We walked around about mile up & down streets the first night seeking out different bars in the area. And while heading back to our condo, we found Prince Alfred Hotel corner bar. We found PAH to be the best. In our 3 nights in Melbourne, we came here twice. Nice roof-top bar as well as street side bar, great bartenders, good food, great music, clean restrooms and yes IPA beers! Definitely a "regulars" hang-out. LOL, it ended up being the closest bar to the condo too.

I hadn't been to P.A.s since first year uni, which was a very, very long time ago, and for good reason - it is basically like being inside a Melbourne Uni student dorm, but with a few more bar stools. At first it was pretty quiet and I was enjoying myself, though the bizarrely high ratio of Jagermeister to other liquors behind the bar should have signaled what I was in for. By 7.30 the bar was jam-packed. There were guys in lion costumes, large groups in matching t-shirts and an awful lot of screeching. I refuse to believe that my voice was ever that high pitched when I was eighteen, no matter how many cock sucking cowboys I'd had. And my goodness - they were putting the shots away! I have no recollection of drinking that much when I was younger, but maybe the lack of memory itself a sign that I was no different. Who knows? All I do know is that P.A.s is obviously still a favourite for students, but really holds no appeal for anyone else.

When you just want to drink all these factors become pretty important. Comprising of a few different levels, an outdoors area and a lot of seating, Nevermind pulls steady crowds and has a really nice atmosphere. I've never felt uncomfortable or picked up any dodgy vibes. Its just a nice location and is filled with seemingly nice people. Due to the large amount of couches Nevermind is the perfect location to catch up with friends or even hold an event. The only thing I have a problem with is continuously walking up and down stairs to get drinks but it doesn't seem to bother me too much once I've had a few.

Mine of course was one of the last (seems to be a recurring theme with me) but the guy was really apologetic and it wasn't a big issue. The food was delicious and filling. Generous portions for good prices. Everyone loved what they got, and even though it's a really casual, pub type of place, it was all well presented and everything was clean and made for a good lunch. I'd definitely recommend coming here whether it's in summer or winter as they cater for both, and it's in a good location with reasonably good parking. Really enjoyable.

The clue's in the name as to why this is an absolute must destination if you love craft beer (and if you don't, you're wrong); one of the best in Melbourne in my opinion. There's always some interesting beers to try and the selection of 12 constantly rotating taps keeps things interesting. The place is laid back, service friendly and knowledgeable, only downside is that it's not the cheapest place to drink but the quality and variety of beers makes it worth the price. There's also A/C ( very welcome on days like today; 38C). There's a small garden out back which is usually pretty quiet. Haven't tried the food but they have some daily specials which seem popular.

The Alehouse staff are very knowledgeable, as you would expect in a beer nirvana such as this. A great choice of beers are on offer and you're bound to find something you like on the rotating taps (the upcoming beers are listed on a wall next to the bar), but if you don't like anything on tap check out the beer fridges or even try one of their beer cocktails! In the front of the bar there are comfy couches along one side, with larger tables on the other side. In the adjoining room is the same setup, though this can be booked for private functions and it's also where the Wednesday night Trivia Night is held. Trivia is free, fun, and prizes include a bar tab, so you really can't go wrong with that. Out the back is a beer garden with a mix of tables and chairs in a variety of shapes and sizes, with a shady tree or two thrown in for good measure. As I mentioned, the food is great here. The first time I popped in the kitchen was being renovated and my order of fries was forgotten, but since then service has been prompt and the food delicious when it has arrived. I've been to Alehouse a few times now and will keep going back. I have managed to resist jumping off the tram to pop in so far, somehow but that won't last long...especially with an all too convenient tram stop right outside!

There's also some decent beers on the menu for those who want to cobble together their own boiler-makers. The set up is great and the inventory on display behind the bar simply mouth-wateringly impressive. One thing was that there didn't seem to be any whiskey 'bible' listing exactly what they had. Understand the logistics of keeping something like that up to date with prices and new inclusions etc can be annoying, but it would have been fun for us to read over, whiskey in hand, looking for the next one to try. I'm sure the staff - all very friendly and welcoming, with table service - would be able to help steer you toward something to suit your tastes and price range, but I do enjoy the tactile experience of flicking through a full drinks menu.

I personally liked it actually, though I suspect that it was because the service wasn't bad, they had some good beers available, and there was a beer garden out the back. While it might not be one of those pubs that really stands out in my mind, it is still a rather pleasant place, and it certainly isn't like the pubs out in my area. Having good beers on tap also helps quite a lot, and this pub certainly succeeded in this regard.
