This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again.

Guests of the motel gets free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate from the general store which is open early til late, 10pm I believe. We ate at the deli for breakfast. I was looking forward to the quiche based on what I saw on the Yelp pictures but I guess the menu has changed. They only offer breakfast sandwiches now but it's made to order so we got to choose type of eggs and proteins. It did take a bit a time for them to make it so factor that in when planning your visit. The sandwiches were ~$12 each but were pretty filling so perfect for another day of hiking.

Be grateful in those times for places like this Sinclair-affiliated gas station. I was camped not too far from here and dropped in for some firewood. I think it was like $5 a bundle or so, which is pretty reasonable, and I grabbed a couple for camp. It's a decent sized store inside, so you can also grab all the necessary junk food, beverage, or whatever else will make your day. The woman in front of me in line was looking for an iphone charging cable and while they do normally sell them, they were all sold out. So even stuff like that is still possible to find. And of course, you can find gasoline here as well. There aren't too many other players here in town, or anywhere along Highway 12, so if you need fuel in the tank and you're not sure if you should stop here or keep going, just err on the side of stopping. My mantra on these lonely Utah highways is that if you have a chance to get gasoline, get gasoline. Better to buy twice than run out and have to walk to buy once. Let's road trip in the desert and stop here to get treats that we don't need.

As I walked out, the cashier took down the sign. This is the second business in Escalante where this sort of "bait and switch" occurred.

We were impressed at this really one stop shop for your picnic, camping or hiking needs at this fabulous landmark called Bryce Canyon National Park. Kudos and congrats to management and staff for making visits here extraordinary, worthwhile and entertaining to boot! Make sure to stop in while at the park - it is more than worth it in many ways. This is such a cool gas station/convenience store that is built into the red rock mountain side. Appropriately named HOLLOW MOUNTAIN as it's built into the mountainside I mean this station is literally in the middle of nowhere. At first glance we pulled in to the lot & almost left. We ended up going in & to our surprise realized that the store was built into the stone. I ended up buying a bottle of Kornbucha. The cool part is that the whole store is built into the mountainside. I think they were trying to use a foreign debit card. But it was a bummer for them they didn't have anyone that can help them besides us. Thankfully, we were there at the same time and it was no big deal to help them out. We were able to use the pressure washer for a while to get all the mud off of everything, and then we followed it up with soap and rinse. There were quite a few people that ended up waiting behind us so this place is definitely a necessary place for this area. I really appreciate that this place is here!
