Do not sign up for SiteGround unless you are willing to fork out $200 a year for malware protection, or willing to deal with cleaning up a hacked site by yourself once per month. I signed up for SiteGround in late April 2018 for a full year. Within a few days, my site got hacked by malware. A tech at SiteGround was able to sort out the issue. I didn't do anything with my site for a while after that until a few days ago (early June, 2018). I logged in and found out that, yet again, my site had been hacked and blacklisted. I checked with tech support and was told SiteGround doesn't deal with security issues - my option was to purchase the $200 extra service or go to Googles website and deal with it myself. I decided to cancel my account immediately, as I didn't want to have to worry about my site getting infected every few weeks and was unwilling to shell out an additional $200. Since I was just outside of the initial 30-days for a refund, I did not qualify for a refund. I was told my the customer service rep to send an email to feedback@siteground.com to see if I can get a partial refund. I did that and am still waiting to hear back. Let me start out by saying I hesitate to write this because I had been with them for more than 2 years and I loved their technical support and willingness to help on that end. My issue is with the billing. Here is my story... ...I normally renew every 3 months because I cannot afford to renew for an entire year at a time. I paid in April for the upcoming 3 months and was expecting to pay again in July. I was paying bills when I see a charge on my card in June for $400+ from SiteGround. WTH?? I contact them and they tell me that "the system automatically renews" at one year if the customer does not contact them to cancel the auto-renewal. HUH?!!?! But I was already paid up until July. Why would I have to contact them to tell them, "Oh yeah. My account is current. Please don't charge me". I don't understand how that works?!?! It took over an HOUR online arguing back and forth with an adamant billing specialist before she reluctantly asked a senior colleague about the possibility of refunding the money minus the 3 months I had asked to be billed initially. After all, I wanted to retain the service, but I wanted to pay every 3 months like I had been doing. I was not asking for a full refund because I had obviously owed for what I had used. Pains me to give SiteGround one star. We have been with them for years. We have brought many clients to them. They flat out removed our chat support even though we are paying for it as part of our package. Chat support is supposed to be included in all web hosting packages. When we discovered it was gone we put in an email ticket and were told we either used it too much or asked questions beyond the normal support scope. We were never warned, the chat support was just removed. This also seems to violate their terms of service to inform customers first before changing terms. Not sure if this is legal, but wow, selectively removing chat support and not informing a customer they are being singled out. That is kind of the definition of horrible customer service. Hoping SiteGround makes this right and restores out chat support and IF we ask something beyond scope just telling us so. AFTER YOUR RESPONSE.... Wow... "...we have the right to stop providing support." While factual, that sounds amazingly un-customer service friendly. Basically, "Hey we could just cut you totally off if it was in our best interest, but we want your money..." "just temporarily customizing the support flow" Now that's not factual. We were told by your reps who basically cut/paste the same canned responses that chat was gone for some customers like us indefinitely. Sorry, no other way to look at this as a major downgrade of the Siteground service we once loved. Your chat and support reps mostly were phenomenal amazing, hardworking, heroes. Now almost anything we put in as a ticket we only get links to FAQS that don't answer questions. If you're going to shove more people to your FAQs at least update them. Some refer to SiteTools others to CPanel, others are out of date or woefully missing information. I am so disappointed with the changes they are making to their customer support and new interface. I spent nearly two hours today trying to get some support, then I gave up. I use to tell everyone about their terrific support and online chat services. They have all disappeared. Then I tried their knowledge base trying to find solutions, unfortunately, I was hit with 404 errors. Do not, I repeat. Do not, use this hosting company. They advertise that their shared servers allow for X amount of visitors a month, but this is not accurate. They really mean CPU seconds or processing power, meaning if your site is any more than a standard 5 page non-interactive platform, it won't be able to run on shared servers. Once your hosting is restricted, you have to wait for the next month to change to the next CPU cycle (to get your CPU time back) However, what's worse is- the CPU restriction is removed after 1 month.. which just so happens to be the period of time to receive a refund... So if you actually wait out the time for the next CPU usage time, you're no longer able to get a refund. In addition, if you want to upgrade your plan to add more processing power... you pay the difference as if you're renewing past your first term, so you lose your X% off that you got when signing up. Meaning, instead of upgrading from $6 to $12 (first term rate).. you're upgrading from $6 to $30 x 12 months... even though you're still in the first term. You are punished for not going with the highest available plan when signing up. Lastly, support is fair. You will probably have to try to contact multiple times before your issue is resolved, but at least you get support, as where other places you don't. Overall: If you are looking for a shared server and want to have anything more than a standard 5 page site with a contact form... I highly suggest to you to use another company. The service is very cheap, and is pretty great for the price, BUT their support is terrible for two huge reasons: First, is you want to CALL support, just finding that phone number is ridiculously hard. I just spent a long time trying to find it, and got bounced between several pages that promise that there IS a phone number, but no pages that actually provide it! I had to finally get their phone number by googling it off-page! That's ridiculous!! I finally did get to talk to someone in support (a technical named Yan), and ran into the other big problem with siteground support - they can't really do much to help you! I explained to Yan that I have a store with Siteground, and that I think there's something wrong with my store's settings because I am not getting notified of sales, and asked if he could direct me to how to check on them. Yan directed me to contact Gmail, to talk about my email settings. I explain again that that's not what I'm needing help with, but he simply doesn't understand. So, I ask to speak to a manager, and Yan tells me no, that there's no manager for me to speak to. Finally, he says he'll submit a ticket for me, but I still have zero faith that he even understands my problem, and that he wasn't simply passing me along. Between the hidden phone number and Yan, this is the worst customer service I've had in a long, long time. So, Siteground is great if you never need any help at all, but if you do, this company isn't a good fit. I'll be changing as soon as I find a better one. I would give them 5 stars, but they're pricey. Maybe because of the service they provide and how they provide it. Where Bluehost would not help, these guys do for free and with a pleasant tone in their voices (maybe it's the accent). I have used a few hosting companies throughout my career online and siteground is showing nicely so far. After about 14 years, I left Bluehost for deceptive hosting practices. Siteground is knowledgeable and willing to explain what they did to help you fix your issues. For those giving bad reviews, your reasons are weak. You can use a security company other than one they own or use to keep your site clean. Use cloudflare too, it's free. You can also use wordfence for wordpress installs. You can keep an eye on all the activity on your server by setting up a cron job to email you daily. Ask them to set one up for you. Usually you open backdoors for malware by using the "free" versions of plugins and especially free themes as they are often bundled with junk. The less plugins the better. Keep your sites up to date. If core updates come out before plugin updates, wait a week or so before you update your wordpress or woocommerce or theme core so you don't break the site. Make sure all your permissions are set properly and create a solid password that no machine can crack for millions of years. You can check your own password here https://howsecureismypassword.net/ It's always hard to tell if the hosting company is trying to hook you into addons or not, but malware is everywhere. If you think that your site may be infected, search your file manager for keywords like base64, hack, hacked, islam, china, japanese, .ru, .cn, .jp, .de and a lot more you can research over Google. These are keywords often found in injected code. If you find it, backup your database and content, zip it in a folder, download it and erase the directory on your hosting account. You can use a code editor offline to go over all your directories and files, YES, all. Once your have found it all, delete it. Chances are it was a free plugin or theme, don't use them again. And to the people who are complaining about difficulty navigating, siteground isn't WIX, it's a hosting company. Regular people aren't expected to understand and is why there are people who work in the field. You hire those people if you don't know. So use WIX if you have zero idea. I used Siteground for several years and the quality of its shared Wordpress hosting product lessened over time. Two of my websites became infected with malware while on their servers. I was told I would have to pay extra for help of ridding the sites of malware. It seems like every little nicety that is standard with other hosting provider costs extra with them -- hack-alert monitoring, staging, priority support, caching, are all standard bundles with other hosting providers. Beyond that, heir pricing agreement is horrible. You are forced to pay for an entire year, which is entrapment. When I cancelled my services (just 2 months after renewal), Siteground refused to give me any sort of refund, on two different plans mind you. The reminder emails they sent me for renewal all went to my junk folder, no doubt because Siteground spams its email list. Then they refused to give a refund. There are MUCH better services out there than Siteground. Look elsewhere. read more

January 31, 2019, we held conference calls with our developers both in the US and in India. We had one question, why did you advise us to move to SiteGround? Before even sharing our time-sensitive concern, the US developer said, "We're sorry. We had no idea of the price escalation tactics that Siteground uses to lure new customers. We've advised all of our clients to switch." February 1, 2019, we just concluded a web meeting with our development team in India. There exact words were, we are switching our company web site from SiteGround, as well, and advising our clients to do the same. The purpose of our non-profit is helping sick people. Four times in 24 hours we've requested to speak with a manager. We have no spoken to a manager. Managers are not allowed to speak to customers on the telephone. The non-customer focused process is, to send an email to Feedback@SiteGround.com. We did send two emails stating the time-sensitivity of a phone call. Another day has passed, and NOTHING. I'm really at a loss as to why there are so many negative reviews here. I've been a Siteground customer for almost a year and couldn't be happier. On the rare occasion I have had technical issues (usually my own fault) their 24/7 live chat team get my site back up in seconds; usually 10 minutes or less. My site is very fast and there have been no service interruptions I am aware of in the past 11 months. As for billing which was mentioned in at least one of the negative reviews, I'm coming up on my 1 year anniversary. I have received SEVERAL emails letting me know about the renewal and giving me options and EVERY time I log into Siteground I get a big notice about it too. Thus, the only reason it would come as a surprise and that you'd need to ask for a refund is if you weren't paying attention AT ALL. In other words; not Siteground's fault. I researched web hosts for months before choosing Siteground, read lots of reviews (some of which were real), looked up those I could find on Yelp and ultimately chose Siteground and am so glad I did. I've been using SiteGround since the fall and regret paying upfront for 3 years. I just had a chat with customer support because several people I've contacted for business said my emails go into their spam box. The SiteGround representative had to change some settings and promised this will not happen again. That remains to be seen, but the settings should default to allow people to receive my emails. Avoid Siteground. The pricing may lure you in, but their customer service is terrible. My auto-renewal was set to happen 1/23. So they auto renew at 1:52 AM and so I went to them on 1/23, after I had woken up a bit and asked them to cancel the service. I did not want it any longer. Of course, there is NO phone number for billing, no way to contact management about a refund, you have to use the "chat system" to get help. So I asked for a refund of the $310.80 on invoice 127621. Instead, I received a credit of $104.45 with a line item that said "Service Cancellation". OK, what is that, since my invoice does not reflect any item that would add up to $104.45. No one can figure that one out in customer service. Again, supposedly the best part of the company, not! So I have started a dispute with my credit card company for the remainder of the amount. Yes, I did contact Siteground about the issue, they said their "Billing department" would resolve the matter within 7 business days. BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE!!! We moved our web and email hosting to SiteGround in December. We did this only after Media Temple our current provider began to become overrun with spam. So, on the advice of my web programmer, we moved to SiteGround. We weren't with SiteGround even 30 days when all of a sudden our email began bouncing back to our clients. We began receiving calls asking if we went out of business? I was so shocked to learn our email was bouncing back. Upon calling SiteGround, they said we maxed out our email space and I should delete email. WHAT??? Then they told me for a fee I could move to the next teir and my problems would go away. Well, I had no choice I needed email. So, upon paying the increased fee it took two more calls and a few hours later before they started allowing our emails to flow through again. Then since then (January 2015), your email would suddenly not send out or receive. It would then require a phone call to their support team which is like rolling the dice. One time you may get someone who is friendly but just throws out an excuse (which is never the cause) or you get someone who literally 100% doesn't care that you are experiencing an issue which may be adversely affecting your business. You could spend hours on the phone with them at times and get nowhere. This has happened over and over and over. Emails on your phone and/or lap top will randomly disappear. 100% gone. They can't or don't want to explain. It happens to often for it to be random or isolated. Every issue surround why randomly your email would not send or receive, outside of wrong guesses, they simply can't give you an answer. Recently, we had no choice but to move hosting companies. I can't afford to continue with a company who gladly takes your money, cuts off your email just to increase your rates. This by the way has happened three times since December 2014. I can't afford to have my team members not be able to receive emails for whatever inept reason SiteGround wants to throw out and see if it sticks. After 6.5 months of pure hell, we are switching to Rackspace.com. We spent Friday working with a Migration Specialist at Rackspace. We changed the name servers/MX records on my SiteGround CPanel. Then about an hour after this, no more email. It was all being rejected. This is my third time changing email hosting companies. When we change the records we have never been without email. However, leave it to SiteGround. When I called on Friday evening, Ibal said well when you move away from us this is what happens. Then when I explained he was shutting my business down, he responded with "no, you moved your email". Again, no care. Then I guess max it could take for the MX records to propagate to the internet is 48 hours. Most companies can do it within 24. Not SiteGround; 48 hours later we are still not propagated to the internet. So, Rackspace and I worked today to start making calls. Now Yosef at SiteGround says it can take 72 hours though the SiteGround website itself says 48. Numerous calls and support tickets...................nothing. We are now having to take alternate actions to move our nameservers and MX records.. My advice.............RUN. RUN. RUN. I can't imagine any company doing business is as unethical, inept and incompetent as this one. If you opt to sign with them, beware you will have problems. read more

Wanted to add my story of woe to the others: this is a decent service on the technical side with real problems on the billing and customer service side. I planned to let a domain expire and received a series of emails from SiteGround with subject lines like "21 days left until service expiration". So, I thought, all good, no need to read the fine print since this is a business I trust - sounds like it will expire, right? Wrong. 21 days later I got a receipt for $40+ for the old domain. Called for a refund and cancellation but was told that the domain charge couldn't be refunded - that the only thing I could refund the domain ID protection, which would leave my personal info on the web for all to see. Worse, the customer service on the phone was reprehensible. In a condescending tone of voice they pointed out that the fine print in the body of the email stated that they would try to auto-renew without acknowledging that this is a direct contradiction of the subject line that said it would expire. Very rude and obtuse throughout the call. They haven't violated any laws as far as I can tell, but from all the reviews I've read they regularly violate the trust of their users. Buyer beware: please read the fine print of every agreement and email they send, because if you don't notice any detail, they will be ready to pounce. I definitely won't be coming back. read more

After a year with SiteGround, they tripled the hosting fee without notifying me and tried to charge my account 2 weeks before it was due. My service was supposed to renew for $143.20 per year on 3/29/20, yet they tried to charge $459.35 on 3/14/20. Luckily, my bank saw that the transaction looked suspicious (SiteGround posted the $459.35 charge at 4 a.m.) and denied the transaction and notified me. Service has been decent, but not great and support was lackluster at best, but what really kills me is their billing. Due to unforeseen personal circumstances I had to cancel my account with them. I went through the cancellation process and everything seemed fine. Two weeks go by and I haven't seen a pro-rate refund on the time that I had left on my account. I call in and speak with a guy who says they don't do that. WTF?!! Every other host I've ever dealt with does pro-rate refunds for the time you don't use. How the hell are you going to steal my money like that? I then asked to speak to a supervisor and the guy said that they don't talk to customers and that I would have to send in an email. Wait what?
