Van camped on Silver Strand State Beach during a hurricane.. and boy was it a wild ride. This small beach sits on a peninsula in San Diego. It's so far down the coast you can actually spot the lights of Tijuana on your way in. While the trip didn't last long (the weather wasn't very kind) this campsite was impressive. They have access to clean water, bathrooms, and a direct view of the ocean. I really couldn't ask for more. Important to note: The road to the campsite is shut down around 8pm for security reasons. Once the entry to the road is locked, it's around a mile walk to the site itself. This was walk pretty miserable in pouring rain, so I wouldn't suggest Ubering to bars at night. Otherwise, I'd highly recommend this white sandy beach and site for anyone looking for a quick/easy getaway. read more

Well I'll start by saying I was unaware of the sewage issue before coming and I'm a little in shock there are signs posted to warn people when making reservations. Thankfully , we don't swim in the ocean so we are marked safe from the doo-doo . Pricing for beach front was $85 water and electric , no sewage (go figure). You're literally on the beach so we loved that with the view . Staff here needs work.. we were surprised by how rude and dismissive she was. When we arrived she said were too early ( we were THREE minutes early ). I said isn't it almost time ? She snapped at me with "ya well there nobody here to check you in so either wait in line or go park over there" and then walked away . So if you're coming here , just know you'll have to wait in line until the EXACT time. I've been camping since I was a baby and I've never experienced such strict regulations . Other than that , spaces are small so I wouldn't recommend a large trailer . But it was great for three days ! read more

This is a beautiful place to relax, exercise, camping or simply have a nice chill walk. The ocean's water quality might not always be great, but the place is safe (lifeguards on duty and park rangers always on site), beautiful, plenty of parking, and right next to a little bay area where you can kayak, play volleyball, have a barbeque and even a little hiking trail. I love my evening walks on the paved path on the east side of the road and finish by the beach to enjoy the always beautiful sunset. read more

Nice campground you have electric hook up and water hook up, but there's no sewer. However they have a dump station you can dump on the way out, but you have to pay. This is a first campground I've ever had to pay when you stayed there and a daily fee. The good news is there's a guy that comes around with the white truck about 9 o'clock every day for 20 bucks. He'll pump your holding tanks which is $10 more than on-site dump station fee of $10 but it's a lot less hassle. A big bummer about the beach is there's bacteria, hazard signs, warning users not to go on the beach because of the sewage coming out of Mexico so it's a nice place to go, but it's not my favorite read more

We visited here the day before the Fourth of July on a late afternoon, and you can see from my pics the solitude that had. The cool beach air and open spacing made us feel like we had a private beach. We enjoyed our slow paced, leisurely stroll along the low surf. There are public restrooms and rinsing stations by the parking lot, and on your way out. The solitude maybe partly due to the occasional beach closure due to pollution, so check before you start your trip. There aren't any vendors so make sure to bring your sunscreen and goodies with you. read more

We camped over Easter weekend. What we weren't told was the fact that the beach is completely closed due to sewage leakage from a plant in Mexico. You shouldn't even get close to the water as it could make you sick. Also unbeknownst to us, you also have to bring your own fire pit and your own toilet as they lock the toilet after 8 AM until 7 AM. It was loud and tons of people stay up partying after "quiet hours" commences. All this to stay in a parking lot on a toxic beach. No thanks. I will be reading allllll the fine print after this. And we will not be going back to camp there again. read more

Only fully self-contained RVs of any kind are permitted here. Quiet during the week and fills up on weekends, holidays. There are rest rooms and cold showers adjacent for day users, however, you are required to pay for the day use permit. Campers quick stops don't seem to be an issue. Tijuana River pollution/contamination makes entering the water dangerous and is prohibited. You can occasionally hear weapons training from nearby Navy training, but just ignore it, there is no danger. Sounds travel long distances over water. The only service is electric and water. There is a mobile tank drain/pump service available. TBH, the sound of the crashing waves generally 'drowns' out the road noise, unless you are really sensitive. It's basically a parking lot, so you hear everyone anyway... but hey, it's happy noise! read more

Silver Strand State Beach, and San Diego was extremely peaceful. Where we were there was hardly anybody there at the end of our beach. We went at high tide, saw the shell search, was not as profitable as it would have been during low tide. There is a $7 fee if you want to stay for a couple of hours, and a $15 fee if you want to stay for the day. My sister and I just walked to the beach and listened to the waves and rejuvenated our souls. read more

We came from Arizona and others behind us could not enter the park until exactly 2pm our spot was empty but they still would not let us in! There aren't any fire rings like website says so we could not have a camp fire! Dogs are allowed in campground but no dog park and it is way too close to your fellow camper! Beach was not crowded at all, granted this was on a Sunday. Lots of shells to pick up and plenty of room to walk around and do various beach activities! Plenty of bathrooms and changing rooms. If you like beaches with lots of shops, restaurants, and bars nearby, then SSSB is probably not for you. If you like beaches with relatively sparse crowds, SSSB might be more your speed. If you want to go for a walk on the beach, or just take in the sun, relax, and have no one bother you, this is your kind of place. Didn't see any surfers when I visited, and you probably won't find SSSB on a list of good surf spots, except for beginners. It may be good for boogie boarding and SUP. Plenty of parking, but they will make you pay. State Park passes are valid here. You can bike into SSSB for free, and it's right across 75 from the Bayshore Bikeway. Please, use the pedestrian tunnels that go under the highway! Oh, yeah, there is a bay side area of SSSB, too. I'll bet that area is even mellower. Dogs are allowed only in the parking lots, on a leash no longer than six feet. Tan responsibly. read more

I have been coming here for around 50 years. First time they've had to close the beach due to contamination so disappointing. The snack bar is not even open and we're just entering the summer season. Tijuana is ruining our beach if you plan to camp here make sure you understand that the beach is closed and they will not let you go in the water, you can go on the Bayside, can't believe this is been going on so long ! for such a wonderful beach with many families here trying to enjoy it! read more

Unfortunately Chula Vista Marina is being redone and there is almost no beach access from the street. So we decided to come here and check out silver strand. I have been in San Diego for 5 years now I had never been to this beach. Having been here twice now with the 1st time being July 4th holiday... we figured since the drawback is paid parking, $20 on the 4th of July and $15 this past weekend with no holiday that it would draw a different crowd. We do like this beach as it is cleaner than some of the other beaches we have been to and can drive up and unload as well as pack up & load the car being right there. The downfall as mentioned earlier is the paid parking. They do have a sign up right now for stingray, as well as contamination. It is not that bad of a drive from San Diego or even if you live in Imperial Beach it's a hop, skip and jump away. The road is rarely busy and if you are coming by walking or bike there is a pedestrian tunnel that can be used. The cool part is the kids can ride the boogie boards without going to far out... careful as the waves are vicious lately! read more

Campers beware: bikes were stolen every night, despite being locked with cable locks. I have a Kryptonite lock and an alarm on our bikes and we luckily didn't get our bikes stolen. The camper two sites away in the front row of the beach had their bike stole as did the camper a few sites down from us on Friday night. I didn't sleep well Saturday night and in the morning more people had their bikes stolen. One person heard noises at 5 a.m. got up and scared the thief away, lucky! There are no patrols being conducted during the evening. It would be nice if the park rangers could patrol. Don't know if that is in their job description or not. BTW - the camp host made her rounds on Saturday warning us to lock up our bikes and that there is nothing they can do about it. Won't go back again. read more

I love a great beach! Coronado beach is usually a favorite of mine but can get pretty busy. Recently I opted for a little further down at silver strand. It's definitely one of the windier beaches in San Diego I would say. Which makes sense why you'll see kite surfers on this beach. I like to come here and hangout on the sand, go in the water and also bike ride on the bike path near the beach. It does cost to come to the beach for the day since it's a state beach. It used to be like $2 an hour but seems they now only offer a day pass for $20. Not a bad beach if you're looking for less people and easy parking/beach access. read more

We stayed at the RV park two nights. It was pretty nice, though a bit crowded and expensive. That's pretty much what you get in San Diego however. The camp hosts were awesome and helpful. There is no sewer at each site, and it's $10 to dump on top of the $65/night. Each pedetal has a 20/30/50a power connection and water. There is a large sand berm right by the "beachfront" spaces, so you really can't even see the beach at all. Bathrooms are large and clean. Make careful note of the fact that they lock the gates--both in and out--very early in the evening. So we had to have our guests move their car A MILE AWAY so they could leave later that night. I guess this might help slow down traffic and maybe petty crime? Overall, in San Diego everything is overpriced and small, so this is a decent choice. We walked the path from Fiddler's Cove to this park and went under the highway, walked the ocean beach, came back and walked the bay side and it was nice and quiet. The State has police patrols and the place is clean except the water which signs indicate is unsafe for contacting because of the Tijuana River. It's off season I think (we're from the east coast) and the picnic tables had high grass around them, many bathrooms were locked and the RV Park has no sewage at the site you'd need to drive to the dump station. Overall it's a nice park. read more

This is the beach i like to go to. Even during busy summer days, it is not quite as packed as the other beach areas north and south of silver strand. Especially in the off season, it's calm and relaxing. Lot's of parking with a small fee. Limited amenities, but there are restrooms and showers to rinse off at. Pretty clean, I have nevef noticed any big issues with littering. We were never really a beach going family.. but during this frightening pandemic, it has been a great place to go. read more

Beautiful beach. I don't know why it took me so long to ever come visit here! I took my kiddos here one afternoon to come ride bikes. I recently took up cycling as a hobby and I knew there was a long stretch of a bike path close by. Upon arriving, you will go through an entry point with a small guard shack. Although they are more of a guide, just a beach worker answering questions if needed. I visited twice, once on a weekday, another on a weekend. The difference? On a week day, we were let in and told to pay the $10 at the parking kiosks located at the end of each parking lot. During the weekend, we were asked to pay up front at the shack. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the amount of people or the fact that it was a weekend, but really not a big deal. Still $10 for an all day pass. The kiosks aren't hard anyway. They look like small ATMs. They may not be easily visible from the parking lot, you may have to get out and walk a little toward the side of the buildings to access them. One machine was really fickle on trying to read my debit card. Still, no big deal really. It did not take away from our enjoyable experience here. There are two main parking lots. The one further down usually has many RV parkers. I believe these are all campers since they do have campgrounds for those camping. The Silver Strand Bike trail is accessible from each parking lot. Look for a underground tunnel, which will lead you under the traffic road to get to the other side. There are plenty of bathrooms, which seemed to be well maintained. There was plenty of room to social distance and everyone seemed following protocols. All in all, good experience both times. read more

Campground Security is lacking in this location because your bikes and things will be stolen by thieves especially when the lights are out. Even if the gates are closed at night, there is rampant bike theft. No campground security is watching the campground for thieves especially at night. All security has to do is shine a bright light at the thief and ask for ID to check for registration and wait for the thief to enter the RV. If the thief does not enter the RV, then that thief lives somewhere else and is not registered for that campsite. Campground hosts can play a role in prevention by being visible, approachable, and aware of their surroundings. But the Campground Hosts are not aware of the surrounding and rampant theft. They can also be a valuable resource for reporting incidents. Hosts should be visible and approachable, creating a sense of safety and awareness but there is no sense of safety nor awareness. Hosts can foster a sense of community among campers, encouraging them to look out for each other. Are the fellow campers thieves? Before booking, research the campground's reputation for safety and security. read more

Special place for my hubby because he trained for 7 years at the Navy Base here at Coronado . It was 8$ to get in the park and were able to park very close to the beach. It's a cool getaway. It is pretty cramped but definitely an upbeat clientele. Everyone is just here to relax and have fun. Downside is that no dogs allowed on the beach thanks to asshats that don't pick up their mess. The 3 star rating is this BS policy that the gates to the park close at 7pm!!!!! I came here to go out and enjoy so E food and beverages in Coronado and come back to relax at my camper. Why not at least 9? Give me a break!! Don't tell me cost since many parks are staffed by volunteers. read more

The so-called "volunteers" come from out of state and stay for the winter with free rent. They hardly volunteer. They act like bitter jerks as if you are trespassing on their property! Their confrontational and authoritarian attitude RUINED our trip. The one uniformed employee Esperanza tries to make excuses or acts oblivious before acting herself as full-on dictator. Worse than your worst DMV experience. Possibly the worst camp experience you could ever have. They monopolized the citizens beach with worthless bureaucrats. These sites need to be privatized and managed by hospitality folks, not grumpy snowbird seniors bitter about life. read more

This is in regard to the Silver Strand bike way. It's a fairly decent trek from Coronado starting at the Hotel Del Coronado and heads down a 7.5 mile bike trail toward IB. Although it's a well maintained trail I felt the traffic regarding runners, other bikers, and those walking that trail can actually make the trail itself a bit compact. Considering the trail is fairly narrow for what it is there is also oncoming traffic coming toward you from the opposite way from those others listed. I found the other "hardcore" bikers somewhat annoying as they seemed intent on passing every person possible acting as if "you" need to get out of their way. It's like watching that one driver on the road weaving in and out of the lanes and cutting everyone off in a hurry to get nowhere. Although there is another bike lane next to the bike trail that lane is on the actual road where vehicles are driving on the Silver Strand. I saw few and far between in regard to bikers using that lane. I wouldn't mind trying the SS again biking in the future but I prefer Fiesta Island. The road is wider and the traffic flows better IMO. read more

$20 flat rate parking fee. Beach is right there in front of parking lot and it's a close walk to the water as well. Clean bathrooms. Lifeguards on duty. Swimmable beach. You could even park outside for free and walk in. I didn't see any bonfire pits. But I did see people bring their own grills. I believe it's also an RV campground. No tents. Also gate closes at night. So check hours, I think it closed at 8p Saturday. Plenty of parking available for 4th of July weekend. Would go here again. Have to drive tho to restaurants and grocery stores. Probably just a few miles out. read more

You get what you pay for, but you will get more out of a public beach. This beach is bland and boring. Whoever that is in charge of this location had labeled this beach as "natural". In reality it's a stupid excuse to not spend money on the location. Imagine the amount of money it accumulates from the many events within a year, or even more. Where does the money go to? Although this is an amazing campground itself, the staff there is EXTREMELY rude and they take their job way too seriously. This is camping, it's supposed to be fun and relaxing. However, they have more of a military approach and they were extremely rude to us because we have a family shared RV that different family members enjoy, and they have a 31-day limit and they track the vehicle itself instead of people. A flaw in their system and the park ranger and staff treat people poorly. I had our kids in the car, and they turned us away and ruined our camping trip. It's a shame to see how a national park will treat people so poorly. I will definitely look into doing something about it as this is just not right. read more

While I adore Imperial Beach, this is my favorite beach in South County. I just go less often because it has cost $10 to visit during peak seasons; though it looks like you can now purchase an all day pass for $8. What to know: The area containing the beach is simply known as The Strand. And it is quite popular with families. It can get super busy here so, if you are the reclusive type or want to sit under an umbrella with a book, try sitting near the lifeguard tower marked #1. It tends to be far less busy out that way, but it will require a little walk to get away from the crowds. But, really, it gets far less busy than Ocean Beach and Mission Beach. There is a campground here with 120 spots. The front gate is opens year-round beginning at 7 a.m. If you are interested in camping, you must have a self-contained vehicle, motor-homes or trailers. No tent camping allowed. Cost vary depending on the time of the year and how many hours you want to stay. This time of year, the cost is $2 for an hour and $2 for up to two hours. Anything more than that, and you are paying $8. But, then, you have access to easy parking which is very close to the water, and also bathrooms and water spouts for self-cleaning. Also, lifeguards are generally working here. Apparently, you can fish for several different types -- including perch and corbina. Every so often, you will find yourself stepping on some wood or trampling through mounds of seaweed. But it's not too, too overwhelming. The beach is mostly clear and clean. Be sure to come fully stocked. There isn't a reliable shop for miles. ...though I did see some beachgoers order pizza for delivery once. read more

My RV needed to get some exercise so I broke her out of her storage facility and cruised down to the Silver Strand State Beach in San Diego. The Silver Strand State beach is a semi primitive campground located on a large spit flanked by San Diego's Coronado Bay and the sea. This place is super duper sublime and well worth the laborious on line reservation system, which is known as [exp.] "Reserve America." Please note that I used a bracketed expletive here.. outta respect for our beloved English language. Nevertheless, I suggest that you hang in here when navigating this online reservation system as it is well worth the efforts. This picturesque beach is the perfect place for those who are looking to unwind, and it is an amazing spot to enjoy a lovely "anti-thanksgiving" holiday, which is exactly what I did. At the silver Strand I learned how to appreciate the sounds of the ocean breaks along the beach. And as an added bonus this beach is not overrun by tourists who all seem to flock at Coronado boardwalk and Main Street. My favorite thing to here was to sit on the soft silky sand on the berm and take a deep breaths of the salty air. A free form of therapy for those with a busy life. You should try this. That is breathe deeply...simply because it feels good. Oh and by the way you can go full primitive here and enjoy some tent camping for you non-glamping types. read more

RV only, asphalt sites. We stayed in space 134. The site is considered a premium beachfront site, but right now, the sand berm is really high and you can't see the beach from the 100's beachfront sites. It's best to back your rig in and not face your neighbor's or you will be boxed in by all their stuff. See my pic. There is an adjacent day use area, that has a beautiful beach with a clear view. In case, you're not familiar with this area, you have to cross the Coronado bridge to go downtown. The island is a busy tourist area you have to go through to get to this beach. You are a few miles from any restaurants or markets,so it's best to bring in all the stuff you need. read more

Unfortunately the water quality, smell and horrid sewage contamination have completely ruined this beach and campground. We have been going there over 40 years, and will not go anymore. It has gotten so bad now, the whole time there the water was literally brown with swage and chemicals. You can get sick without even going in the water. My son recently was sick from fishing there, (not that he would ever eat the fish there anymore, and not like there were any fish...). He got the water on his hands and feet and got a bacterial infection. The bacteria was resistant to most antibiotics, so he had some serious meds that helped, but he is still dealing with scarring. His Dr says they are seeing a lot of this from kids that were at the strand. Needless to say, we will never go back. I don't typically write reviews, but I feel like our story should be shared. The water is now gross gross gross and toxic!! It smells, and even the sea mist, is sewage mist! Yuck. No thanks, so sad that this beach is gone. read more

Our last glamping trip...NOT EVER...but the last one we took! We love Coronado and it's one of the best beaches in San Diego, not to mention published in top ten ratings across the nation. This was our first time to Silver Strand. It is a clean and expansive beach and the campground spaces are right on the ocean, there were lots of beach games and kites due to families and good winds and it's dog friendly (never saw more dogs than here) These are the pluses! The spaces are VERY close together. It is quite NOISY from morning until night. On our trip someone had a drone that seemed to be hovering most of the time...not sure if I like this or not. Drones are novel, but I fear a sky filled with them one day! These are the minuses. We wanted to pick up some beer and took an Uber into town! It's kind of amusing being picked up at a campground by Uber, another novel experience. read more

I had to take a trip down to Imperial Beach from Anaheim and on the way back I decided to take the scenic route and that is how I ended up seeing this beautiful long stretch of the beach and I knew I had to pay a visit. So that very next Saturday packed up the car and headed down to spend the day here. I got here early so parking was not really a problem, they have a lot that is $10 parking all day which is a great price. I set up the camp and took in a beautiful day. Some highlights I will point out are if you have kids there is a lot of cool stuff happening around here. There are giant cruise ships that are being docked that you can see from the beach. You have the naval base nearby so you can get some cool flyovers and see some cool military ships. Plus there is also an airport so you have planes that are landing constantly. My son who loves all these things was in heaven. Another great thing about this spot is that the waves are on the smaller size, so it's perfect for the little kids. Don't expect heavy surf here from what I read up on. The water when I went was super warm which was a nice surprise. It was a fantastic day of playing in the water, taking in some cool scenery and building sandcastles and collecting seashells. Just a heads up seems like the reviews for camping here are mixed so def read up on them if you are deciding on staying the night. But if you are looking for a day of fun in the sun, this is a great spot. CHEERS!!!!! read more
