Vibrant Art Community In Heart Of Downtown San Jose SITREP Local Color is an incredible creative movement making Artist Spaces in Downtown San Jose from allowing the use of dormant buildings & spaces. THE SETUP As it turns out, I'm catching them in their SECOND installation (newer location) as "Local Color 2.0" here in what once was a Ross/Kohl's building I think(?), right on S. 1st Street. Our awesome host Mary Ann filled us in on all the details about the mission & high concept for Local Color. [Mary Ann was also headed to the Depeche Mode concert that we were on our way to see at SAP Arena as well!] https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/local-color-san-jose?select=dNXOdWPFDBAphuJ77i1oPg "LOCAL COLOR" CONCEPT In collaboration with San Jose municipal management, Local Color 2.0 state that they "reactivate" out-of-use or inactive buildings so that they can be transformed into art space incubators where local community artists can create an environment to collect people, spaces, things and ideas that will flourish the art community. A few ways this is accomplished is by setting up creative workshops for community members, setting up shared studio spaces for artists, and encouraging pop-up bazaars to promote the works of the local art community. They have plenty of space in which to do this: https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/local-color-san-jose?select=Rl14zNB1q1tSR7gmpxOTxA PILOT PROJECT Essentially, Local Color 2.0 has temporarily been given the green light - through funding by the Knight Foundation - to reimagine empty out-of-use buildings in Downtown San Jose, and repurpose them into art-hubs for artists. Here in Sacramento, we have a similar community movement via Art Hotel and Art Street. So our Sacramento community understands very well the excitement in being able to take over dormant structures and streets to make into small and large creative spaces. A tangible outcome of these art-movements is to generate economic opportunities for artists and promote civic stewardship in, as here at Local Color 2.0 in San Jose, and in our Art Hotel & Art Street in Downtown Sacramento. Local Color 2.0 THE SPACE The space itself is quite large (considering it once was a department store). It plays hosts to many events & festivals. The perimeter around the walls also serves as the artists stalls and within them many artists are busily at work with their creations, including: * From innovative new takes on traditional styles https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/local-color-san-jose?select=LaJFefFOZY4CQ5RQzqv8zg&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w * Creative diagrams of the human body https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/local-color-san-jose?select=d7XeRvn-IklA6uXylupfNQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w * Cool Graffiti https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/local-color-san-jose?select=ZRwtWJ-7PpgBPLIiY4ESrQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w * To 3-D objects and structures https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/local-color-san-jose?select=4QebrSjxz2S0sJvdApQ4VA&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w GOOD FOR KIDS? Definitely! Open the little ones' minds and inspire them to all the creative passions that they can summon forth from within themselves! THE LOWDOWN If in San Jose, find time to drop by and see how the space is evolving. It's wonderful to engage with the artists directly and to see their beautiful works as they are being created.

Shoes off...time to reflect and rest!

What an awesome art space! Stumbled upon the bazaar and found a bunch of artist spaces (most seem to be there on weekdays). I came on a weekend but there were a number of vendors: flea market style. So cool! There were vintage clothes, handmade jewelry, antique jewelry, unique trinkets for sale, interactive art installments, a place to reserve time to record your story, a resting place with yoga mats and comfy chairs, art pieces all around, a mimosa bar, and an all-around awesome vibe! What a great space! Not sure if this is only a temporary location, or a permanent space, but I hope it is here to stay! I could see this place really booming in popularity. The art scene is making its prominence known even greater here in San Jose, and I think this is the perfect venue to capture that growth and support our local artists! Check it out!

Downtown

The 5 stars is for the customer service with the dude behind the front desk. Sometimes he is doing…read morehis paintings outside, but he is still happy to stop to help visitors inside. Like a duck in water, he is in-tune with the surroundings. And the business activates with him when he is there. This also occurs with another dude who works at The City Fish, the ladies who work at the Jack in the Box, the guys at The PoorHouse Bistro, and the guys at Devine Wine and Cheese. They are all good at what they do. The place is not like a Museum in Paris where million dollar paintings hang for the rich and famous. It is not like a factory warehouse or classroom for mass producing for sale in Cost-Plus or Ross. This is a place like where ordinary people could be standing outside their living room with an eager smile saying "Hey, wanna come check out my art?"

Today on 6/30/26 I was taken advantage of by Fernando who works in the front. He stole a print from…read moreme and claimed I didn't bring it with me. That was the first print on top of my stack. Do not trust these people they are thieves. I will never show my work here or be represented by them ever in the future. The curators are dishonest and Cherri the curator didn't check to see if he had stolen it. They said there were no cameras at the facility to see if my print of Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix was taken by him. The most important thing about this is that if he wanted the print so bad all he had to do is ask me for it and I would have given it signed and dated. Don't socialize or have anything to do with Kaleid Gallery they are untrustworthy.
