friendly and chatted with us about the current exhibitions. There was a fascinating exhibition of the multimedia works of Jody Alexander, who took the cloth bindings of old books and incorporated them into new works of art, sometimes with the Library of Congress call numbers still intact. Also on display were the art of Thomas Campbell (including delightfully chaotic installation piece) and the photographs of r.r. jones of the people he met on his travels. It was well-curated with excellent and easy-to-read descriptions. The basement of the museum focused on the history of Los Gatos and the surrounding area. There are various relics of the town and the area's past, and the story of Mountain Charley and the plight of the Muwekma Ohlone tribe. All in all this was a wonderfully engaging museum and well worth a visit. Incredible little hidden gem tucked away by the library…read more Parking is accessible. Entrance is a little hard to access. The front is by the water fountain opposite the town hall. You can enter also through the LG library bookstore. Exhibits are colorful, thoughtfully curated, and interesting. Lots of things to see and learn. Kid tables with crafts, too. The Sistine Chapel Exhibition in San Jose was decent at best. I feel the location of the exhibit…read morewas poorly chosen for a multitude of reasons... (limited parking and overall set-up just to name a few)... and not to mention that for the price of two adult tickets, a whopping $74? It was HIGHWAY ROBBERY! The advertising for this exhibit promised awe and wonder and what we got was anything but. First and foremost, I gifted this experience to my mother because she has always wanted to see Michelangelo's work in Italy and I thought this would be "the next best thing." Much to both of our dismay, it was FAR from it. Secondly, you are REQUIRED to download an app in order to interact with or get information for the pieces in the exhibition. You then use that app to scan QR codes throughout the exhibit that have been paired with each 17 foot rendition of the Sistine's panels.....but please be advised, the audio for this is not only cheesy... but borderline CRINGE. Not to mention, that although you are expected to bring your own headphones for this audio tour .... If you don't, THEY DON'T CARE. Let me explain....they tell you upon checking-in to download the app and use your headphones but in the same breath, if you don't have any.... that you can play it out loud too if you'd like.... Now, imagine being in the MIDDLE of your own audio for a piece and someone walks up, scans the QR code and begins blaring the same audio again from the beginning ...and you can no longer concentrate on what you are hearing because you hear THEIR audio as well. It was a horrid set-up. This happened no less than three times throughout the self-guided tour. There are very few places to sit for those who have trouble walking.... there are no bathrooms anywhere in the vicinity of this exhibition and there is no clearly defined path to explain where to go, which led to a lot of folks milling about, clumsily crossing over one another to scan the darn QR codes and with a 50 / 50 chance that the individual in question had no headphones.... you will end up disappointed in the experience as a whole. You are honestly better off going to a real museum or saving your money for a trip to Italy. HARD PASS suggested to anyone debating coming to this exhibition....

The event is in one big auditorium with large fabric printed and back lit pictures in the arrangement of the original chapel. They upsell with audio tour device and drinks, which I don't mind, but it can get pricey relative to listed price. Also museums have a lot more for less, so they're not really competitive. However, they will be packed up quick since this is for a limited time only (high pressure marketing, again!) All and all, maybe going proves I'm an old soul as I was younger by many, many decades than everyone else... In other words, the vibe I got was that Tom Selleck was going to sell me a reverse mortgage as I was exiting through the gift shop...

Located in the "industrial" section of Campbell in what I would call Los Gatos…read more We've used them for some vintage posters. A good frame is everything, and your frame should reflect the art piece. In our case an original Corset Le Furet 1933 and Cendrillon 1899 posters found wonderful frames. It isn't cheap, and it takes several weeks, but the quality is amazing. If you have a masterpiece of art you prize, don't leave it to Michael's framing, go ahead and get the best. Young is the owner and his team at Artscapes are professionals. Most of the local museums use them. Got a sneak peek at a collection that was getting ready for display at the Triton. Amazing work!

I went in last week with five pieces that I wanted in one frame. I spoke with Randal, who was one…read moreof the nicest and helpful gentleman I've met recently. After showing Randal my pieces, I quickly knew it was not worth the cost to have them custom framed. Knowing he was not going to make a dime from me, Randal still took the time to offer me multiple suggestions and even made notes for me knowing I had no clue. I ended up doing the job myself and have to admit, it came out better than I hoped. I'm sure those in the know would know right away it was done by an amateur (at best), but I'm quite happy with it. It's nice to find someone in business that truly cares about the people that come in their door and isn't just trying to make a buck off them. If I have another piece worthy, I will definitely be back to have it framed here.
