She was also patient in explaining the importance of exfoliating to prevent ingrowns (especially as a black woman with kinky hair). Oh, and she has a $30 special for college students. I remember a friend told me about this place, years ago - that you can get an affordable massage done by students in training. I went to the website, scheduled the appointment and I am so glad I gave them a try!! Since they are students, you may get a different person each time - and that is fine with me. I've been two times and each visit was great. They were professional, they asked me questions and asked if I needed attention to specific areas and they ask if you need more or less pressure. I have a sedentary job and carry tension in my neck and back so I asked for attention to those areas. My first massage was done in Feb 2022 and the cost was $35 cash. The pricing has since increased and its now $40 cash. You must bring cash. I also brought enough for a tip as well. I recommend this facility for a massage because they are very personable, they ask how you are doing and provide excellent instructions and take care of you.

The massage areas and spaces are tranquil and comfortable as well. The format is simple: Arrive for your appointment. Check-in at the front desk. Just tell your therapist what you came for, and they will take care of the rest! And, let's not mention...the price for a hour session is only $35!!....more than reasonable!!! The massage sessions are provided by the students as part of their work toward completing their clinical hours for massage school. From the moment I stepped through their doors....to the moment of meeting my therapist for the day....and finally, leaving...."EVERYTHING" was top-notch and professional. My therapist name was Stacy and she was outstanding! She was very focused and attentive. She had great technique and knew exactly when to variate the pressure to rid some of the most pesky knots that often trouble me after heavy workout days or my crossfit classes. I walked in like the "Tin-Man"--stiff as a board, with a tense headache and a couple bad sore-spots....but, walked out feeling completely renewed and so relaxed. I was working with a chiropractor for back and knee issue years ago, two times a week. He was great at what he does but I went to see Michael one weekend. I didn't tell my chiro and went back to see him as our usual schedule. As soon as my chiro looked at my back he was dumbfounded. I asked "what is it?" He said he'd never see anything like it before but my back had totally changed since I saw him. Then I told him I saw Michael. He said it would have taken him months to do what Michael did in one session and asked for his information so he could refer HIS patients!! Fast forward six years. I'm diagnosed with a compressed disk in my neck and having headaches literally every single day, and numbness in my hands. I went the traditional route and was going to PT twice a week. I went for over a month, they did exercises, dry needling, decompression, etc. Very little progress. Two visits with Michael and I'm headache and numbness free! He truly is amazing and a gift. As I started checking websites and making calls, Cara immediately stood out from the rest and I knew that she was who we wanted to work with. After an initial video call, Cara came to our home to answer all (& we had a million!) of our questions about labor and delivery, she went over what we could expect from her and helped us put together a birth plan. We had been told to expect a larger baby and I really wanted to avoid a c-section and medication so we discussed with Cara my wishes and we spoke in length about how important the baby's positioning would be for safe delivery. Cara also showed me exercises on a fitness ball, gave me tips on how to increase my chances of spontaneous labor and brought a fabulous tea blend for me! Cara provided us with her 'labor line' number and I alerted her when I was transitioning from pre-labor/early labor into Stage 1 (she provides a very helpful chart!). I then progressed through the stages quicker than I realized (or anticipated) and didn't alert her again until the urge to push was involuntary and my contractions were very intense and very close together. We called her and she very calmly talked me through what was happening and said she'd meet us at the hospital. Within 30 minutes of our call, we were all at the hospital and 30 minutes after that our daughter was born. Cara was incredible at keeping us calm in a very chaotic situation. It was great to have her helping us communicate with the hospital staff because all of their questions (while necessary) were very overwhelming at that point in the labor process. She even does a home visit after the birth, she was able to ease our new parent fears and answer questions we had about caring for our newborn and breast feeding. Especially in those last 1-2 months, we leaned so heavily on the birth doulas and they responded to all of our questions and concerns immediately. We learned the most about how to care for our daughter and what was happening in my body from DCBD. I went into labor and the birth experience feeling ready and excited, and that's because of the experience, information, and kindness that were shared with us ahead of time. The birth - nearly 4 months later, and we are still talking about Camille! We are going to remember her forever - she was such a wonderful presence during my entire labor and after, and we don't know what we would have done without her. She made sure my husband and I knew what was happening, she advocated for us, she ensured I was comfortable (well, as comfortable as you can be in labor), and she really rooted for us the whole time. I felt safe because she was with us. Post birth - Lolonyo came to our house the very first night we were back from the hospital, and what a gift she is. She taught us how to soothe a baby, how to change a diaper (I'm sure they showed us in the hospital... but I could not remember haha). We had her for several nights during those first 2 months and we were so, so grateful to wake up the next morning refreshed, rested, and with the knowledge that our daughter had been held in loving arms all night long. She was never judgmental and was always supportive as we navigated breastfeeding, safe cosleeping, and everything else. We also had Joanna for several daytime visits. She always made sure to check in on my mental and physical health, which was so appreciated, and she was so helpful. We always felt like we were able to reset a bit after her visits, because she'd leave behind clean bottles and pump parts and a rested (and sometimes still sleeping) baby, and we would have had time to ourselves to shower and get a little more organized. She made our chaotic lives feel lighter, and we loved her for that. As a DCBD member you'll also have the opportunity to be part of a postpartum circle of other parents going through what you did. Shaleen and Elizabeth gave us space to talk through birth and everything that comes after, while feeling supported and safe. I'm still friends with some of the parents from my circle. She has a calming presence, a proactive nature and the composed resilience that make her a very welcome and extremely helpful presence during the most intimate and challenging experience of childbirth. She is also reliable and very responsive. Having Fatima with me felt like having a well-informed best friend to advocate for me and help me think through the many decisions I was making in my labor and reassure me in trusting myself and my instincts. She took the guesswork and decision fatigue away and as someone who is overwhelmed by information overload, this was priceless to me and saved me countless hours of research. My husband and I had several meetings throughout the pregnancy where Fatima explained all things labor and delivery related. Her presentations were comprehensive, clear, and very interesting. These sessions were also used for her to learn our preferences. Answering her questions about myself (for example: what brings me comfort, how I prefer to be attended to during pain) helped me learn more about my wants. She shared many helpful resources in our meetings, from documents to websites to books, and one particular resource about settling in with a newborn was extremely helpful to me as a new mom. Just prior to our induction, she walked us through what to expect, providing helpful concise literature on the topic. And before heading to the hospital she briefed us on some of the decisions we would have to make regarding the baby (such as administering erythromycin and vitamin k shot). When my contractions started, she gave recommendations to try for pain management as I labored. We really appreciated having someone there to take charge in guiding us so we could focus on being fully present in the moment. I believe that her gentle adjustments to my labor positions helped me dilate from one stage to the next. I'm very grateful that I was able to deliver vaginally and I would not have thought to make so many position changes while trying to manage the contractions. Having her to coach and direct that process was invaluable. As labor progressed, she was there to apply the comfort measures we had discussed ahead of time, playing the audio of my choice and sitting with me in supportive silence through the pain. She coached me alongside my husband as I pushed, and without skipping a beat when my baby was born, she took pictures and videos for us (a request we made ahead of time), helped me attempt to breastfeed, and even hand fed me my first post birth snack. I appreciated Fatima's follow ups postpartum as she would check in to ask how things were going, and when I shared my challenges, she provided suggestions that helped me greatly. She is a wealth of information and in working with her, I have benefitted from her knowledge throughout pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. I wholeheartedly recommend her as a doula and would be so privileged to be able to work with her again. Also, her Instagram is filled with excellent content for anyone in the season of babies, whether trying to conceive, expecting, or postpartum, or anyone who wants to support their loved ones through these seasons. Who knew I would be there for the next 5 hours. The event was to officially end when people head home. By 2:15am I stood up to leave. I wasn't the only one. There was structure....with writing down our intentions ice breaker game and then there was good food Inside the house. Even though I got there 2 hours after the initial start there was still some food and drinks. Want to open your chakras? There was a chakra breathing demonstration led by Precious MotherLove. Sit down when doing because you can become light headed. Last but not least were the intriguing conversations around the fire pit. I don't think people wanted it to end. There were a couple vendors there as well so bring a little cash or save for something nice. Not to mention....I was relaxing and looking up at the night sky (not often do I just relax and look up!). I guess I just talked about my night but going back to the people I met. I'm following up. They will follow up and I know for sure we will all be back next month with a friend.
