They have brilliant, brilliant food. Definitely a special occasion-type place. We stayed at a nearby B&B (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/234858-Larchdown-Farm-Reading) that recommended we have dinner here. It's a nice old pub with two small rooms and one larger one. There's no room just for drinks, now, as they do a roaring business in lunches and dinners, it seems. It was very dim and romantic on the night I was there (which suited me fine). The menu is extensive. There's lots of choice, and a lot of game, too. The service was top-notch, efficient but quiet. The menu on their website is representative, but not exact. I had a starter of calves' liver with black pudding and tarragon mustard sauce, with a main of rare roe deer fillet. The wine list was good. Desserts were very nice, too, although my only complaint is that the cheese was far too chilled when they served it. Not a big deal, I let it sit a while. Starters in the £8 neighbourhood, and mains around £17-£20. It feels like the sort of place that celebrities hang out in when they're in the country. I'm told Kate Winslet had her wedding reception here: that feels about right. The posters indicate they get live music in from time to time as well.

Nothing on the road seemed inviting until we saw this vision at the side of the road which seemed to beckon us. You may think an exaggeration but after being in lockdown since March 6th that is what it seemed to us on our first weekend out. Immediately on walking in the staff were so friendly and inviting. Noticeable was the coronavirus precautions in place. This was more important to myself as 'highly vulnerable'. Here, I felt totally safe from the bug. A great pint and glass of wine in their garden area went down too well as we waited our food order. My partners smoked salmon and crayfish salad was, she says, delicious and very filling. As for my baked camembert, with all the trimmings of bread and crudities, was out of this world. An old English type of pub. Great staff, good food, friendly atmosphere. Cannot be beaten. My only negative is that it is too far from home to become my local.

Partner got the £15 blackened salmon and was still hungry after eating it. I got the artichoke soup which was ok/ bit bland and I got my son a side of sweet potato chips which were pretty tasteless and seemed to have just come out of the microwave. My real ale (guest) was pretty watery. All in all. Not a bad place to pop into if you are in the area - but maybe either Order better or eat elsewhere!!

I called up and the guy at the end of the phone was mega friendly and with no hesitation changed our booking time. When we arrived staff where really friendly and on the ball. They supplied great convenient vegetarian options and a wide selection of traditional dishes. I had the lobster, Liz had Mushroom and filo pastry. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Waiter was friendly and quick with orders. Desert was amazing, honey mousse and honey comb. Would highly recommend this lovely retro style country pub, with great service and great food!

Driving down windy one lane roads with high hedges, we second guessed our GPS a couple of times but finally found this gem. Thanks to some magnificent weather, we got to enjoy our meal al fresco. Rustic and serene outside with background noise of occasional livestock or birds. The pub was filling up by the time we left around 7:30 on a Saturday night, but you still had this feel of being the only one there. If you are looking to eat around then I would recommend just calling ahead to make a reservation. On to the food. Started with the salt + pepper calamari, had the polenta cakes and venison for our mains and topped it off with the lemon posset and lemon tart for dessert. All beautifully prepared, letting the fresh local ingredients speak for themselves without burying it in sauces and over-spicing. From the location, to the service and food, tremendously well done. For two we walked out with a 70 GBP bill, but it was worth it. We expected a great meal as we had eaten at the owners London Street Brasserie in Reading where we live, but this was worth the excursion for the environment alone.

Took ages for us to get drinks and menus. When the food came, I had the goats cheese balls which were fine but had no seasoning at all. The other half made the same comment about the vegetable soup. Two of us had the beef and yorkshire pudding, which tasted ok but the meat was really tough. The knives we had were blunt. The broccoli was undercooked and the parsnips and carrots way over. Yorkshire puddings unremarkable. Also it came served with mash and roast potatoes, which was a bit strange. The other two had the corn fed chicken which they liked. Puddings: the ice cream came with 6 different toppings, which you served yourself; nice touch. The sticky toffee pudding was demolished. Not a word of thanks or enquiry about the food when we left. Very odd; like they didn't really care, which was certainly the impression you got in general from the service. Will not return.
