I attended Sketchbook for about a year to work on my college portfolio. I worked with Mrs. Wonju, Mr. Soomin, and Mr. Bryan. They'll all give you great constructive criticism on your pieces. I ended up getting into SCAD, MICA, Parsons, and Otis. On the side note, attending Sketchbook also helped rapidly improve my art. When working on my portfolio, Mrs. Wonju encouraged a lot of medium exploration and skill development (E.g., anatomy, color theory, etc) even when I was new and hesitant. I was under Mrs. Shin's portfolio program for about 2 years and in those two years i went from not haveing any fine art experience to haveing a full blown portfolio and invaluable art experience that got me into some of the best art colleges with decent to hefty scholarships. I had Ms Wonju for almost a year to help me build a portfolio to submit for college. Needless to say, she has been more than just a teacher to me. She helped me develop my skills and techniques, she shaped me into the artist that I am today, and for that I'm thankful. After hours and hours of work and effort we both invested in each project, I had successfully finished a 2 year long portfolio in barely 10 months. Without Ms. Wonju, I wouldn't be pursuing Ringling College's computer animation program (with a great scholarship too!). I was a sophomore in high school when I met her, so I spent two good years pursuing my portfolio. Within those two years, I was able to produce fundamental pieces and conceptual drawings geared toward my desired major. Like most parents, mine were skeptical of me pursuing a career in the arts, but Ms. Wonju convinced them otherwise. Ms. Wonju is incredibly organized. Working together, Ms. Wonju and I hit all the requirements needed for each art college. I've known plenty of people who have procrastinated on their portfolios, which hindered them from applying to other art school. Initially, I felt very insecure about my limited knowledge of art. I didn't know anything about color, or how to use different mediums, or what made a good illustration. With Ms. Wonju's guidance, I felt more confident approaching different ideas and how to present them. Ms. Wonju taught me to be confident, and to give myself more credit. Ms. Wonju cares about her students; she checks in with her students frequently and makes sure their artworks are the best they can be. Ms. Wonju is incredibly dedicated to her students. One time, Ms. Wonju sat patiently with one particular student for hours, trying to help her out. Creating an art portfolio is extremely exhausting, but Ms. Wonju makes the process painless. Plenty private art teachers will force students to draw or paint something phenomenal, but with no soul. Ms. Wonju welcomes creativity and helps students make their imaginations into reality. I am very happy to have this awesome art studio around this area. The class is fun and creative for younger kids. My kids started the class around 4.5 years old. He loves the class a lot. I love how the teachers guide them to draw and express their own creative art instead of just looking at some art and replicate it. I noticed that all the kids were working on the same project but all of them are so unique and different! It's their own authentic work instead of just replicating the same thing as a class. I had Ms. Shin for about 6 years and I cannot stress enough how amazing of a teacher she is. I do mean it when I say that you will never find a teacher like her anywhere else. I learned a variety of skills with the time that I was with her. I was able to discover new talents in different media and subject matters. I, too, was disappointed to see that other studios required students to follow a certain way to create their portfolio.
