They have brilliant, brilliant food. Definitely a special occasion-type place. We stayed at a nearby B&B (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/234858-Larchdown-Farm-Reading) that recommended we have dinner here. It's a nice old pub with two small rooms and one larger one. There's no room just for drinks, now, as they do a roaring business in lunches and dinners, it seems. It was very dim and romantic on the night I was there (which suited me fine). The menu is extensive. There's lots of choice, and a lot of game, too. The service was top-notch, efficient but quiet. The menu on their website is representative, but not exact. I had a starter of calves' liver with black pudding and tarragon mustard sauce, with a main of rare roe deer fillet. The wine list was good. Desserts were very nice, too, although my only complaint is that the cheese was far too chilled when they served it. Not a big deal, I let it sit a while. Starters in the £8 neighbourhood, and mains around £17-£20. It feels like the sort of place that celebrities hang out in when they're in the country. I'm told Kate Winslet had her wedding reception here: that feels about right. The posters indicate they get live music in from time to time as well.

I called up and the guy at the end of the phone was mega friendly and with no hesitation changed our booking time. When we arrived staff where really friendly and on the ball. They supplied great convenient vegetarian options and a wide selection of traditional dishes. I had the lobster, Liz had Mushroom and filo pastry. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Waiter was friendly and quick with orders. Desert was amazing, honey mousse and honey comb. Would highly recommend this lovely retro style country pub, with great service and great food!

What an experience. We were looking for a great meal a little off the beaten path and did we get…read moreit! Driving down windy one lane roads with high hedges, we second guessed our GPS a couple of times but finally found this gem. Thanks to some magnificent weather, we got to enjoy our meal al fresco. Rustic and serene outside with background noise of occasional livestock or birds. The pub was filling up by the time we left around 7:30 on a Saturday night, but you still had this feel of being the only one there. If you are looking to eat around then I would recommend just calling ahead to make a reservation. On to the food. Started with the salt + pepper calamari, had the polenta cakes and venison for our mains and topped it off with the lemon posset and lemon tart for dessert. All beautifully prepared, letting the fresh local ingredients speak for themselves without burying it in sauces and over-spicing. From the location, to the service and food, tremendously well done. For two we walked out with a 70 GBP bill, but it was worth it. We expected a great meal as we had eaten at the owners London Street Brasserie in Reading where we live, but this was worth the excursion for the environment alone.
