I did see a little coffee/water area as well. The day we went wasn't super crowded at all and I felt like the kids were able to enjoy everything. My son didn't want to leave. The inside has a very old-school bowling alley vibe. Music was playing, and the concession stand is right at the front, with lanes on both sides. You place your food order at the counter and receive a buzzer for pickup. I was actually surprised by how large their menu was for a bowling alley, and they use a classic flat-top grill to cook everything. After placing my order, I stepped aside to wait. One of the cooks asked if I had a buzzer and let me know it would go off when my food was ready--it came off a bit abrupt, but nothing major. There were plenty of lanes available, even with the crowd. The bowling shoes, however, looked very worn and outdated. The laces didn't look the cleanest, which made me a little hesitant, but I still went ahead and bowled. Food took about 30 minutes, but everything came out fresh. I ordered the Philly, which was pretty good. I also tried the blue Kool-Aid, though it tasted more like Powerade. The music selection was good and kept the energy up while bowling. It's not huge, but there are two big bowls, plenty of ramps and rails, stairs and a snake run. There's plenty for skaters of all levels in the $500,000 park. Some bowls are deep, some ramps are steep, but there are lots of easier sections for beginners. If you're not into skating, there are plenty of benches perfect for watching. The park is open to all ages, but skaters play at their own risk. Protective gear is recommended for adults, and kids under the age of 12 are required to wear protective gear (knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet) and be accompanied by an adult. The park isn't just for skateboarders. Roller skates, inline skates and bicycles are welcome at the park (Monday is the park's designated bike day). The skate park is located at Tobey Park, behind the Board of Education (at Central and Hollywood). It's free and open from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. in the fall and winter and from 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. during the spring and summer.

But my wife wanted to visit the Memphis Botanic Garden for her birthday, and somehow this place turned me into a calm, peaceful woodland citizen for a few hours. First off, the weather was absolutely perfect, which already gives nature a huge advantage. Then you walk the grounds and realize this place is legitimately beautiful. Ducks casually living their best lives, koi fish gliding through the water like they pay property taxes there, birds chirping, flowers everywhere, waterfalls and water features--it's like stress gets checked at the front gate with your $12 admission fee. And let's not overlook the fact that there were food trucks... and one of them was selling cocktails. Suddenly being outside didn't seem so unreasonable anymore. What surprised me most was how peaceful the entire experience felt. It genuinely pulls you away from the noise of everyday life and drops you into this quiet little zen mode you didn't know you needed. Also, if you're planning a wedding or outdoor event, this place is loaded with gorgeous spots that look like they came straight out of a magazine. Seriously, every few steps felt like another "this would be an amazing wedding photo" moment. When the weather cooperates, this place is hard to beat as a happy place. I'm starting to become a fan of Memphis' smaller green spaces. There are small parks and massive…read moremedians scattered around the city that are usually less crowded than the large parks. That's why I love Peabody Park in midtown. It's smaller and less crowded than nearby Overton Park, and it's got some unique features. There are two large metal sculptures by local artist Yvonne Bobo, a pavillion, and a large playground. But the best thing about Peabody Park is the splash park. During the summer, it's packed with kids trying to cool off in the intermittent spray from fountains, geysers, misters and rainfalls. The park is also home to the Raymond Skinner Center, a community recreation center that has special resources for people with mental and physical disabilities. The splash park at Peabody Park is free and open daily during the summer.

Peabody Park is my favorite park in midtown. There are multiple slides, swings (including infant…read moreswings), monkey bars, fun little tunnels and playground games for the kids. There's also a little pavilion near the playground and a larger one off to the side near the splash park. During the summer, our girls love to don their bathing suits and run around in the motion controlled splash park sprinklers. There are smaller ones for the little kiddies and larger splashes for the fearless older kids. The equipment is all in good shape, and I never worry about my kids getting hurt. When we go out for family day, this is one of our favorite stops.
