Such a fun thing to do in St. Joseph. I love how they have the carousel, which pays homage to the amusement park that once stood in the same location. Although it is not the original carousel which is now located in Washington state, it has classic carved wooden horses and is contructed via traditonal methods. This isn't your modern fiberglass carousel, it's as close of a reproduction to historic carousels as it gets. The horses (and other animals) are beautifully detailed and many have fun Michigan themes (my personal favorite is the MSU one). There's also not one, but two classic band organs whcih I absolutely love. We recently visited for a family trip. It was my son's first carousel ride and he had a blast, looking at the lights, colors, and motion...even if it was just from the bench since he's still a little guy. It was a memory I'll remember forever. read more

Just a delightful experience in St Joe situated next to the beach and train station. You can make reservations/purchase tickets online in advance then check in during your timeslot. The customer experience was very smooth. Upon arriving, we checked in by providing the name on our reservation and party size. The welcoming employees provided us with wristbands and we entered the main carousel area. It was massive! There was a concession stand with super reasonably priced snacks and beverages, benches to provide seating for adults, and of course, a gift shop. The upkeep was GREAT too. They must've recently renovated or performed maintenance because the carousel looked fresh! Fantastic music too. The ride was smooth and featured a variety of animals to sit on--not just horses--including pandas. Enjoy that breeze, sights, and sounds as you ride. One of the best parts? Your ticket includes unlimited rides for the whole hour. Seriously awesome and fun. read more

This was a wonderful spot near a park, beach, and pretty good pizza place. Love the wizard of Oz theme and had great desserts for the kids at affordable prices. Check out the the splash pad afterwards for sure! Did I mention free parking in the summer. read more

A really beautiful carousel with 2 fun features - the tokens are all stamped with a different animal from the carousel AND you can purchase a passport in the gift shop to keep track of all of the figures that you've ridden. So cool! The architecture of the building is also amazing - it looks like enormous popsicle sticks all the way up. The only detractor was one religious panel on the top of the carousel, which felt out of place for such a public space. read more

A fun place for children and adults alike. The carousel animals are adorable, the treats available are basic but good and the gift shop is the cutest. I enjoy coming here with my best friend and nephew, who loves riding the carousel and never wants to leave. My favorite animal on the carousel has the be the giraffe. The staff is fun and attentive, I really like the announcer guy for the carousel, Larry. He is very nice and has been working here for a decent amount of time. I will definitely be back. read more

My friends and I came to the area for a bachelorette party and discovered the carousel when we were exploring. It was such a fun surprise! I don't care if I'm 35 years old, we all loved riding the carousel. The whole building was so nostalgic and fun. Totally worth stopping in if you have kids or even just adults. They have a concessions stand that sells popcorn and cotton candy so that just added to the general atmosphere and nostalgia. Very cool! read more

We had our wedding reception at the Shadowland Ballroom and rented the carousel for one hour during the event. It was FANTASTIC! The staff is great to work with and were excellent communicators leading up to the event. We had 150 guests (all older than 21) and the carousel was a hit. We did our rental from 8:00-9:00pm, so right after we finished dinner at 6:45, we did the first dance, mother / son, father / daughter dances, and went straight out to the carousel to do our professional photos before opening it up to guests. I liked that timeline because guests could get a drink or two in them first before enjoying the ride. Photos on the carousel did take longer than I expected, so the full hour was pretty necessary. If you're debating whether or not to book the carousel for your event, I recommend you go ahead and do so. It's super fun! And as a bonus they give you 60 free ride tokens at the end. Talk about charming! St. Joseph truly is the Riviera of the Midwest. Old fashioned town full of quaint shops and restaurants, but the gem is the hand carved carousel set inside a fabulous building brimming with artifacts from long ago carnivals. Look outside and see a super clean white sand beach, and a long pier where you can walk out to a beautiful lighthouse, and just an all around fabulous place to be. As much as we enjoyed it all, we couldn't have without all the volunteers who treat everyone like a special guest. The loveliest of all is BARB RADEWALD who so patiently explained everything we shouldn't miss. She grew up here and in my opinion should be named Ambassador of St. Joseph. She's amazing! read more

They changed how they do it and now require you to book a one hour reservation. They will steal your money if someone can not attend the day of. How it went: we were there for the full hour, we got to a ride it a total of two times. And wait in line for the other 50 mins. They sell too many tickets, it is completely packed to where there is no walking room, they say face masks are required, but not one employee was wearing a mask and about 85% of the customers did not have masks on. This new system they set up is terrible and highly suggest you and your family do not waste your time on it. It was not enjoyable in the least. read more

A must! Purchase a token and ride a carousel. All of the workers are so kind that it is a great experience. There are also a few train displays set up and for a quarter or a token (use a quarter, way cheaper than a token!) you can watch the display and learn the history of Silver Beach. As this carousel is placed between the beach and most of the public parking, it serves as an excellent bargaining tool to get the kids away from the beach and closer to the car. It's a very nice, clean indoor carousel. Well maintained and worth visiting. Rocking chairs line the outer perimeter of the carousel so it's also a good place for the parents to sit for a few minutes. Would I go back? Absolutely. Kids loved it. read more

St. Joseph in general is a beautiful city. It is full of great restaurants, and many mom and pop shops. The carousel itself is history that's still present. This place is so cool. Not only is the carousel full of the most beautiful and unique animals (did a praying mantis really just go by?), but seeing the historical photos and artifacts from the full amusement park that was here back in the day is fascinating. My recent visit here was made especially interesting because I was with my mom. She attended her prom in the original Shadowland Ballroom. I'm so jealous. I can picture in my mind what a site it must have been when the park was running in the 30's and 40's . took the grand kids to see and ride the new carousel the week it opened and have been back several times in the last 5 months . Awesome! So nostalgic and amazing. But they DEFINITELY need to get rid of the Laughing Sal and the creepy clown that slides around and comes towards you. I jumped so hard my daughter screamed. It is supposed to be friendly, not scary....it reminds me of "It." But in other news, so cute how the carousel characters sometimes change out. Fun for the family. read more

Our favorite thing to do at St. Joe (except for the beach, of course!) the workers here were all so wonderfully sweet and you could tell they really love being there! The carousel was a great value, the music that played during the ride was awesome, and the treats available were yummy and affordable too! This place is a little diamond in the rough! The Silver Beach Carousel was so much fun and the staff was so friendly. My daughter's birthday is in the middle of winter so trying to find new, fun things to do in the cold can be difficult, but this was a perfect day out for our family. It was affordable, and I really enjoyed that it was educational and fun. The animals of the carousel were just beautiful. An attraction that is largely run by volunteers, the Silver Beach Carousel is a lovely throwback to the heyday of the Silver Beach boardwalk. I thoroughly enjoyed my ride on a hand-painted horse during the Christmas in July event. With board games, corn hole, and other attractions available, this is a fantastic reminder of both childhood and better days gone by. read more
