I've had plenty of financial institutions in my life... and this one is at the lower tier of the list. I still have another credit union for over 20 years, and it's NOT this one. just because you have SIU as your name doesn't mean squat. Look at the other reviews who give low ratings. One example is receiving funds from an external source & posting "pending"... which is B.S. they even do that with Social Security direct deposits. Many other C.U.'s will offer " Early paycheck".. SIU does not. The ATM is the only thing I use. I use nothing else. I am still shopping for a better option, and better options are not available in the town of mayberry. read more

Guys are crooks! Been a customer for 25+ years. I moved to Texas and the insisted I kept my account open. They recently put my account on this courtesy pay but failed to mention that any time they let my account go partially negative (I'm talking 10-100 dollars not thousands) they hit me with a 25 dollar surcharge. Im talking literally 6 dollar, 8 dollar transactions they charged me 25 dollar a piece for. And I've funneled hundred of thousands of dollars thru this institution, i had no idea they opted me into this nor that i would be hit with a surcharge that amount. I asked if they could sort this out and they said nope and i needed to pay up. I could see "5 dollars" a transaction maybe but when your taking 3-5x's what your funding me. They should be ashamed of themselves. Needless to say instead of arguing them i'll begrudgingly pay their 160 dollars or whatever they say i owe them and close my account asap! 618 people bank somewhere else!!! read more

Hands down the worst bank you will ever find. Customer service is horrible. They never know what they are doing. Have to go in person to do something that should be in the modern era a simple transaction over the phone. If you value your time stay away. If you value your money stay away. I would rather trust the local meth head to be my banker than deal with these people again. I wish I had gone to the local loan shark to get a loan, FAR more trustworthy. Awful experience - I ended up needing the NCUA and a private lawyer to get them to give me my money and close my account: I held an account with SIUCU for 6 years and didn't have many problems, excpet for the excessive overdraft fees. I asked for overdraft protection to be taken off my account and was assured that it was. Then, I took a closer look at my statents and realized they had been holding my checks, not letting the deposit go through (sometimes for 15+ days) until they ran all of the transactions they could in order to charge me overdraft fees. I ended up making a claim with the NCUA, who decided in my favor and ordered them to refund the hundreds in fees and close my account. Suprise: they didn't close it, claimed they didn't get the closure form I sent via certified mail, and tried to charge me hundreds more in fees (they never even took off the overdraft protection). It has taken me the better part of 5 months to get this bank to close my account and give me my money back, and I wouldn't have gotten anything back if I didn't have the NCUA and my lawyer to help me. read more

They charge $5 to cash a check from SIU Credit Union so if you receive a check you have to spend over 10 min and a finger print to cash along with the 5$ charge. Bullshit. read more

Absolutely the worse to deal with. They do what they want and will not resolve issues. I have had continuous insurance coverage on my car since purchase, they claim it lapped in November and they are trying to charge late fees on insurance they bought on my car. Even my Country Companies agent faxed them coverage statements. After 2 times them saying they didn't get them, they were faxed again. They are still trying to charge fees and just saying they're working on it. Pathetic!!! read more

Put it a mortgage application with SIU. Received a pre-approval amount and was told what information was needed to finalize the amount. After that the loan officer became completely unhelpful. Refused to give us the information we requested, only answered less than half of our questions, refused to take the information we sent her (same info she requested), and refused to tell us how to get what she said she wanted. Also tried to tell us the payment we have on a bill couldn't possibly be that amount. Like we don't know what we pay and to whom. Then refused the OFFICIAL letter from the government we provided for the information she requested! Then after only 2 WEEKS cancelled our mortgage application because we couldn't provide her with non-existent information or information she didn't tell us about or immediately pay off a loan in full. Overall completely confusing, unhelpful and rude. Will not be doing business with them again and will be telling everyone we know to go elsewhere. read more

Had an account for 3 years, was not happy at all. First, they have no set funds availability. They take a check and hold it for as long as they want, many times inconsistently. I saw this on a number of occasions while I had an account. Secondly, they have no useful customer service on nights or weekends. On a Saturday night something happened with my debit card and they couldn't deal with it until Monday. They use a third party for their debit card services and they can't do anything other than deactivate the card. Finally, they are belligerent and greedy about their fees. They triple charged me fees and proceeded to as difficult as possible in looking into the fees and had a very rude tone. They constantly insisted that I talk to them on the phone instead of email. Finally I talked to their AVP of Finance, Sandy Taylor and she was even less helpful and understanding. I have dealt with Chase for several years and have never had this many problems or bad customer service experiences. I would stay far away from them. read more

I tried to leave a review on the Marion's branch site but it was deleted. I have nothing but trouble with Marion's branch. If you go to this company use Carbondale or Herrin. I went to make a skip pay last year I went in person and made a payment and told the girl at Marion that I wanted to do a skip pay. She said they would take care of it. I get an email stating I needed to contact them over my account being delinquent. I called and the collection guy told me I owed them for 3 months. The girl didn't put it in and made me late those months and dropped my credit score 300 points. I told him the situation and he didn't care, he just demanded a date for me to come in to pay it. They didn't look into it, didn't fix my -300 points, no compensation at all. In fact I'm still trying to rebuild it back to where it was. Then Marion branch insisted on telling me I didn't know my account password and kept telling me it was incorrect. Then told me I owed them CPI insurance for all the way back from March of 2019, which is total BS because I had the insurance company fax proof of insurance to them the minute I got it. I had to call Carbondale branch to ask what the heck is going on with my account. I told the lady they were trying to charge me for CPI and kept telling me my password was incorrect. She told me that she has no idea what they are talking about because she had my proof of insurance in front of her and my password is indeed "correct". Save yourself the headache and either go to the main branch or a different place all together. They are hounding me over owing them $10 for last months payment, but, here I AM still minus 300 points on my credit score over one of their employees mistake. I have done business with SIUCU for over 25 years, and they treat everyone well. The best rates on car loans, and very fair. I have had no problems with requests or deposits. Much better treatment than area banks. Better access and lobby hours also. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. They seem to protect your ATM card and account better than area banks. Their online banking is in real time, not delays of a day or more like at area banks. read more

I have had the same experience as the other reviewers in regard to deceptive fees. Likewise with the belligerence when one complains about their errors. I originally switched to a credit union to avoid the outright theft of other large commercial banks, but I'm finding that the SIU Credit Union is much, much worse. read more

The atm lets you overdraw your account. I tried to do an inquiry first but could not figure out how. I overdrew the account by $11 which I transferred the amount to cover the withdrawal in less than an hour. They charged me $28 for an $11 overage. If their ATM would have let me see what was in the account I wouldn't have overdrawn it in the first place! I have a car loan through them (you have to be a member to get the loan) after we pay it off we will be closing our accounts. (I do not use SIU CU for my primary bank, but my daughter does.) read more
