Ray is quite the butcher, with recommendations of meat and barbeque combination packs to how to cook your very expensive rib fillet roast for a very special occassion. Don't overcook it he said... as he pulled me aside and took me through a step by step. Much appreciated... although I did end up undercooking the piece of meat having underestimated the weight... or in my case... guestimated. I always appreciate butchers who don't feel the need to put glad wrap over all their meat because of flies or whatever reason they want to give... it just gives the impression the meat isn't fresh and no one has bought anything. These guys have the freshest reddest (not fake red, real fresh red!) meat on the market here. The prices are really good too and if you've had a hard day wheeling 2 young screaming kids around, these guys may even 'accidentally' throw in a spare crumbed lamb cutlet... because one looked kinda small. So generous in their nature, boisterous when called for, these guys know their meat and are proud to share the good meat knowledge. Will be back!

I'm currently auditioning new butchers in my new 'hood and I recently visited Barrow Lane for a few dog bones and walked away with eye fillets that were so perfectly roasted for Sunday night dinner, this could be a winner. The times I've visited Barrow Lane I've been greeted with a supremely friendly smile from the guys behind the counter and they've always been happy to share tips and tricks for how to best prepare or cook the cuts you've purchased. They do have a $10 EFTPOS minimum so either grab some cash or do a bulk buy.

It has the smell of a fresh produce market and it has plenty of supplies. The Vegetables and fruit are a mix and match of some absolute beauties and some majorly bruised up items. However, if you do take the time to dig though you'll be pleasantly rewarded with cheap prices. Also, there is the butcher that goes by the name of Chopshop. There's a range of fine cuts and diced meat in a wide variety of farmyard animals. In addition they have a smaller range of premade and marinated meats ready to slap onto the barbecue or the pan.

As a family run business, the service reflects this. It's not too much trouble, as other Yelpers have mentioned, for the team to help you carry your shopping to the car. You get a choice of bag or box and there's a small section at the front of the store perfect for stocking up on slightly blemished produce for smoothies or juice. I most recently bought a bag of pineapples for $5 that have been well used in smoothies this week and even a chicken dish for dinner. There's also a small area for organic and gluten free flours, coconut oils, yoghurts, cheeses etc. All in all Charlie's is a one-stop shop and great for a weekly produce shop or for the one-off "I've run out of..." type of stop in. If you're not keen on driving to Everton Park, they also have online ordering with a flat $5 delivery.

After being on the road traveling for close to two months, I had gotten used to eating what was cheap and convenient, not taking nutrition into consideration most of the time, so I was craving some colors in my diet. Charlie's had a few fruits I'd never seen before, one of which was a Jackfruit, cut open and on display. Also available were coconuts, passion fruit, pineapples and other tropical deliciousness. There's a small selection of dairy-free cheeses, yoghurts and ice creams, as well as other vegan food options. We decided to get something to snack on from the cafe section. I chose a falafel which, after reading another user's review, I realize I should have asked if they were made that morning because it was cold (which I wasn't expecting) as well as soggy. Unless it was freshly made, I wouldn't recommend it. My sister ordered the banana "nice-cream," which was sinfully creamy and somehow still 100% dairy-free. Even the chocolate drizzle on top fooled me! We also got a few of their smoothies, all of which had the option of being organic (for an extra charge) or regular. Overall, it was a fairly pricey but deliciously healthy mini meal. There's a lot of hype to this place but I think it's well-deserved - worth a visit!

The Mitchelton Farmers Markets feature many of the same quality stall owners that go to all of the Jan Power's series of markets, but there's also a few others who I only see a Mitchy. I love getting a nice cold drink from the Lime man - all his products are Lime based. He sells amazing Lime cordial to take home - remember to bring my your glass bottle when you're finished and get $1 off your next bottle. He also sells Lime salt which is delicious on avocado, or to rim your margarita glass with. There's a couple of different German Sausage stalls to pick from, if you like a good german sausage and sauerkraut. The one up in the middle of the markets (just off the little side street) sells you the sausage cut up on a plate as an option, instead of in a bun - so good for people like me who want to limit their bread intact. There's also dumplings and waffles and crepes and coffee stalls, so don't eat breakfast before you come. There are plenty of delicious bakeries that sell organic bread, spelt bread, sourdough and other types of bread. There is also a man selling heavily discounted cheese that is close to the Best Before date (but still is good for a bit longer) so you can pick up some bargain cheese. There are heaps of fresh produce stalls selling fruit and vegetables. There's a stall that just does apples and has about half a dozen different types of apple (with sample and tasters available) and they also do amazing cloudy apple juice. The markets run from 6am to midday, but so many of the stalls sell out of the product well before closing time, so the earlier you get there, the better.
