I will start by saying I've only ever ordered delivery from Little India Anzac Ave. They're a chain…read moreand their Tauranga branch is my favourite Indian restaurant in the Bay of Plenty...although the competition is admittedly scarce. They range on the pricier side (curries are $16-$19ish), and their menu is pretty standard but consistently delicious. You won't find anything experimental or (for those purists out there) non-Westernised, but sometimes you just want a good old chicken sagwaala and the ability to choose your spice level on a scale of 0 to 20. That's an exaggeration. But also not really. Suffice to say they know 'Kiwi hot' from 'Indian hot' and you can have it any which way you like. It was pay day today and I got rained on on my way home, which equals takeout for dinner (obviously). I ordered the Achaari chicken ($17; medium-spicy) and upsized my rice for chicken pulao ($6). Not because I am giant, but because leftover Indian is amazing for breakfast. And there is always leftovers. Their website is very easy to navigate - you can pay online via credit card or by cash on delivery - and as soon as your order is placed they phone you to say they've received it and the ETA. For the record, I ordered at about 5:30 this evening and it was here before 6. That's very acceptable in my book. Delivery is $4, which is reasonable when compared with other places delivering to the CBD (on average I usually pay $5+). The delivery guy today did call and ask if I could meet him at the Civic (at least a block from my actual address) which was a bother (and which I did not do). However this is not untypical of delivery guys in the city and my address is weird. (BUT I have to say, Delivery Services of Auckland, if you ask for delivery instructions and I type out delivery instructions then I expect you to read the delivery instructions! Sorry Little India, this isn't about you. We're cool.) Phew. Where were we? Dinner was delicious! I like these guys, and you should order from these guys. :D

I wanted the Tikka Banaras they offered in the chicken dish section and asked if they could make it with lamb. They said this was easy to do, but when eating my dish I'm pretty sure they just gave me a standard lamb Butter Curry because the sauce tasted nothing like the ingredients listed. The dish did have a lot of meat pieces within it though, both large chunky pieces and mini pulled pieces floating around. My husband got a dish listed as a "special Rogan Josh" that we didn't recognize from the other Indian places, but same thing it tasted just like the general Tikki Marsala Curry we've had before. So I feel like they really tried to specialize themselves but they were pretty standard. In addition, they don't throw in naan or cucumber sauce. So I wish we could have gone back to a previous Indian place (check out my other reviews)

As appetizers, we started with the pan puri and tandoori chicken taco. It's my first time having pan puri, which is a popular Indian street food. It is deep-fried puffed bread that is crispy and hollow filled with potato, chickpea, and mint. The waiter poured liquid into it. It was a perfect bite. Pita bread was used for the tacos. For our entrees, we had the lamb seekh and tandoori chicken. The spinach sauce was spicy, but enjoyable. I wished they turned the AC up higher while I was eating it though. I also like that they incorporated mushrooms in the dish. The tandoori chicken was tender and the sauce was also nice. Overall, I preferred the lamb seekh while my bf preferred the tandoori chicken. The entrees came with basmati rice, which we needed a refill of, and garlic naan. Dessert was what I was most looking forward to. The menu stated "Tropical Sorbet, Coconut, Lychee." When it was served, the waiter described it a little bit, but didn't mention anything about the lychee. I thought they gave me the wrong dessert. The lychee was located within the center as a nice surprise though. I was still a little confused about the different components of the dessert and asked the waiter again. He wasn't able to fully explain it to me. Overall, I enjoyed my lunch here. I was quite full. The main thing is that I feel like the menu could be a little more descriptive. Maybe they don't want the menu to look busy. BUT if I don't understand what I'm eating, how would I be able to appreciate it.

Cassia is a fusion Indian restaurant (best way to describe it is Indian flavors but not Indian…read morerecipes). Their food is very good / it's one of the best fusion Indian restaurants I've been to in the world after Indian Accent, but the entree section of their menu needs some work. Food 4/5: We got the tasting menu, which was great and I'd highly recommend it but it was a ton of food so only do so if you're quite hungry! In general I thought the appetizers were among the best fusion Indian dishes I had but we were less impressed by the entree section. Pani puri 3/5: Good but nothing special Goat cheese and pepper fritter 5/5: Great quality and awesome flavor combination Paneer appetizer 5/5: Paneer had great texture and was well flavored. Tandoori fish 4/5: Carrot 5/5: my favorite dish of the whole meal. It's a must order! Amazingly cooked and flavored! Blue cod 5/5: 2 of our parties favorite dish Cauliflower 2/5: Was a bit too hard i thought and the flavoring was a bit too harsh (for lack of a better word). Mushroom entree 3/5: Fine but I thought it was pretty average Service 3/5: Service was great for the first half of the meal but after our entree I think they forgot about us. The service slowed down a lot and they eventually moved us to the bar because the next party for our table arrived.

Oh Calcutta serves good ol' fashioned curries like nowhere else I've tried. No bright red Tikka Masala's and sloppy Kormas in this joint Everything about this place makes it great. The service is always impeccable, the seats are comfortable and the food consistently delightful. The only bad thing is that I can never choose what on the menu I want to eat. It all looks just too delicious. Recommended dishes include the Sweet Chilli Chicken and the Chicken Sajahani (another way I rate Indian restaurants is by the quality of meat they use and Oh Calcutta always use tender pieces of white meat--never chewy or gristly). Honestly can't rate this place high enough. The semi-high prices are completely worth it to get such a great, unique dining experience.

This restaurant is a small, elegant jewel that serves extraordinary food. We shared prawn malabari curry and a lamb dish called Punjabi Saag Ghost. Both dishes were filled with exotic flavors. It was served with a delicately flavored rice. We also ordered garlic naan which was fresh and soft. The service was lovely, attentive without being intrusive. The tables were all dressed with white tablecloths. The wine list was appropriate for the food served, and they also had a nice local beer selection. I would recommend Oh Calcutta without reservation.
