They could tell we were tourists but they seemed to tolerate us politely. Not snobby but not super welcoming. It's a nice place with white table cloths so you feel like you're fancy but the prices are reasonable. We had: Fish and shrimp pasta 4/5: Loved the freshness of the shrimp and the smoothness of the fish. Shrimp and monkfish rice 3/5: Monkfish was too firm. Went here yesterday on a recommendation from a friend of mine that used to work for the owner. I totally would not have found this place if not for him. It is a bit off the main drag but worth the time to walk up to it. All of us ordered seafood and I got octopus. This was truly some of the best octopus I have ever had. I will definitely be back here when we return to Lisbon in the fall. The service was fantastic. The prices were very reasonable and the food was outstanding. The cafe is small but had both indoor and outdoor dining areas. I recommend outdoor if the weather is nice. read more

Sinal Vermelho was recommended to us by some new friends. We were still dining outdoors, so we had a very brief wait for a table (plenty of tables open indoors). Sinal is located on one of the small walkways of Bario Alto, and there was a constant stream of tourists coming through (on tours? - not the restaurant's doing - just FYI). We chatted with the couple next to us (they were finishing up as we were starting), and they were clearly satisfied repeat customers. No shortage of tourists in this area! The couvert was good as usual. My wife had the grilled sardines, which were very tasty but a lot of work to avoid the bones (no doubt lack of technique on our part), and I had the monkfish com arroz; sadly, the fish was very bland and too saucy - neither stew nor risotto. The wines were quite good. The service was not bad, but also not nearly as friendly as we had found in most places in the city. This was the most expensive meal that we had during our 2 weeks in Portugal - nothing wrong with that, just worth mentioning. Recommended by one of the locals, we made a reservation for a party of ten. This place is pretty decent and it's located along the main walkway of Bario Alto with the option of indoor or outdoor seating. The ambience was lovely, bright, comfortable and brimming with people. The service was lovely but took some time - about 3 to 4 hours total. Our table was set with bread, Portuguese cheese, butter, olives, and sliced black pork prior to ordering and they were all of great quality, especially the black pork and the cheese. And in Portugal, you'd be charged for anything they place on the table even if you had no intention of eating it unless you tell them to remove it. For starters, we ordered two bottles of Vallado white wine and two traditional trilogy (mixed regional sausage + octopus vinaigrette salad + cod cake) appetizers to share and they were excellent. For dessert, we ordered the world's best chocolate cake and trilogy. The world's best chocolate cake was definitely not the best and we didn't even finish it. The crème brûlée and the rice pudding in trilogy was pretty good. For entree, I got the octopus and clams fried in olive oil and coriander. It was pretty good, however there was more octopus than clams and the octopus was not as tender as most octopus I have tried. Main Course: Pork Tenderloins wrapped with bacon. Broiled and pan seared, Served on buttery rice. Added with a local red wine and it hit the spot. Dessert: Mix puddings. Great place. We were a group of 7 and we're seated promptly on a very busy night. Amazing service and very accommodating to our language challenges. I had the bacon wrapped, pork medallions with the collar greens with bread crumbs. One of the best I've had. My wife had the Bife Portuguesa with fresh potato chips and it was also amazing. The food we had here was decent. Nothing fancy but well cooked. When the bill came, they had added an extra bottle of water ( 3.5 EUR...not seen that sort of price anywhere else in Portugal and I've lived here for 5 months now) and an extra glass of wine (4.50 EUR). When we asked them to correct the bill, they were very offhanded about it. They came back with a partially corrected bill. They had only removed the extra wine. We had to send it back a second time. They were really unpleasant; it left a bitter taste. read more

The ham was good and the fresh cheese was excellent, I'm glad I went for it! Swordfish was tasty and not overdone, and was huge- consider splitting if you have apps and want dessert. TRY IT: Very nice place just off the main walkway in the heart of the popular Bario Alto/Chaido area. We had immediate seating for a late lunch and had a very pleasant waiter. The red sangria was a bit too fruity for my taste but it had very nice bits of tropical fruit. A bread basket is offered with plates of fresh local cheeses. You pay for what you eat of this including the butter. This note is located on the bottom of the menu. We did sample one cheese and it was worth the extra cost. We had the spanish omelet which was as large as the dinner plate, full of fresh vegetables with sauteed and seasoned potatoes which was very good. The BBQ chicken was a quarter chicken served with thick potato fries. The chicken was very juicy but with mild seasoning and not the BBQ taste as expected. It may have been a mild BBQ flavored dry rub. The service, menu selection, and value of the meals are well worth trying this place. read more

The food here is good. We had the chicken piri piri which for some reason was called chicken Lisboa style ( even on the Portuguese language menu). We got the bill and knew we had been ripped off- 1 euro 20 for each tiny butter pat. Really?!? This in addition to the bread and cheese. We knew to send back any starter we didn't want. We've been all over Portugal several times. But 3.60 for butter for three people just makes you feel like they're more interested in ripping off the foreigners than making customers feel like they had a good experience. In this place and in Lisboanoite (apparently connected), the waiters snatch the plates away from you the moment you put down the fork. In Sinal vermelho, they urged me to select from the long menu and then took the appetizer cheeses away after just a few bites, because the menu special was pre-prepared and already cold In Lisboanoite, the waiter always said you are done, right when snatching the plate. Good old southern Europe seems to give in to Euro pressure at the wrong places endangering the value of coming here. read more

I have been to Lisbon many times and this is my favorite restaurant there. Two different friends who live in Lisbon look me there: it is patronized more by local residents than the tourists who find and try it. Lovely traditional Portuguese atmosphere and comfortable seating. I have had good service on all of my visits and the food is very good. They have a near ubiquitous specialty, black pork, which comes from pigs raised on acorns for a more flavorful meat. Yes in Portugal you pay for anything you consume which is set on your table with drinks : bread, each butter, olives, cheeses. If there is something you have no intention of eating, say a dish of olives, ask the waiter to remove it so there is no question you will consume any nor intend to be charged. Portuguese cheeses are particularly good and worth the small cost to try if it appeals to you. Portugal now produces some nice dry rosé varieties of wine and they have them here. If I lived in Lisbon I would be dining here constantly. read more
