Not sure why the reviews are rough here. I had a great experience and am very happy. Some of it sounds pretty petty/emotional. I went in, had a contact and glasses exam. Came out with a new prescription. After a few days, the contacts didn't feel right and it was super easy to get an adjustment and now they're perfect. PAINLESS. Highly recommend. Some other optometrists will be annoyed if you keep coming back, but these guys want to get it right. Zero pressure. Everyone seemed friendly and nice. People don't understand that vision insurance is basically a prepaid gift card. That's about it. You're not really getting a deal here or anywhere. read more

DO NOT GO TO SITE FOR SORE EYES - MOUNTAIN VIEW. This store is a scam. They charged both me and my insurance for Zeiss lenses, but what I received was clearly not Zeiss. I'm a first time eyeglass wearer and trusted them to give me high quality lenses what a mistake. After just two weeks, I started getting headaches. I took the glasses to Costco for verification, and the optometrist immediately noticed that the cutting was wrong. Then I went to another Site for Sore Eyes location, where the doctor told me, bluntly, "This is low-quality material, we don't use third-party lenses." So the Mountain View location is lying and cheating customers by billing for premium lenses while giving out cheap junk. They also messed up the alignment of the lenses, no proper measurement for pupil center, which is basic optician work. ( failed to measure the correct pupillary distance (PD)--a basic but critical step in fitting glasses. The lenses are misaligned with my eyes, which is likely what caused my headaches. Any trained optician should know how to center the lenses properly based on the customer's eye position.) And it's not just me 4 of my friends had the same issue. This place is run by someone who has no idea what they're doing. You lost me and 12 loyal customers who have now taken their business elsewhere, to professionals who are honest and trained. Learn what customer service actually means before you ruin more eyes and lose more customers. I do not write reviews except for exceptionally good or bad service. In this case bad, as: I got insulted at first sentence bad. Average eye exam, results were "OK". Was told my frames (granted, purchased in Tokyo) were "hard to deal with" when I got my glasses back (squeaks and looseness in the right side lens which I was told was "normal"... when they did not exist before). Pretty much two weeks in, the anti-glare coating starts peeling off. Not time to go back, grace period ends. Ok. I finally manage to go back, bringing TWO frames this time (figured at best we'd work on a commercial gesture even if the only thing I did wrong was timing...). First thing the guy does when I mention the coating: Calls me a liar, accuses me of using some kind of solvent on the lenses (lighting design is my job so... I'm pretty OCD to say the least about any type of lens...). Anyways. Walked off, no time for shady and average quality jobs and certainly no time to waste going on location to get insulted. Negative stars if possible. Sure, I would expect a cheaper pair of glasses to only last a few years and your shop up-sold me on the premium titanium frames that we're supposedly "indestructible." I work in an office, do not play sports and there's no reason a frame should snap while cleaning it with a cloth. This has NEVER happened with any prior frames from other retailers. What about the shoddy work done with the UV coating, Kenny? Why did my glasses get the bubbling from poorly-applied UV coating? Stay away from this shop at all costs. Great place to get an eye exam. They make the process super easy. Frames are available within an hour most of the time. I highly recommend.

I would give them a negative review if possible. Got my prescription glasses ready in two days - upon fitting, they told me that the right eye is minus 3.25 instead of minus 3. When I told them it is a higher prescription, they said that that is because we tested your eyes and power has changed. I told them that they didn't test my eyes and I just wanted them to make glasses based on a previous (my current) prescription. Then the person took my glasses inside and came back after 5 min and told me to "Keep an open mind" and that the prescription would not matter if I am willing to accept it. So basically, they lie (or don't check what they are doing), then try to brush their mistake under the carpet, unwilling to rectify the right lens that was wrong prescription, and finally gaslight me and put the onus of accepting the wrong prescription on me. I also found that he had twisted the glasses a little possibly to make some sort of adjustment which cause my glasses to touch my eyelashes. My eyes are pretty sensitive to change in number and I do have astigmatism so I think I am well within my right to ask for the right prescription. I have never ever had this kind of experience across continents in the 17 years that I have been wearing prescription eyeglasses. read more

Kenny Chang and his team provides great service, including after sales service...which makes this Site for Sore Eyes a great place to buy glasses. Last week, I also starting getting eye exams (from Jenny) at the store and found her both knowledgeable, pleasant, and efficient. They are my go-to optical shop. One example of great service was the shop's work to repair scratches I had made on the lenses of my glasses...that manifested themselves as fog on each lens. Kenny could have said that I messed up...and I would have simply bought new lenses, but he graciously repaired the glasses (buffed out the scratches?) and returned them to me the next day. I am very surprised by the poor reviews for the store on Yelp. Over several visits (and two pairs of new glasses) the quality of service that I have received has consistently been excellent. I went to SFSE to get an eye checkup and new glasses. First, the eye doctor, Dr. Jenny Cheung, was fabulous! She was very thorough and detailed in testing my eyesight. She has a very calm demeanor and explains what she is doing and why. Next I picked out my frames. They have a large selection - so this is what takes time. Their helpful staff ask my preferences and was able to narrow down the choices to styles that would work well with my face shape. They were very patient and not over-bearing while I tried on several frames. They handled all the billing to my insurance and I just paid the difference. All I can say is, if you need a pair of glasses -- GO HERE! First visit to SFSE was in 2015. No insurance, so the glasses were a bit spendy. However, the prescription was spot on and the staff took the time and care to measure everything so the progressive lenses worked out spectacularly. Fast forward to present: the flexible hinge on my 2015's broke. Not surprised -- I got a ton of use (5+years) out of them. Have moved out of state, so went to an optometrist here. What a nightmare! It took 3 weeks to get my glasses, and the prescription was TOTALLY off. Kenny was kind enough to send my original prescription, which I took in to the new place. This time was a 4-week wait. Again, very frustrated with the new place. Apparently they can't follow a prescription. Reading part of progressives was about 1/16 of an inch at the bottom, so I had to tilt my head way back to read anything. Was also so narrow that I couldn't move my eyes even a tiny bit to either side. Ugh... Not at all cool for working constantly on a computer! So what does this have to do with SFSE? I spoke with Kenny and we agreed I would send him the glasses and SFSE would put my former prescription in them. I received them today and am 110% happy with them!! Not only that, it was exactly 12 days for me to mail the glasses, the new lenses to be "installed," and for me to receive them back in the mail. Thanks Kenny! The manager was extremely rude! I'm never going in there again as long as he's the manager. I was looking for some new frames for progressive lens today and was hoping to find something in this store. However, after 10 minutes and about 5+ trial frames that his associate showed me, he became impatient because I did not make a choice right away. He started whispering to his associate to hurry it up and just "give the customer one last choice and if the customer (that's me) doesn't like it then let her leave." He even told the associate to push me to just buy something that he knew was not a good fit. I could hear everything he was saying to his worker since the store is small. It was appalling to hear what he was saying. I immediately told the associate that I'm not interested and was going to leave now. The associate felt so bad because he knew I heard everything and as I was leaving he said "I'm really sorry about that." I told him his boss is really rude and I wish him good luck. I would put zero star on his review but because of this nice associate who has to work for this horrible human being, I'll put one star. read more

A lot of reviewers seem to be unhappy with the owner's demeanor. I actually found him polite and friendly, no complaints there. Unfortunately, though, I'm afraid they either don't know how to operate their devices properly, or don't care enough to do it right. The lenses I received have abhorrent chromatic aberration and incorrect pupil placements. They are very poorly made and virtually useless. I'm honestly bewildered by the negative reviews of this place. I came here after having an issue with my main medical insurance covering my eye exam (the website said it was covered, but when I got there, they tried to extort me for more than $100 instead of the $25 it said I was supposed to pay based on my policy according to the website). Anyway, I called this place to see if they accepted my vision insurance (which arrived just as I was getting home from the other place) and was pleased to find not only did they take my insurance, but they would see me later in the day. As others have said, the shop itself is a bit cramped, but this isn't really a big deal. There was no bull in a china shop thing, so all was good. The doctor was very patient with me as I was somewhat nervous, having not had an eye exam in the 17 years since I was in 8th grade. She explained everything she was going to do before she did it and that helped me not be nervous. When it was decided that I would need glasses, they were amazing in how they helped me choose the right frames for my face shape and for my budget. I told them that I wanted cheaper frames, they didn't blink an eye (pun intended) and took me to the selection of glasses I could afford without having to be resuscitated--no heart attacks here. What really surprised me was that my glasses will be ready by noon on Monday. Today is Saturday and they're not open on Sundays, so I was pleasantly surprised that I would be seeing better so quickly. I, too, had a terrible experience. The guy that runs the place is cocky and rude...he would argue with me on glasses that I picked out...saying they don't look good on me. He'd then recommend glasses that I thought were hideous. So we went back and forth on that for a while. Then, when I picked out glasses I like (even brought the gf to confirm that they WERE cool and he was just being annoying), I asked for Transitions lenses. He put them in and the next few days, they never went dark. It would take an hour or so for them to finally kick in. So I went back to complain. He blamed it on me and said I need to be more patient. I said "when I watch the commercials, they make it look like you walk outside and they turn dark". He said "No, that's just a commercial. You shouldn't fall for commercials"...as if I'm an idiot and don't know that advertising tweaks things a little. I said "I'm aware of that, but it shouldn't take HOURS". He said it does. So I went to another glasses place and asked their opinion. They said they were not installed correctly. They suggested I go back and ask for another brand - not Transistions (can't remember the name of the other brand). When I did, he admitted "yes, this brand tends to go darker faster." The front office staff is great, Dr. Jenny Cheung is awesome and attentive, and genuinely listens to your needs and concerns. Unprofessional & Rude! I called the office earlier today to make an appointment. In the process of doing so I inquired about my insurance coverage. Specifically, I asked what the price of a contact lens fitting would be. The lady who answered the phone seemed confused and placed me on hold( after I had to rephrase the question twice !) . A couple of minutes later a different service agent picked up the phone and began listing prices for contact lenses without asking me why I called. First, I should say that my experience at other Bay Area Site for Sore Eyes has been excellent. Especially the one in the financial district. This one, has been really mixed and lately, just bad. They are very aggressive on the sales and up selling, even to the point of being slightly deceitful about it. I have actually caught the sales people twice in outright lies. Made me feel extremely distrustful of them. I have seen three different doctors there and had experience with them ranging from really truly horrible (an impatient guy that actually scolded me because I got confused during the exam) and amazing great experience (worked with me to get the best tweak to my prescription I've ever managed). But in the end, their smarminess is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I won't be going back. I see my review isn't the only that says they've gone seriously downhill. read more

I was not very happy with the service, the prices, or the quality. They tried to get me in and out as fast as possible. Once I received my sunglasses, one lens was a different color than the other lens. What a crock! I pointed this out and they said it comes that way. When I pressed the issue and said I wanted both to be same color, they said I would need to pay. Screw that. I don't wear my sunglasses anymore. Most of the time, you get what you pay for. I got the glasses from this Site for Sore Eyes a while back, but the memory is still fresh and it stinks. First, the optometrist didn't show up and I had to go back the second time. Second, I ordered anti-glared coating, and they forgot to put it on, so the glasses had to be reordered again. This review is related to the Groupon offering that is currently running - $20 for $150 worth of eyeglasses. DON'T BUY IT.... The selection of frames you can pick from is really small and very low quality. AND then, you still need to pay approximately $130 on top of the "$120" credit of the groupon so it's a complete rip off. Other than the sucky Groupon offering, this vendor is probably fine for frames though I didn't bother checking the frames that were not part of the groupon. I needed a cheap second pair of frames to leave in my car -- I think I'll stick with Costco Optical for this next time. read more

These guys were fantastic--I brought my bedridden Mom's frames in with a popped out lens--she had another place look at it, put it back in, and it quickly came out again. The optician said it was unfixable (which is why the lens came out in the first place). I told him my Mom is in a nursing home with little money--he said give him 15 minutes and he'd see what he could do. Fifteen minutes later, as promised, he had put her lenses in a *new* frame, and refused to let me pay for the frames!!!! He said he likes to help out the elderly! The reviews for this business scared me a bit, but since they accepted my insurance and were relatively close by, I decided to go in to get my vision checked since my prescription expired. My insurance covered the vision exam, but it cost me $60 for contact lens fitting. Easy process and Dr. Jenny Cheung was friendly and helpful. I showed her my old prescription to quicken the process. My vision hadn't changed much and I had only needed a new prescription to order more contact lenses. read more

Wow, I've got to admit I'm surprised by some of these reviews. It seems that they're all polar-opposites! Guess I'll just be contributing to that cuz I've definitely got to rate this on the upper end of the spectrum! About 3 years back, I got a job that had VSP and so I've been going to this Site for Sore Eyes since (including just a few weeks ago)! Before that, I think it had been almost 5 years since I got my eyes checked - but the guys at Site for Sore Eyes were friendly and helpful in getting my eyes checked and glasses/frames (Giorgio Armani!) picked out. They let me take my time and offered helpful suggestions on styles that were "in" and ones that fit my face. But opinions are opinions and so maybe Mike B. took issue with their suggestions - but c'mon, just make sure you like the frames and screw what the guys behind the counter say! Anyway, the optometrist was patient then and also when I decided I'd try contact lenses again (Acuvue Moist Dailies). Can't remember exactly how much I paid...VSP took care of the majority of it! I did also stop by there to buy some sunglasses one time. Unfortunately VSP vouchers are valid only once/year and these sunglasses weren't covered, so I did wind up shelling out a bit - but hell, they were polarized Ray-Bans for under 2 bills! That's one helluva deal (especially since they may have saved my eyes twice...long story)! The manager there didn't pressure me to buy (most the shades are too big for my face) and he made sure I really wanted to buy before I got them. The customer service I received was phenomenal, but for those who are rating one star (w/ all due respect), maybe y'all gotta just be cordial and the manager there would return the favor, no? I'm not sure why there are so many polar opposites in the reviews, the only reason I can think of is that only really good or really bad experiences bring you to yelp. I thought the people at the store were perfectly nice and efficient in their tasks. I went with my sister, who had two toddlers with her, and the staff was patient and kept the kids occupied while my sister and I tried on glasses. I'm not sure what type of service people expect when they go into a glass store, but I hate sales people that hover. I like the fact that I can walk around the store and try on any pair of frames that suits my fancy and then eventually decide on a pair that I like, and fits my budget. I like that the frames mostly had a colored sticker on the ear piece, and that you can tell the price of the frame by the color of the sticker. They were running a special where you got one pair of glasses free with the purchase of another pair, it worked out really well for me=) I have VSP vision insurance, and I get 110 dollars a year for exam and glasses. that's nothing, but I guess at least puts a dent in the total bill. read more
