The local area is very laid back. Quite a few small local type shops. I enjoy the vintage antique shops! It's that 1970's vibe that brings back all the memories! You won't find the big box chain type stores here. The ocean waves are beautiful! The 70 degree something weather is perfect for the stroll on the beach. The sounds of the waves are relaxing. The surfers catching a big wave is exciting! Overall, it's a beautiful experience!

In my opinion, it has one of the most beautiful views of the San Diego skyline. On a clear day, it is just gorgeous both day and night. There are sidewalks on both sides. Parking can be tricky on busy weekends. There is free street parking and there are free lots, but it is much easier during the week or off-season. Normally, you see fishermen, joggers, and people walking their dogs. There are restaurants, hotel resorts, and conference and event venues. Some of San Diego's best known restaurants are on the edges of Harbor Island Park. You can find some lesser known cafes hidden nearby. There are also some boating clubs along the way. For several years, my husband and I would make a picnic at this park and watch the Fourth of July fireworks. It is one of the best venues, if not the best, to watch the fireworks. I often go for runs or walking with my dog there. Also, it is one of my favorite places to take out-of-town friends to simply check out the view and sit on a bench for conversation. Public bathroom facilities are limited, possibly non-existent, so plan accordingly. All in all, Harbor Island Park is a must for both locals and visitors.

The views and trails are spectacular. Portions of the trail can be steep with large steps, take your time while you're trekking along. You will need to visit during low tide if you will explore the actual tide pools rather than traveling on the trails. Tide pools are best accessed from the 1st / main parking lot. I opted to park at the farther north parking lot and explore the trails heading south. If you review the map you can see the first parking lot with restrooms marked, then if you take the fork to the right, there are 2 more smaller parking lots. The walk from the farther north parking lots, to the mail parking lot is a distance so best to decide before you get there if you need to use the restroom. The entrance road is Cabrillo Road, and it makes a sharp turn towards the farther parking lots. To get to the Point Loma Tide Pools and the trails you are entering the Cabrillo National Monument and there is a fee for admission; I opted to purchase an annual pass for a small amount more than the daily fee. There are several different National Park Passes; if you like to visit many, consider the America the Beautiful pass and you can save a lot. I do recommend the Point Loma Tide Pools and trails, you can visit the Tide Pools and Cabrillo National Monument with your 1 admission price and there are so many things to see. Use caution and review the signage at the tide pools/trails, keep kids close and don't stand at the edge for photos and turn your back to the ocean. You'll be able to set up a great shot even if you're not near the edge. There are plenty of plants and squirrels around, remember you're in a National Park so nothing should be disturbed while you're there. Keep it nice for years to come. Add this to your places to see when you are in San Diego. Yes, you should absolutely visit the Point Loma Tide Pools but know before you go:…read more 1. Only come during low tide. There are two low tides and two high tides a day. The information is available online. I believe the tide pools are closed during high tide and for very good reason. 2. The tide pools are located within the Cabrillo National Monument park which means you will have to pay to visit them. This isn't like going to the beach for free. We paid $20 and you can visit both the tide pools and the monument/lighthouse, if you like. 3. Yes, parking is tough but the lot is fairly large and the spots turn over regularly. Apparently, there are two lots. I completely ignored the "LOT FULL" sign and found an open spot in seconds. 4. Wear shoes appropriate for climbing on and over rocks. This isn't like going to the beach and dipping your tootsies in the water. If you have decent balance, even better. You don't want to fall on these rocks. This ain't "a day at the beach." This is straggling over rocks to find sea life in tide pools. This is a spectacular location for tide pooling. You will probably see crabs, including lots of hermit crabs, anemones, small fish, and maybe even medium-sized fish. We even saw an absolutely enormous sea hare (or sea slug). It was black as night and easily half the size of a small cat. We also saw a brittle star, which is a type of small, squiggly star fish. You could spend an hour to two hours here and this is a must-do attraction if you live in San Diego or are visiting. You cannot find this kind of tide pooling just anywhere.

There is a surfer's side on the right and a swimmer's side on the left when you walk down the ramp. The checkered flag marks the middle walkway to each side. There is a beach shower at the base of the ramp for washing off the salty water after having fun in it. There are many eateries, restaurants, grocery stores, apparel stores, and dessert places nearby within walking distance. The area is super lively and there are great vibes.

There's a paved ramp next to the bathrooms to walk down to the beach on, which was a nice surprise because we had the stroller and first thought we'd have to walk down some super steep steps. At the bottom of the ramp, they have 2 working showers to get the sand off. There were plenty of surfers and wake boarders here, but the waves were minimal, so it was mostly just a bunch of swimmers. This was our toddler's first time at the beach as a walker and he quickly warmed up it it and just wanted to sit in the low waves and slap at the water lol.

Actually, hanging out here makes for a feeling very close to Hawaiian beaches-rocky outcrops, clear blue water. On the other hand-which is why I deducted 1 YELP STAR--parking is at a premium here in the residential areas and there is usually lots of kelp & seaweed floating around. This is because the Pt. Loma kelp beds are right off the beach. Another thing to be careful of-when the tides are changing, the water can get rough. Last summer, I was thrown against the rocks by a big wave while I was swimming and the large gash on my foot was not a pleasant sight for lulling beach-goers. Since this is O.B., I have to be honest. Dogs run lose down here all the time. Mainly they are cute, friendly dogs but some guys did have a pit bull here last week causing some bad vibes. I also believe other rules regarding ingestion of substances and liquids not allowed on city beaches happens here on occasion. When I go down, I stick to the outskirts of the beach to stay away from some of the stuff that goes on. What is really a trip: the RATS that live in the rocks behind the beach. I think I was eating some hummus and pita bread last time, and laid a piece down to spray tanning oil on. By the time I reached back for the bread, the darn rat had scampered off with my lunch! It was a trip. Please only come down to Bermuda Beach if you are cool and mellow. This is a different type crowd than your standard dopey beach babes and bums. There are plenty of old-timers that hang here-like Dirk, who is there under an umbrella every day. He will give you advise about how and when and where to swim, because it can be treacherous out there.
