There are horses, chickens, an early rising rooster (!), and turkey next door which add to the rural flavor. We enjoyed an evening drink on the outside deck. He has comfortable living room sofas and chairs. Even though the beds were pretty and comfortable, the linens were a thin, polyester blend which greatly detracted from the rest of the nicely planned items. He has a propane BBQ and the minimum kitchen essentials. The worst part of the place was the enormously LOUD TRAINS. This house is less than a block from the main line and several times throughout the day and night it sounds as if they're coming through the deck !! Bringing EARPLUGS is an absolute necessity. None of us got any sleep the first night there. After we found a store that sold foam earplugs, sleeping in the plastic sheets was bearable.

The directions given were easy and my GPS had no problem finding the address. While the kitchen doesn't have a dishwasher, it's decently sized given the size of the house and we were able to prepare some very solid meals after visiting a local grocery store over in Columbia Falls. The bedrooms are not huge but the queen-sized beds are very comfortable. The linens must have been recently upgraded because they didn't feel like polyester at all. I've stayed at plenty of Westins and W Hotels and this bed was just as comfortable in its own rustic Montana way. Yes, the railroad is about 300 feet from the house but bring earplugs and you'll be fine. The living room is awesome. Satellite TV and free Wifi, and a couple of super comfortable couches. The location is impressive. 5 minutes to the west entrance of Glacier National Park (but leave early in the AM to avoid the lineup of cars trying to get in!). You're walking distance from a distillery as well as a very good pizza restaurant; both of which we sampled and enjoyed.

Brian (part of the staff) greeted us on Day 1, and he was there just about all of the time. He was extremely, extremely helpful. And extremely, extremely nice. Service like this goes a long way. Some special notes which made this place way, way above your typical hotel stay (as compared to mainstream brands like Hilton or Marriot).. The room(s) were impeccable with detail. Everything from the chairs outside of the rooms, the towels, folding the beds/pillows etc... You could tell they put a custom touch on. The breakfast was nothing short of delicious staring with the coffee, which was excellent quality coffee. Not farmer bros or max house, this stuff was top tier. (I am a coffee snob and do strictly pour overs only at home). Breakfast burritos were delicious. And the huckleberry jam and bread was excellent. You get a REAL breakfast here. Sandwiched between a major road to the west side of Glacier National Park and a highly used train track system, it stays quite loud most days and nights. Even being a heavy sleeper, the late night trains had a tendency to wake us up because without air-conditioning, we had the windows up and could hear the train whistles most of the night. Cannot recommend staying here. We had to leave early due to a family emergency. I have emailed them three times to possibly see if the one remaining night could be refunded, but they have failed to respond to any of my emails which is a bit frustrating.

For example, we arrived late one evening from Glacier Park, around 9:00 pm, and I was planning to make some spaghetti for a later dinner for my two kids. When I looked for a pot to boil the noodles, however, I couldn't find one, and then I saw the sign by the phone in the cabin that read "If you need anything," to call their service number. When I called the number, there was no answer, and since I had stayed at the Great Bear Inn before, I walked over to the main building, which was always open for guests, to find someone to help. When I found the place quiet and the manager's office closed, however, I went into the public kitchen area and took a pot, walked back to my cabin, and made the spaghetti. After my family ate the food, I washed and cleaned the pot and returned it to the kitchen. The following day I called the landlady, named "Bunny," and asked what I needed to do to check out the following day. When she asked me why I had called the previous night, I explained I needed to borrow a pot to cook spaghetti, but after I tried calling and then walked over to the office and found no one to help, I borrowed one from the public kitchen area, used it to boil the noodles, and after eating, I had cleaned the pot and promptly returned it to the kitchen. Bunny was irate and scolded me for doing this, insinuating that I had broken some sort of unpublished rule that the kitchen was off limits to guests. When I objected and said that I had both called and walked to the office for help, she was became rude to me, saying that she had an early bedtime schedule and could not be bothered after 9:00 pm. When I expressed my dissatisfaction at this blatant disregard of the customer's need, she became hostile, and when I told her that I had paid over $1500 to stay in the supposedly furnished cabin for three nights and therefore had a reasonable expectation to have the place furnished as was stated in the advertisement. When Bunny insisted that the pot I had needed was included in the kitchen area, I looked once again and finally found it -- but it was stored behind a wooden panel that was stuck due to poor maintenance of the property. When I explained this to her she was entirely unsympathetic and cold toward me... I have no ill-will toward Bunny and her husband Larry who manage the new version of the "Great Bear Inn." I had stayed at the resort twice before in previous years and under the former management my experience then was happy and the service was excellent. However I can no longer recommend the Great Bear Inn because the new management apparently has no idea of what decent customer service means. Let me close by saying that on the day of our departure, Larry, the husband of Bunny, aggressively came to the cabin and pounded on the door telling us to get out because it was almost 11:00 AM. At the time I was washing dishes we used there because there was a sign posted that said that all residents must wash the dishes before leaving, but Larry told me to just forget it and get out... He and Bunny then sat in their noisy ATV jeep in front of cabin until we finished packing the car and we drove off.... Disgraceful and childish behavior, to say the least, and I will NEVER stay at the Great Bear Inn again. For these and other reasons, not the least being the $500 per night price for staying there, I EMPHATICALLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THE GREAT BEAR INN.

The quaint 100+ year old updated cabin was clean and stocked with all our needs, including a surprise anniversary basket of goodies! The host was especially friendly and responsive to our needs. We literally lived on the porches enjoying the morning weather, hummingbirds feeding and incoming changing weather patterns across the sprawling pasture. While some may feel the rare vehicle passing on the nearby gravel road is a negative however, we took pleasure in waving to the campers on Spotted Bear Rd. Chilly evenings were quickly remedied with a roaring fire in the antique fireplace. THE place to unwind after a busy day exploring Glacier!

We brought pizza and beer back to the cabin front porch and enjoy the ambiance of cabin living. Yes, it is right off the highway, so yes, a little noisy, but we seriously couldn't pass up the price! A wonderful couple who own the place, for over 20 years, trying to provide a comfortable place to stay, while maintaining a price that is more affordable for families! Thank you for a great stay! Luckily, we found better accommodations at the Crooked Tree Motel with a heated pool and free continental breakfast as well a large lawn and play structure set away from the highway for my son. The owner of Crooked Tree Motel was exceptional and provided excellent advice.
