We stayed at Austin's Chuckwagon Motel for a night while exploring Capitol Reef in one of the retro-Queen rooms above the store. This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again. read more

The motel room was basic but clean which served our purpose as we drove through the national parks. The typical amenities were provided. Guests of the motel gets free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate from the general store which is open early til late, 10pm I believe. We ate at the deli for breakfast. I was looking forward to the quiche based on what I saw on the Yelp pictures but I guess the menu has changed. They only offer breakfast sandwiches now but it's made to order so we got to choose type of eggs and proteins. It did take a bit a time for them to make it so factor that in when planning your visit. The sandwiches were ~$12 each but were pretty filling so perfect for another day of hiking. read more

Stayed here for a night on a motorcycle trip. My buddy and I got the 2 room cabin with patio. It's a perfect location to relax and socialize and even get some hot tub time in. Met some other bikers staying there and had a great time! The food/cafe in the general store is worth while and convenient, and in addition the burger joint in the parking lot was top notch! The Chuck Wagon Cabins were nice , but the heavy set dirty guy who checked us in was STRANGE! The TV never worked and he didn't help us to fix it. Not a professional, and we were fine without it for6 days. The cafe on site was the worst most rude chubby old gal didn't even address me while I stood there to order for over 15 minutes. She saw me out of the corner of her eye and still didn't say anything to me. Finally the guy with long hair said have you been helped? Obviously I hadn't, and said to them! I must be invisible, I wanted to order sandwiches, but they don't make them until 11:00. WORST PLACE TO GO! Don't bother unless you like to be treated like this. read more

Our room at the Chuckwagon Motel was comfortable and had all the things we needed on a trip away from home. The only thing we couldn't seem to get was a toothbrush because my spouse left his at home. Every time we went to the front counter, there was a sign up saying they would "Be Right Back." Instead, we drove to the Family Dollar (about 20 min away) to get a toothbrush, but since we needed other items, that trip was inevitable. The general store had some good items. We found ourselves picking up water there and we had breakfast twice and lunch once at the café connected to the store. They're open between 7am-3pm. The breakfast was really good. My first visit, I had a breakfast burrito and the second time I had biscuits and gravy. Everything was so delicious. For my lunch, I had a grilled cheese that was excellent. I ordered a plain cake doughnut to go and, though small, it was tasty. Should we return to the Torrey area, we will certainly book a room at the Chuckwagon again and feast on the food of its café! read more

A gem in Torrey! We are so thankful to find this place on Yelp. You go through the store to the deli and can order a hot breakfast. They have egg sandwiches, delicious fruit parfaits, breakfast bowls and more! There's seating inside AND outside. Their service is prompt and friendly. They have it down "to an art." Linda took our order and knows her stuff! She's obviously great with people and oh so accommodating and helpful. Prices are truly reasonable. I even bought some cool fabric (handmade bracelets) in the general store for just $4.99 before we left. They opened at 7am, which is another perk! read more

The General Store is all I can review, since we weren't staying at the hotel. It was a cute store, and though all the locals and Utah-based tourists were unmasked, we got no grief for wearing ours inside. All the members of the staff we talked to were cheerful and friendly, and we felt all the more comfortable and welcome because of their smiles. We browsed the goods since we were of a mind to get snacks and settled on a small berry pie with a crumble top. Though it was the size of a single-serving pot-pie, it took 2 of us 2 meals to finish all of it because it was so very rich and berrylicious. We ate it outside since those crumbles got everywhere the moment we opened the to-go case, but oh it was worth the mess potential because it was so darned good. We love when we find small towns that still have their old general stores lovingly maintained and properly run. This general store is just that, and we will be super happy to visit again next time we come through the area. read more

Time for an update. After many visits over many years, I can say that this is my preferred, go-to spot for all the "forgot to pack it" or "want to grab some" or "need it for our trip" essentials. Let's get this out of the way first: Yes. Yes, you're going to pay just a little bit more for your groceries or whatever else here than the supermarket in your neighborhood at home. That's the name of the game when you're trucking meats and veggies and canned goods and dried goods across the roads of central Utah. But it's not typically egregious. I just had a massive trip down here with lots and lots of people, and I can say that the attitude was not, "How much can we get out of this guy?" but rather, "How can we help you?" They were kind and gracious as I loaded up on ice, firewood, and a few other things I forgot PRO TIP: They have donuts in the back. A whole lil' bakery. And if you call ahead of time, they'll put together a dozen (or MANY dozen in my case) ahead of time, and they'll be hot and ready at 7am when they open and you go pick them up. The back is also magical with other baked goods like pastries, and they also do really simple but honest sandwiches. They're equally kind and generous in the back bakery/deli section. Everyone was bursting with kindness. Just be kind to them, and it'll come back to you. Don't complain about the selection or the pricing, just smile and enjoy. Because if you're here, you're probably on vacation. And if you're a local, then smile--you live in a BEAUTIFUL part of the world! read more

This place has a lot to offer. I bought snacks, a breakfast burrito and sandles here! Lol Let's talk about the general store. I think it's one of two in the entire town. They have all your camping and road trip essentials at reasonable prices. Now my favorite part of the Store is the bakery in the back. It's tiny but mighty. Just super-expensive. It's the only grocery store in town and they know it - 50 sq ft of aluminum foil is $6.50, a small bag of trail mix is $6.50. I have no idea what I paid or thing I actually bought, but my total bill for supplies to make burgers for four adults was $38. The cashier's response when another customer complained about high prices? "Well then, drive to Loa!" You have to need it really bad to get it from Austin's, because you'll pay double. read more

Fresh fruit! Fresh vegetables! What a beautiful sight! For anybody staying in Torrey, Austin's Chuckwagon is a good spot to get simple groceries (including some healthier options!) without having to drive up the road to Loa. If you're just looking for the usual convenience-store items, they've got those, too. There is a deli in the back, where you can get sandwiches, a few deli meats by the pound, and pastries, as well. Don't be fooled by other reviews saying that the sandwiches are good. They're nothing different than what you would make in your own kitchen--bread, meat, cheese, mayo, a couple vegetables, etc. I had a ham sandwich on wheat, and I actually wished I would have gone to Subway instead, and I'm definitely not a big Subway fan. The main problem with Austin's Chuckwagon is the price gouging. They know you don't have options, and it feels like they take advantage of that. The fruits and veggies were double the price of what you'll find at the Associated Foods Market in Loa. The most simple sandwich is $8 (and it's certainly not stacked with meat). So yes, it's nice to have healthier food options in Torrey, but penny pinchers will find themselves grimacing a bit. read more

I stayed in one of the small rooms over the back of the store. It was pretty cheap, comparatively, and very basic as well, but it was just me. Pros: Close to Capitol Reef NP. Inexpensive and clean Great general store and a good inexpensive breakfast in the store Cons: The building that makes up the store and four rooms above is very old, with squeaky floors, and some stairs in need of repair. No mini-fridge. Could've really used one. I recommend. read more

Spend some time getting to know the folks at the front desk. With 5 generations of Southern Utah knowledge we quickly learned several "stories behind the stories" and off the beaten path excursions that were the highlight of our trip. Not pet friendly as advertised. Shady practices while staying at the hotel and they will overcharge you without your consent. Very low pressure shower. Laundry machines are dirty. Deli is very low quality. Everything in the store is seriously overpriced. Bought baked items that turned moldy 1 day later. I'd suggest going to the gas station to buy basic needs. I have been to Torrey twice and have had the unfortunate problem of having a sick kid both times. This place feeds on people paying a 4 times the regular price mark up on almost expired goods. Totally highway robbery at this place and they treat people very callously. They know there rip off artists and have no moral calms about it. Have always liked this place. Nice people who run it and it is always clean. We always stop here overnight on the motorcycle for rest and food. They have a nice deli and bakery and a store that usually has what you need. There are nearby restaurants if you want something a little more upscale. But this place is pretty much self contained. If you are going to Capital Reef National Park then this is a must place to stay. This is a great place. read more

We stayed 3 nights at the hotel, used the laundromat twice and shopped at the general store several times. Location is very central in tiny Torrey, walkable to a shop across the street and sits right between the several restaurants in the area (a mile or so away, easier to drive to than walk to). Room was clean, roomy, bathroom was updated with newer tub liner and new tile. Fridge in room was very useful, small dresser held what we 3 needed for the trip. Not fancy but very practical and convenient and clean. Laundromat was also clean, machines worked well (best dryer is nearest the door, according to others I met - it worked fine for me, but I only used the one, so I can't compare). General store was happy to give quarters for laundry machines, it also had a good selection of capitol reef shirts and stickers, with nice clean graphic designs (unlike the super busy ones at Dinosaur NM). It sold beer and cider, too (wine isn't sold at grocery stores in Utah, so you have to go to Bicknell, a nearby town for that). The apples and carrots I bought were fresh and well priced, and there were other helpful options for travelers (lettuce, strawberries, salami, cheese, etc). Oh and Tuesday and Wednesday nights (maybe other nights, too, but not Monday), the capitol food truck parks right in front of the hotel. Great food and convenient! Very comfy beds with clean white linens. WiFi only worked moderately but I think that's what you can expect in rural Utah. We liked being minutes from Capitol Reef and found this motel very accommodating. You get a free coffee or tea the next morning in the general store. read more

I see negative comments about selection and price, but look at where you are and start the long drive to the nearest chain or big box if you're so offended. Did not stay here, but picked up dessert to go at the general store on our way through. AMAZING! We had a little key lime pie and a giant slice of Italian wedding cake. They have a little bit of everything here including a life breakfast and sand which cafe in the very back. If you forgot a Condiment, beer or want some handmade bread this is the place to stop. It's really cute and is actually reasonable for being the only place to get such a variety at. The biscuits and gravy are my go to when we come through town. Always good customer service. We had a reasonably priced breakfast and ordered sandwiches to go for our hikes in Canyon Reef National Park. The sandwiches were custom made using quality meats on a fresh French roll. These are fantastic sandwiches! For $1.00 more they will make it a boxed lunch including Potato Chips, small bottled water, fresh baked cookie and a choice of an apple or orange all packed in a nice box with name on it. Total was $8.95 each. A great lunch at a reasonable price. We're going back tomorrow for breakfast and another boxed lunch. read more

Apparently this is a motel too....huh! We were just super happy to find a store of some sort in this out of the way, pretty 'middle of nowhere' town. The store seemed to have most things that you'd need, including a restaurant/deli counter type place in the back, which I didn't check out too closely since I was looking forward to grilling back at camp. The store itself has a very warm back-woodsy feel. It's a place you'd definitely have distinct memories of if you grew up in the area I'd think. This place is no frill, but it has everything you need and the nicest staff ever. The deli do Natalie's is great for a quick bite, but they also have very well-stocked market with local beer, toiletries, and an impressive selection of groceries (they even had gluten free options and avocados- not your typical roadside mart!). The rooms are pretty basic, but they are clean, quiet, and comfortable. They offer free coffee and tea to their guests. The best part- it's only 10 minutes from Capitol Reef National Park!
