Let me start with how our day began after our red eye arrival. We were exhausted and jet lagged after a 9 hour flight listening to an unhappy baby and toddler who wouldn't stop crying. Actually it was a cacophony of terrifying wails all throughout the long flight. We couldn't sleep a wink. So we finally landed and searched for transportation. We ran to the airport taxi desk at the airport and was told there's a flat rate of 350 lira and just to find a cab outside. We easily found a taxi and the driver confirmed the rate of 350 liras but somehow he wound up deliberately making the ride longer, going in loops. What should've been a short ride became a nightmare. When we finally approached our hotel, he didn't drop us off at the front and made us walk with our multiple suitcases across the bumpy cobblestoned streets. Of course his rate was not as he promised and he totally cheated and overcharged us! There's political unrest and we've been told it's commonplace for taxi drivers to make rides treacherous so you'd complain about their system. We've learned to ask the hotels to reserve or ask for the taxi ahead of time to ensure the flat rate of 350 lira without any drama. For our return ride via the hotel ordering the taxi, everything went smoothly. Now. Where do we begin? The Sirkeci Mansion has become our home away from home. I have traveled the world throughout my life and have never stayed at a hotel where you were treated and loved like "family". From the moment we walked in, we were genuinely and warmly greeted at the front desk by Araz. He's a spirited, funny and loving person. Even though we arrived way before our allowable check in time, he not only gave us a room as soon as one was available, he offered us to sit down for the free breakfast immediately. The breakfast is available from 7:30 am to 11:00 am each day and is included in the rate. It consists of a spread of hot and cold options, all lovingly prepared and home cooked. The dining area is naturally lit with plenty of sunshine and the decor is exquisite and professionally appointed. When we entered our double room, everything was in working order, clean and comfortable. Our room was cleaned and stocked with two complimentary bottles of water everyday. There is afternoon tea at the hotel from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Turkish tea is personally served to you in the common living room area with posh couches and there's a tray offering mini cold sandwiches which are made from their local sesame "bagels", cucumbers, tomatoes and cheese. What impressed us the most about this hotel was not the incredible accommodations, meals and amenities. The ultimate treasure and hidden gem at Sirkeci Mansion is the heart and soul of the hotel, Mr. Agah Okay Alkan, the very welcoming, knowledgeable and unassuming manager. He is a one man show. Agah checks you in, assures a comfortable and enjoyable stay, addresses all of your needs and on top of all of this, he offers and leads the local tours as a certified tour guide. Once you reserve your tour with him, Agah will lead you on a journey and you will feel like a local hopping onto trams and walking all around the nooks and crannies of Istanbul. Mr. Alkan has a masters in political science and was educated in England. He literally is a walking encyclopedia and it's hard to imagine he has been doing this for over 17 years. He talks to you in the eye and shares his knowledge with such passion you'd think it's his first day on the job. We actually call him our brother now. Among all the beautiful sites, spectacular architecture and towering towers and mosques, what we will take back to the US is the love we felt from the people of Turkey like Agah. All walks of society we encountered in Istanbul - from the barefooted children begging on the streets to the owners of restaurants and hotels, everyone exhibits the same qualities of respect, empathy, loyalty and humility. Even in this hopeless world infested with self interest and vice, after our trip we've discovered that Humanity is still alive and well. We will visit Istanbul in a heartbeat. We will return to the Sirkeci Mansion to reunite with Agah and our family of hotel staff members and neighborhood friends. We definitely left a piece of ourselves in Turkey and did not expect to.

Beautiful rooms, too comfortable beds, ahh awesome sleep quality. Awesome location, best…read moreconnectivity. Their Buffet breakfast is the best I ever had at my stays. I will point out key areas: 1. booking- too much pain: My husband initially made a online booking, against his company discounts, but he did not get it and he called them , they said you have to cancel it and we will book it right away with discounted rates. while on call we cancelled the booking and as soon as we cancelled, they said no more rooms available book a room for higher tariff, we felt cheated and indeed we were, but when we circulated the email about this to their manager, we got booking confirmed in same room.... :) no more explanation required here :P 2. room service: poor, we had to call them for water, tea , toiletries, laundry several times , else they wont show up. But cleanliness is just perfect! 3. facilities: good 4. room size: decent 5. Food: excellent- Buffet breakfast was awesome, 100's of variety of high quality food for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians 6. Spa/Haman: one free conman Hamam for men/women and that too very small room, but gym was good and so was the trainer there. 7. Location : The best reason to stay here. Metro(subway), bus station, tram, are just down the hotel, the famous Istiklal street is next to hotel... all travel agents, travel and tours are just 50 meters away... Taxi and 24 * 7 food options are available nearby. Its at the heart of city! you name it and get it kind of location :) Basic difference in rooms are : view, if you want a real city then go for western side rooms and for sea view , east. Sea facing rooms are bit higher in price . I preferred Taksim square view , so I choose the western facing room.
