    That thar's a gator
    Kevin J.

I liked this state park enough to buy a handsome t-shirt in the gift shop. The shirt doesn't say Florida on it anywhere which is pretty funny to me and actually makes me like it more. The waters here are absolutely lovely but even on a weekday in late December they were pretty heavily traveled. It might not be fair but the place being clogged with so many of my fellow pesky humans is the only thing that keeps me from putting SSSP in the vaunted five star category. I kayaked the river and saw birds and a gator. Bout time I saw a Florida gator in the wild! Only took five visits. I also got right over a manatee. I thought they were a big rock til they started moving. I could have clubbed em with my oar if I wanted to though it seems like that would be not just cruel but stupid, too. At any rate, no wonder they're endangered. Poor sluggish, dumb creatures. There were quite a lot of other kayakers and canoeers on the water. The guy dressed like Santa was pretty hilarious but for most of the trip I was denied the splendid isolation I longed for. Needless to say, the glass bottom boat tour didn't appeal to me, even with the clear view down. Beautiful scenery, though. Checking in and out was quick and painless even if the separate entrance briefly threw me for a loop. Afterwards I hiked a shorter trail and it was pretty mid, nothing special. For a while it ran too close to a road which kind of ruins the whole thing for me. And there was the aforementioned gift shop, chock full of wares. There was another t-shirt I liked a lot and had trouble choosing between the two, always a good problem to have. It's the end of the review here and I probably should have said this at the beginning but the entrance sign is just lovely, very classy and retro. I can see why this is a local icon but as an out of state visitor I don't know if this place has the staying power for many repeat visits for the locals. I was glad I came here once though. Funny to think this park is what Stevie Nicks wanted Lindsey Buckingham to be. Jk.

We visit silver springs state park often because it's a close state park that lets you bring your dog( not on glass boat rides), they have open fields for picnics, walking trails, glass bottom boat rides and kayaking options. They have been upgrading the park with food and drink options. They now serve alcohol! We got a drink at spring side cafe. I had a vodka cranberry. The bartender was friendly and fast. My drink was $13.00 for a double. We went for the 30 minute glass bottom boat ride I have been a few times and this time was definitely better than most. Why? Because the captain of the boat was not only informative but hilarious and had a great personality. CAPTAIN REEF! He is definitely worth requesting if that's even an option! I can't wait for our next visit!

Saturday August 12th, we walked around Silver Springs State Park and took kids on Glass Bottom Boat Ride in the Lagoon of Silver Springs. We saw Turtles and lots of fish while learning the history of the park & area. It was absolutely beautiful day! No swimming in this Crystal Clear water because Alligators dominate this water. The boat ride was very nice. We had reservations on the 9:45am boat. They also enjoyed having their Paw Paw Lee with them. There is a lot of history here Including it was once owned by CBS and several movies including Creature from the Black Lagoon and series Seahunt with Lloyd Bridges. We didn't get to see Monkeys or Alligators..Definitely going back!

We rented one of the cabins for a weekend. They are super cute and have 2 bedrooms, a gas fireplace, grill and fire pit. The reservation process and check in were easy. Reservations are available online 11 months in advance and go fast. The cabin loop was very quiet. We went to the other side of the park and enjoyed the glass bottom boat ride, I highly recommend. The captain was very informative and funny. I would return to the park during warmer months to do some hiking and kayaking

An incredible tour for those who enjoy and appreciate nature, Ocala has several options but this traditional place has already been the setting for some famous films, we loved the experience we had here in 2023.

In 1878, Hullam Jones invented the glass bottom boat for Silver Springs providing a unique and spectacular view if one the larger natural springs in Florida. After WW ll, Silver Springs was one of the most visited attractions in Florida, particularly with the glass bottom boat ride. It's off the main path of Florida today and is a quiet, slow paced wonderful experience. Manatees often frequent the springs and of course loads of fresh water fish. Overnight camping is available, and the Stare is updating the restrooms and snack areas in 2023. Open year-round from 8 am to Sundown, fall and winter are perfect times to visit. Check out website: Floridastateparks.org for entrance fees and camping options.

    Goofing off before the tour.

Apparently this used to be the biggest tourist spot in Florida. Before Disneyland took over. If you love nature, and I do!, this is the spot for you. On the day of my visit it was very busy with kayaks but the tour boats have priority on the river. Basically it was one giant spring! Alligators, turtles, and manatees. Loads of birds and fish too. If you have your own kayak they have launching fees and places for that. Next time I'd love to rent a glass bottom kayak as it allows you access to certain areas not accessible by boat. Definitely must visit more than once place!! Wear sunscreen and a hat. Happy yelping.

Love this park for the bike & hiking trails, Kayaking and glass bottom boat rides. Visit the very nice museum of some local history & a little cracker village of some old homestead homes.

I was at peace just walking a bit sipping coffee and taking in the calm and beauty. There is much to see at Shalom Park it's very beautiful place to be. When I was there they were having a yoga class it was so nice to see. I walked around and spoke to some lovely people they mostly were enjoying some morning exercise. I'm sorry that I missed the zen garden but this just gives me an excuse to go back faster. It's obvious that many frequent this park for so many reasons you can easily see. It's lovely, peaceful, clean and you feel pretty safe comparatively. They have activities here from what I've read and the yoga class is proof of this but I think there is much more that I need to explore and check the calendar for to see and know for myself. There are 2 miles of trails, the zen garden, an area called the Labryrinth where you can take a physical, spiritual or meditative walk along its winding path. Stop along it's 24 points of reflection and create your own Labryinth experience. Labryinth's have one way in and one way out come in and form your own perspective enjoying this relaxed atmosphere. The Pergebo was magnificent as I felt so much happiness being there. It is part gazebo and part pergola, I didn't even know such a thing existed until now! It's covered in confederate jasmine and blossoms in the spring with tiny white fragrant flowers. This is located on the path at the end of the olive trees! I enjoyed the pond so much with all the beautiful fish and sounds of the falling water. You can feed the fish and see them all come at once jumping out at you. Gorgeous Koi such beautiful colors. Sit on a bench and relax if you'd like there are many all around the park for you to enjoy. They say the pavilion is often used for educational purposes and horticulture events and that there are often presentations that people can escape the sun or rain showers. The stage is where I had seen the yoga class taking place. They have weddings, live concerts, the parks sunset series and much more on the stage throughout the year. Mounted on the stage, The Peace Panels display quotes of peace by renowned authors, musicians, and political leaders! The olive tree promenade has 18 trees on each side 18 is the symbol of peace; the number 18 is the symbol of life, and many couples use this as their entry way for marriage. The formal gardens is an area where there is lot's of live large oak trees, colorful bushes and lot's of foliage all around in a nice quiet shaded atmosphere. People often gather here for a picnic, wedding or just to enjoy and relax and enjoy the environment. The bat house can hold 800 bats during the night. Bats are a natural way of achieving insect control in the park and each bat can consume 6-8,000 insect every night! There is so much more to see and encounter at Shalom Park I encourage you to visit and explore. The story of Shalom Park from their website: As with most great achievements, Sholom Park began as a vision, born in the hearts of Sidney and Ina Colen. Inspired by a visit to Boston Gardens, Sholom Park was created for a purpose; to provide a place where the pursuit of inner peace and learning may be enhanced and enjoyed. The park was named after Sidney Colen's grandfather, Sholom, which is also the Hebrew word for peace. The park does not serve a political or religious agenda or belief system After years of conceptualizing the vision, a master plan for the park was developed in 1999 and the park concepts began to take shape. In 2001, horticulturist, Steve Curl was hired to oversee the final design and construction of Sholom Park as the vision came to life. On October 17, 2004, Sholom Park celebrated its grand opening and ribbon cutting along with hundreds of friends and supporters. In fact, there is no playground equipment at all. What it does offer, though, is everything one could want in a natural setting. You can walk for a little while or lose yourself in it for much longer. The paths are easy, accessible, and thoughtfully laid out, with enough variation to keep things interesting from start to finish. It never feels repetitive, which is rare. The labyrinth was genuinely enjoyable, with multiple points of interest throughout. Subtle shifts in sound and visual texture keep you engaged, yet everything remains grounded in simple nature, shaped by the hands of men.. nothing artificial or forced, just an intentional design that draws you in. The crowning glory moment for me was the Zen garden. I cannot remember the last time I felt that level of calm and stillness. It has a way of centering you almost immediately. I would have stayed longer, but I needed a restroom, which unfortunately was closed at the time. This is a place I will return to without hesitation. My mother has yet to see it, and I already know she is going to love it.

At this trailhead, there is PLENTY of parking (when you pull in go to the right - it goes around a corner and there is where you'll see a couple of parking lots). There are bathrooms, a water fountain, and trail map here at the trailhead. You can choose a couple different trails - going to the right is a 3.5 mile hike (one way - so there and back is 7 total) that goes over to the 49th ave trailhead or to the left goes to Santos (7 mile one way). We went with Santos. Things were pretty clearly marked; however we somehow ended up on the bike trail at some point (there were 4 of us and we were busy in conversation so ya know, it happens lol), but was easy enough to make our way back so our 7 miles turned in to about 8-8.5. Worked out great because we ended up coming out where Santos Bike Shop is and took a Lyft/Uber back to our car at the trailhead. The bike shop was great, super nice people, plenty of knowledge in there. The trail itself is shaded for the most part, sun creeps in, but it's definitely shaded with all the trees. We saw a LOT of cool looking trees. I'm a big fan of being able to explore Florida (free is even better) so it's nice to be able to go out on the trails without having to pay to get in to parks or for parking or what not. If you have bikes, this is a GREAT trail to come to - the trails are separate as far as bike friendly and people hiking friendly which is nice for both parties. We really enjoyed and can't wait to visit again.
