Then a veterinary technician--not a veterinarian--told us they would not be able to see our dog. I pleaded for one thing: if they couldn't treat her, could a veterinarian at least provide enough pain medication to ease her suffering until we could find help elsewhere? The answer was simply no. So we picked up our helpless dog and drove another three hours home while she whimpered and cried in pain the entire way. No family should have to watch an animal they love suffer like that after being told to come in for care. Emergency medicine isn't just about saving lives--it's about relieving suffering. In our case, compassion seemed to end at the front desk. We left feeling abandoned, heartbroken, and utterly disgusted.
