I specifically asked for the food to be well done so that we didn't get limp chips and it seemed to work. The fact that I have to ask this is a little disappointing really. Surely it should be a standard that the food served is cooked properly. What we got was well cooked and crispy as asked. The cod had good texture and flavour. I did find the food a bit oily as though the oil was not quite hot enough or the food needed more draining before serving. What Everton seafood has going for them is good value, $3 of chips, 2 potato cakes/scallops and 2 pieces battered fish was just under $16. It wasn't famous but not bad, and a cut above the other options in our area so far. The hunt continues....

The guys behind the counter are always very knowledgeable about where the fish are from and are pretty honest about the way to cook them, and if they're not for you. All that aside though, what I really really super duper love about this place, is their half price cooked seafood after 4pm everyday! Woohoo! Get a huge crumbed basa fillet and some chips for $3? How can you beat that. Just wait a little and the big sign will appear on top of the counter and away you go! It gets me time and time again. I could never resist purchasing a kilo or two. You'll find plenty of fish, prawns, squid on display and some chilled products in their fridges. The staff are very helpful and really know their stuff when it comes to fish. I'm still new to cooking seafood creatively, I usually, like to just slap it on the grill and douse it in lemon juice. There is plenty of time to learn different ways of cooking seafood, but for now, I'm getting hungry just writing about it. You need to go up to the mezzanine level to find the Asian offerings, with the lower level looking conspicuously like any Western corner store, with sweets, soft drinks and a heated cabinet full of good old Aussie meat pies. As you enter you soon realise your taste-buds are about to go to heaven. They have a front section as a bakery selling pies, pastries, sweets and everything in between and the back area up a few steps is an Asian grocer. The best part is the $4 Banh Mi - I'm going to make a big call, definitely one of the freshest I've had in Brisbane in a long time. There are tables on the sidewalk but also inside the cafe. The place has a great casual feel and the staff are friendly. The menu is small and well priced in this competitive cafe strip in Wilston. I had the savoury mince and it was just what I wanted. The coffee was also pretty good. All in all a great experience and somewhere I'd happily try again.

She told us she was a local, had been doing chips for years and couldn't see any real difference in how they were cooked. She managed to burn the fish while explaining this. In her defence the portion size we went home with was reasonably generous and they certainly weren't the worst we'd tried in Brisbane. We'd arrived near closing time but noted their espresso counter while we were there. They look like they do a roaring lunchtime trade in Merlo coffee and cafe food too.

The produce at the Gabba Fruit Market is fresher and often much cheaper than that sold in the supermarkets and if you shop according to what's in season, you can fill a couple of green bags for around $30. They also have a great sales rack, selling produce that's nearing its expiry. I hate to think how much the supermarket giants must throw out just so that they can have display shelves full of "perfect" or under-ripe produce, but it's so nice to see places like the Gabba offering its old produce to customers who are happy to slice off the mushy bits and, of course, get a bargain. The Gabba Fruit Market also sells a small range of packaged, canned and other goods such as dairy products and bread. They often have great specials on staples like canned lentils and dried pasta. Make this part of your weekly ritual too!

Last I went there were some pretty good specials on dry goods, like two boxes of cous cous for $3 and jars of olives for $2 each. The counter staff are pretty nice, just watch out you don't get bowled over by one of the burly guys wheeling around stock in trolleys.
