This travel plaza was the perfect stop not to really fill up my gas tank...but to buy all my foods, snacks and supplies to last me throughout my day's explorations (and even into the evenings for dinner when I was camping out in dispersed areas on the outskirts of Capitol Reef). That's how good Taft Plaza was. Also here attached to the right-hand side of the plaza was my saving grace...Subway...where they conveniently opened at 8am each day and surprisingly in the best of ways closed at 10pm each night! 10pm for a travel plaza in the middle of nowhere? Fantastic!! For all the tourists out there...all the outdoor adventurers getting ready to explore Capitol Reef, this Subway was ideal for buying a sandwich for lunch and then enjoying it either along a hike or at a picnic table in the park. Who wouldn't want to do that? Lol, a fresh sandwich to eat after hiking at such a beautiful place like Capitol Reef...priceless! Hehehe. So...lol, I bought my breakfasts, lunches, snacks and drinks here...loading up before venturing out each day for 3 my days at Capitol Reef. Then, obviously...like other Yelpers have mentioned...it's free to use the public bathrooms. I'd say there were about 5 bathrooms inside the travel plaza and not only were they private restrooms, (not men's and women's communal restrooms)...but each bathroom was extremely well maintained!!! I mean, to be so far away from reality in this remote section of Utah and Capitol Reef...and for the bathrooms to be so clean, was such a pleasant surprise. Also, the gas. Although I only filled my tank up once, the gas prices were fairly cheap...not even raised because of being right near a remote national park with few amenities around. Basically, they didn't price gauge like others gas stations do situated next to popular parks. And yes...I can't leave out the fact that this plaza was so conveniently and accessibly located next to Capitol Reef!! From here to say inside the heart of the park it was only a 10-mile drive!!! Of course, each morning I gladly stopped inside before journeying onwards to the park. This Taft Plaza was simply perfect for everything! Here's another terrific aspect...cell phone reception was perfect! I easily got good coverage and was able to use my phone before driving into Capitol Reef where once among the grounds, I had zero reception, not even one bar. How good is that!! Overall, this Phillips 66 Taft Travel Plaza was maybe the best, most ideal/convenient/perfectly situated...one of the most memorable and 5-star rest stop/gas stations I can remember in a long time. And for these very aspects, this place just fit in perfectly, blending in with my day's itinerary and explorations here at Capitol Reef NP. What else more can I say other than thank you for accommodating us tourists!!

This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again.

I was looking forward to the quiche based on what I saw on the Yelp pictures but I guess the menu has changed. They only offer breakfast sandwiches now but it's made to order so we got to choose type of eggs and proteins. It did take a bit a time for them to make it so factor that in when planning your visit. The sandwiches were ~$12 each but were pretty filling so perfect for another day of hiking.

Not the kind with the TVs built in (who decided that was a thing?) but they're just very slick and digital. But you know, gas is gas. I don't typically stop here for the restrooms anymore, they're not my fave. They do have a nice selection of stuff inside, though, so be sure to check it out. Foods and drinks and supplies. The pay at the pump is nice, and it's the first station you come to really, after leaving Sigurd if you're coming from that direction. Fuel up and get back on the road.

Randy's came up on the map, and we made our way over. It's a small gas station, but has a pump outside, which is referenced many times in other reviews as being a "lifesaver" as well as a modest inventory of snacks.
