Really, really creepy. R. (at PA Eyeworks) touched my back for no reason, standing way too close for most of the time (and ya know you can hand frames to a customer to let her put them on herself), he claimed to know what looked good on me and what did not but placed the most hideous frames on me, he wanted me to look at him instead of my looking into a mirror so I obliged each time then walked over to a mirror. On the phone, he claimed to have many options of what I was specifically asking for: they did not. The chairs were so filthy that my husband didn't feel that he could sit down. My MIL was in utter despair. We'd gone to three different eyewear stores. The first was the most awful; they told her they could handle her progressive prescription with prisms, took her money, and proceeded to do absolutely nothing for THREE MONTHS. We both tried calling multiple times, and each time were met with a put-off: "Oh, the lab needs more time, they'll be ready by next week." Finally, she lost patience and demanded a refund. The next two stores were more transparent and told us their labs could not make the prisms in the depth required. Finally, her optometrist referred us to Palo Alto Eyeworks, where Robert FINALLY gave us a yes, and assured us that the lab he worked with could handle prisms up to 15, let alone 9. We were afraid to actually believe him, and I dogged him with emails and calls nearly every day of the third week of waiting (the glasses did take longer than a normal pair due to the lab needing to order special blanks), but he was extremely patient and responded quickly every single time. And when she got the glasses and tried them on, she was very satisfied with the new pair! Imagine all the hassle we would have saved if we'd only gone straight to Palo Alto Eyeworks in the first place! If anyone needs a specialized prescription, I would absolutely refer them to Robert, as an experienced and trustworthy expert. We will absolutely be back the next time my MIL needs a new pair. read more

I have dry eyes and needed a pair of glasses made by Ziena - very few optometrists carry them which is a shame. They have incredibly comfortable silicone seals so your tears don't evaporate very easily. My ophthalmologist recommended them and they are fantastic. Equally fantastic is Robert. He is the best optician I've ever had! Especially if you have astigmatism, you'll appreciate the extra care that he takes to pinpoint where your eyes naturally focus. He doesn't do eye exams, so be prepared to bring him your prescription. read more

Robert charged me $40 to adjust glasses I purchased online. IMO this is totally fair, especially during COVID (although it's a little funny, because the prices aren't posted anywhere on his website, and apparently if you mention the Yelp deal you get "one free tune-up"). But for $40, I expect the adjustment to be damn near perfect. After he adjusted my glasses, one of the nosepads was no longer in contact with my nose, and I had to readjust the glasses myself in the car. He adjusted the glasses in a back room far away from where I was, and while he returned to the front several times to try the glasses on my face, the quality of the adjustment wasn't the same as it would be if he had instant feedback. A week after my adjustment, my nose started hurting. When I took a look, I realized there was a large bruise where my glasses nosepads were. He offered free future adjustments in case I was not satisfied with my adjustment. But I had to take time off work to come to this store (it's not open on weekends), so obviously I'm not coming back. The four hours of PTO I took was worth a lot more than $40. Edit: After looking at some of the other Yelp reviews, it looks like they charge different prices to different people for the same service. I guess it's easy to do this when people book appointments with their email address and you can theoretically Google the customer before they come to your shop (and the prices for adjustments aren't listed on the website!). I've rarely seen this sort of price discrimination in the United States, and it rubs me the wrong way. So I'm downgrading my review from 2 stars to 1 star. read more

Amazing service and high end lenses. I am writing this review 7 years after purchasing a pair of OOVO and Moda glasses (Rx stayed pretty much the same). Both pairs are ultra light weight with custom thin lenses obviously high quality having lasted this long (well had to replace temple caps and nose pads). Plan to return after 7 years when I return to PA. Robert has the experience and he can pick out the perfect frames that will fit your face. They are more high end so expect to pay a premium, but your eyes are worth it and if they lasted this long... my glasses from PAE are a bargain. read more

The owner seems to be well known and regarded in the local community. I bought some lanyards for my eyeglass frames here but didn't have any way to pay for them because I left my purse at home. The owner told me to take the lanyards with me (since he had already attached them to both of my frames) although I offered to leave my glasses with him at the store. I drove home (not far at all) to get my purse and returned with twenty bucks - he didn't seem worried at all - trusted me to return with the payment. Nice guy. read more

tldr: If you want to spend more to get high equality eyeglasses (or with insurance) and personal help from professional eyeglass Robert for fitting. Otherwise this place may not be for you. Pro: - Professional altitude and experience. That's unlike your other eyeglasses shop. He looks like fully equipped. - Help on fitting. I have visit here a few times after for help in fitting the nose-pad on my teeny-tiny asian nose, and the eyeglass leg on my non-symmetrical face & ear. He never complained about it. - The owner Robert is a nice person in general, although sometimes I needed to spend more effort in commutating my concerns. Con: - He may not be responding email in time. Make sure to call - but he's available. I don't typically blame people in their 40', 50', or 60' for not replying email on time though. - Expensive as it can be. If you don't have vision insurance (mine covered me $400+ for my pair), and enough FSA savings(flexible spending account), this can be a problem. Also, I think the Silhouette I bought here cost ~$50 more than some other shop. Not all other. - Potentially limited selection on young & new fashion style. I use Warby Parker for newer style but not a problem. Declaimer: I did not get my vision exam here. ----------- My story: After reading yelp review and visiting many shops, I purchased a Silhouette The Minimal Art. It dated back to 2017 and I had been wear eyeglasses for a few years, but I had been hating to wear eyeglasses and accepted my nearsightedness. I started by using some cheap plastic frame (~$100) and later tried some Lindberg but they were just too heavy and doesn't fit well. I found that Silhouette TMA looked like the lightest frame from a legit brand, so I decided to give it a try. After visiting four shops listed on Silhouette official website I decided to do this with Robert. It did costed a bit more - 400 for frame, ~400 for high-index, anti-glare and Kodak Total Blue lens, and ~150 misc coating. My insurance paid half for it and my FSA dollar paid the other half (it was just that I didn't save a lot in my FSA), which I think was pretty okay compared to my previous eyeglasses (~$400 and I had no insurance). Robert helped me a brunch in fitting and I come back many times with my issues, and my knowledge-less brain about eyeglass fitting - and I did learn something about that. Currently this eyeglass is the longest-lasting eyeglass that I can wear in terms of years, and also in terms of hours. read more

Such a great place to have in town! Fixed my Ray-Bans which were no longer staying on my face for only $5. They seem brand new again. I also asked if he knew of a product which would prevent my glasses from fogging up due to my mask. I bought a pair of high-end frames there over a year ago, not cheap but stylish. Robert helped me choose them with his expert advice and experience. He is also a kind and helpful person. A few months ago, one of the arms of the frame broke off and I only had a chance to go to Palo Alto this week. I figured Robert would try to fix them but that I was too late for anything else. I have a pair of Rx RayBans that I bought for myself as a birthday gift and had my sunglasses hanging on my shirt's v-neck and dropped them. The arm that keeps the nose pad in place was so bent out of shape that the glasses couldn't be worn. For several months I didn't know who I could find to fix these or how costly the repair would be. My mom popped her head into Palo Alto Eyeworks the other week and asked the gentlemen there (Robert) and he said to bring them in so I did the following week. After I showed Robert what needed to be repaired, he immediately took them to the back room. I said, "I just wanted an estimate first on the repairs like how much it'll cost me," and he said, "oh, this won't cost you anything." I was relieved but still nervous the glasses wouldn't turn out the same as before. After a few minutes, Robert returned and I tried them on. They were a bit crooked at first, and I asked if he wouldn't mind adjusting them some more, even though I was weary the arm to the nose pad might just snap and break. But Robert knows his stuff and gladly adjusted it again. I appreciate Robert's efficiency and kindness. I am super happy to have my glasses to wear again. The nylon strand that held my lens in place broke on my pair of glasses. I delayed getting it fixed for at least a month, swearing it was going to be some sort of big hassle, and I was going to be charged an arm and a leg for just a tiny little fix. Well, they proved me wrong. I dropped my glasses off during lunch, and they told me to come back in 5-7 minutes. Came back in 15, sure enough my glasses were all fixed up; the gentleman there put them on my face, then said it didn't quite look right... They weren't aligned properly. So he took them back, fixed them up real quick. Now the most astonishing part was that I was expecting at least $25 or so. I prepared to get my wallet out and he waved his hand, merely stating "I'm not going to charge you for this." Like another review on this page I have not actually bought anything, so maybe it's not "fair" to review them... I looked for sunglass readers at several eyewear stores, and no luck. I had tried one pair off the rack, but the magnifier was in the wrong place for my vision. When I walked into Eyeworks on California Street, Deidre immediately gave me several options to choose from. She said she could cut the lens while I waited!!! That was terrific, especially since I'm heading to my beach vacation tomorrow. I went home, got my relatively new pair of sunglasses, and returned to Eyeworks to have Deidre custom-cut the lens for me on the spot. They are polarized and I could choose grey or brown. She took several measurements, and double-checked her measurements a second time to ensure that everything would be just right. They were pricey, but polarized sunglasses are always pricey, so it is well worth the expense to protect my eyes. While waiting for Deidre to customize my lenses, I found several very stylish, unique frames. I will definitely be back for my next pair of eyeglasses. Finally, near the end of summer, I won't have to squint while reading outside with my non-shaded readers. I love reading outside in my garden during the summer... and now I have perfect shaded magnifiers!!! I'm so happy!!! I even wore them driving home and I could see perfectly through the upper distance portion of the lens, so I don't even have to switch around sunglasses. Thank you Deidre! SUPER happy! read more

I got a pair of glasses there a few months ago (and contacts). Robert was very helpful in finding me something in my price range that suited my needs and was understanding when I said I wanted to think about it. I came back a few days later and decided to increase my price range by quite a bit. He helped me a lot and even gave me a better discount than I expected (as a Stanford student without insurance). When I picked up my glasses, they weren't transition lenses like I had ordered. He let me keep the glasses until the new lenses came in. I've gone in a few times since then to get the glasses re-adjusted - I tend to be clutzy and be around other clutzy people, so they tend to get smushed out of shape. He quickly fixes them for me (for free) and is very friendly. The place is pricier than a big chain glasses store, but I have greatly appreciated the personal service.
