There are much better places in Mammoth to rent your ski gear than from "ski renter"!!! First of all, the staff there is rather unprofessional. The place is old and dingy. The gear selection very limited. I got a pair of demo skis one early evening. BUT I returned it first thing the next morning. Once home, I looked at the skis closely and noticed that a bunch of thick yellow grease had been left in the bindings. Who does that??? Well, "ski renter" does obviously. Then I started to doubt the quality of the tuning. Was I going to take a chance? Long story short, NO! Moreover, one of the employees there reeked of alcohol. Another, the one who took care of my bindings, was drinking beer in the back as I was leaving. And that's while the store was still open. So when I replayed all of this in my mind later on, I had no other choice but to ask for a refund! read more

Solid choice to rent gear and save some $$. They are significantly more affordable than anywhere else in town (or on the mountain), while still providing top-notch gear and no nonsense service. They had us in and out in less than 30 minutes. We showed up like hobos with all our bags from the airport and they were super accommodating and funny about it. Even let us change into snow gear in their bathroom. I was a little bummed about the demo reservation we had made. I called 1-2 days before to confirm we could rent powder skis (the mountain got 15' of snow!) and was assured over the phone that they had plenty and there was no need to set any aside for me. When we arrived I was immediately told they had rented out all the powder skis... The guys there tried to make up for it and fitted some bindings onto brand new demos for me. They worked fine for the mountain but suffered a bit in all the powder. It appears demo reservation requests are first come, first serve...or you have to be in the know with them! Overall, happy with everything the provided. The guys at the shop are super chill and good people. Will be happy to rent with them again. read more

Great local shop. Rob was beyond amazing. I arrived (after taking the shuttle) in the morning around 8:15 the day after a major blizzard that had shut the mountain down. Rob took a brand new pair of skis out of the package, mounted bindings, and then offered to close the shop for a while in order to drive me back to my condo. He actually did just that. This is service beyond. Also, I had originally delayed the rental due to the weather and had called to let him know, and I received a credit back to my credit card about a week later. read more

I am an Eastern middle aged skier. On the slopes about 30 days a season. Kids live West Coast so we ski Mammoth for MLK weekend. Reserved demo skis, regular ski, and a snowboard package online. EZ. Look, you can spend double at the mountain and sit in their fitting factory, or save yourself the $, and meet some locals having a good time. This was the very first time in skis for our 8 and 10 YO kids, Scott and everyone else made our boys feel like VIPs, giving them tips and help in putting everything on. This place is great if you understand ski renting isn't rocket science. The crew is super laid back which gives it an old school vibe. I read a number of bad reviews and didn't agree. If you want the best of the best and A+ concierge service go somewhere else and buy skis instead of renting. This is the quintessential small town ski shop, like the old days. The owner, Rob had a great sense of humor and classic optimistic attitude. If you have a good attitude you'll love it, if you're a complainer like the 1 star reviewers go rent and complain somewhere else. Like one previous review they were drinking beer in the back- turns out it was a couple of locals using their tuning equipment. I think it's customary to tip small shops with beer. They made my first time snowboarding gear renting experience a breeze! Found them here on Yelp and was able to find some good deals on their website. They let you take time deciding which boot sizes fit you the most and they will carefully install those for you. They also try their best to find the snowboard that best fits your height (for instance, I'm pretty petite and I'm so glad they had a right board for me!) Originally we rented our boards for two days, but since some of us got sick the next morning, Ski Renter was nice enough to let us return the boards early and refund us :) Overall, it was a great experience renting with them. This was my first time going to Mammoth and I didn't know there wasn't any rental service near the mountain. My husband yelped some places and this place seemed not bad. The place itself is very cozy and had lots of products. The price itself wasn't that bad either. My sister and I rented boots and snowboards and got charged around $60. Now to the employees: James is the guy you want to go for. The guy with the hat was very rude and didn't help us out, just standing there. When we asked question, his attitude was very dull and rude. I don't know what his problem was but he seemed like he wasn't ready to work. But on the other hand, James helped us out with finding the right boots sizes, and helped us out with finding the parking at the mammoth. He was very enthusiastic, and answered all of our questions. So if you want to start your day bright and happy, go for James. read more

Stopped in at ski renter at the beginning of our week long trip, and didn't need to go anywhere else. These guys were fantastic. They had the right equipment for the changing conditions and had the knowledge of the mountain to set us up with the right stuff. Absolutely recommend for groomed trails, fresh powder, and tree skiing equipment. Unfortunately we didn't have a chance to do any cross country stuff but I know that if we had this is the place we would've gotten that gear from as well. One note I'd like to add is that our party did "splurge" and get demo gear each day which was the most expensive but well worth every penny. They didn't rent us garbage. DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. I had an awful experience, came in Thursday night before they closed to rent skies for one day. I am an advanced skier. I rented performance boots and skies, they came out to about $55 I think for one day. A nice younger guy works there then an older judgmental man who's tall and not friendly and very rude man also. I went up was fine I fell a few times 1 time my friend had to hike up the mountain because my skies were crossed and my poles stuck under them and my skies wouldn't Un-click. I fell assign and my knee popped because my ski did not I click when I fell like they are supposed to. I ended up taring my ACL or MCL had to go to the emergency room and my skies got taken. The mountain found them the next day for me. But when returning the man was questioning my state at the time and questioned me getting hurt. He tried to charge me extra fees. Didn't even say he hopes I'm okay. I am on crutches and a brace 24-7 and will need surgery. Mainly because my skis did not pop off so my knee got hurt bad. No sympathy or concern at all from this man. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

The worst ski shop I've ever rented from and I'm not joking or exaggerating. Terrible attitudes and customer service. These guys are just in it to make their money, they don't care about you, your fun or your trip. First time in Mammoth and I will definitely not be renting here ever again. I should've listened to the bad customer service reviews. First I called ahead and the guy who answered was short and rude w me. I called to ask if I could reserve on the phone to save us both some time when I got there. He said no with zero emotion in his voice or alternative option to my request. At the end he said his name was Rob. When I picked up my skis later that day the guy was super short again and rude, had the same attitude as the guy who spoke on the phone--he told me Rob wasn't even in town. Rob is the manager and was on vacation that whole week so it was a lie. He said they always lie and tell people on the phone that their name is Rob so they don't have to be held accountable... This was the only guy working the shop that day and I called that morning. With the same voice and attitude I believe it was him who answered the phone earlier... sad that he couldn't even say "I'm not Rob but I was the guy on the phone who spoke w you how can I help you?" Next, I've been to resorts since I was four years old in Colorado, I'm 27. Anytime we have rented from a ski shop if there is a bad weather day or we take a day off for injury/rest, the rental shop will not charge us for that day. We show proof on our pass that we didn't go and they don't charge. This is normal there. These guys wanted to charge me an extra day because I didn't bring the skis back on a bad weather day w 17 mph winds, a snowed in car, & icy roads, and then check them out again on the morning that we go on our second ski day... it takes so much time and they are clearly not the type of shop to hang onto your gear all setup for you so I would've had to sit there while they rerigged my gear the next morning and missed time on the slopes w my group or held everyone back. I figured it was the most convenient option for everybody to hang on to the skis as I always have. The funny thing is, the people we were skiing with rented from P3 right around the corner and P3 didn't charge them that extra day at all... totally chill about it and understanding. I figured these guys would do the same as that's the courtesy I'm used to at these skiing resorts but nope. Total jerks about it. I asked kindly, showed them pictures from the day before where we stayed home and made brunch, all the way into the evening to show that I did not touch my gear that day. They cracked a couple jokes with me about not bringing them brunch and I figured they would be understanding at that point, but then no they continued to hound me for that extra day. They said somebody else could've rented the skis that day.... when they have an entire shop full of hundreds of skis because it's the end of the season... The likelihood is small. I should've gone to P3. I will not be going back to this place. It was my first time at a ski shop in Mammoth and I was really excited for the trip and this energy/customer service started and ended the short trip really poorly for me. The guys did not show any empathy or kindness in demanding that I pay more for a day of bad weather that was out of my control. They even said that they have a whole bunch of other skiers that are willing to pay... good. Because I won't be going back. I'll be at P3 with friendlier, assistive, helpful, and way better customer service/attitudes who deserve the money. I will definitely not be using this joke of a shop and I suggest you don't either if you want to enjoy your vacation! They probably need our money so bad because people don't wanna rent from them. After my elbow dislocation/break last year, those close to me subtly and not-so-subtly begged me to stay off the snowboard for a little bit longer, so I needed to rent equipment for our recent trip to Mammoth. Found Ski Renter and this place is as good as it gets for the price. Here's why: ***Location, location, location: The store is right in town, on the main drag, on the way into where the ski lodges/cabins are. We were headed to Tamarack Lodge (awesome btw) and we would have drove right past it anyway, and with them allowing you to pick up the day before, it was so convenient for us to pop in on our way to the hotel! ***Saving Time: Speaking of convenience, they let you pick up your rental the previous day after 4 pm and return the day after before 9. For us, we were able to pick up my ski package at 6 as we arrived into town so that we'd have them for the morning and not have to deal with renting as we tried to get out onto the slopes in the rainstorm (that's another story) ***Price: Can't beat the price. On the mountain for a standard ski/poles/boots package it's going to cost $40. With the online discount for reserving, my package was $24. ***Knowledge: I read some of the more negative reviews and can kind of see where yelpers like Todd W are coming from. There is a lot of hustle and bustle going on in the shop, so if you have questions or something doesn't seem right, you need to push to get resolution...but these guys really know their stuff. A friend of mine had put in my head that I should try snow blades and when I asked the guy helping me about it, he merely told me I could try them for the same price. I had to press him to help me decide but once I did, he explained that with a lot of fresh snow, I might sink as opposed to glide and he helped me go with 142s which was still different and fun but no sinking. I had a great experience and will definitely rent here again. read more

i'm pretty easy-going when it comes to most things and hate to give negative ratings but, unfortunately, ski renter deserves a 2nd negative review. one of the girls that organized our mammoth trip had printed out 20% off coupons for ski renter and so we came here to rent our gear. when we walked in (a group of 11), one would think they'd be friendly and extra helpful to our large party. however, service wasn't particularly friendly, helpful, or knowledgeable - they didn't even greet us and got irritated when we (surprisingly) didn't understand their "system" of where to sit to get what when. even worse, the guy helping me was fiddling with the bindings, started to wax my board (yay!) but stopped when he realized the machine was broken (boo!), and made me feel like he was stoned and/or didn't know what he was doing. the snowboarding gear is in AWFUL shape. the bindings were extremely difficult to work with and they only have strap-in bindings. i had to STAND in order to get the bindings to work, the boots didn't even have the straps to tighten them, and the boards were completely banged up and not well-maintained. they close at 7pm, ok to return equipment 9am the day after, and i think they open around 8am. so since the slopes open at 8:30, i'd recommend picking up your gear here the night before IF you decide to get your gear here but i wouldn't go back here again and regret not going to the larger and more organized and friendly (at least on the phone) mammoth sporting gear that also has a 20% off coupon online too. read more

Don't go here if you value your life! I'm serious! Dead serious if you're a skier. The only people that seemed knowledgeable about setting up a ski rental was Rob, the manager and a kid named Jeremy. Otherwise you're signing your life away. Everyone else that helped me pretty much only knew about snowboarding. How bad you ask? I went on a weekday when business was slow and told them I'd pick up the equipment later that evening. When I came back I pointed to the skis and boots and had them confirm that it was the one I had gotten sized earlier that day. Went to the slopes and the skis were not fitted for my boots. Had to haul ass back down, and listen to them try to place the blame on me. "May be you adjusted the skis yourself, and now they don't fit". WTF! Do you think if I knew how to adjust them myself I'd be dragging my frozen sorry ass back to this shit hole? Then I get back up the slopes and wonder why one ski keeps releasing so easily, but I'm like forget this I'm not going to waste a whole day going back down this mountain. When I do go back to the store the next day I'm told that one of the skis was adjusted for someone who weighed much lower than me, and the bindings weren't set correct in other ways. Nonetheless, the same excuse was, "may be you adjusted them yourself"...as if I carry screwdrivers with me and readjust my bindings for kicks. At first Rob wanted to give me a voucher for a free day, like I'm gonna risk my life on their shoddy equipment.... Thankfully he gave me a refund on my second day...you can decide if that is adequate enough. In short, change your name to snowboard rider and save the lives of hapless skiers like me. If you are a skier, go to footloose or some of the people at Kittredge such as Doug know their shit. read more

Nice spot for a decent price on ski kit in Mammoth Lakes. Picked up a pair of Rossignol Pursuit 100's, poles and boots for three days for under $130. They had my preferred size and all. Gear was in good shape and nothing broke while skiing. The staff is cool except they charged me for a helmet I didn't rent. read more

We showed up 15 minutes before close on Christmas Eve and the place was packed. They took care of our group of 7 with snowboard and ski rentals. We didn't get out of there until almost 7pm. Everyone was super friendly and staying late didn't change their attitude. They seem to love what they do and have a lot of fun doing this and engaged in conversations while fitting boots or skis. Our kids decided to try snowboarding for a day and switched back to skiing. So we went back the next day and exchanged for skis. The process was easy and hassle free. Literally the worst service I have ever had at a ski rental. Picking up our rentals took two and a half hours in a cramped little room with no space to move around, with unhelpful to straight up rude employees who if anything made the process worse. One of my friends was trying on ski boots, and while her left foot fit her right foot not. The trogladite who was "helping" her told her "if the left foot fits, not my problem". The rental stock is abysmal. First of all, they have exactly two size of ski pants available: XL and youth small. Not a lot of wiggle room. And don't get me started on the fucking helmets. I had a reserved helmet and I told the bearded motherfucker at the register, who proceeded to take 5 fucking minutes to amble over to the backroom, disappeared for an inordinate amount of time, only return and tell me there was nothing available. This place is a stain on existence. Please use the rental across the street, which is far better. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about this place. My only complaint is that I didn't find these guys sooner!! Until my recent visit to Mammoth, I was renting skis from the Mammoth mountain rental (you know, the one you find on the mountain, by the slopes). But last year, I went to Whistler, and there I found many independent rental shops that had great prices and better equipment. So I thought, next time I go to Mammoth, I'm gonna shop around! I searched for ski rental shops in Mammoth on Google and came across Ski Renter. Their price for the demo's was less than what Mammoth mountain charges for their "sport" skis, plus they had 20% off coupon on the website, so I decided on this place. I called to ask if I needed to make a reservation, and they told me to just come in. My husband and I showed up on Friday morning around 8am and there was no line. We have our own boots, so we just needed to get skis. We told them we wanted demos and were looking for all mountain skis. They gave me Salomon Geisha and hubby got Salomon Rocker 90. The guys who work there are really friendly, down-to-earth, funny, and efficient. We were in and out in 10 minutes (in that 10 mins, they even waxed the skis). But I should mention that by the time we left, there were 3 separate groups waiting, so the earlier you go, the faster the service would be. We were both really happy with the Salomon's they gave us, and are considering purchasing them later in the season when they go on sale. I disagree with the other reviewers who said their gears are beat up! My Geisha's were practically brand-new, they only had 5 days on them. If you are looking to rent skis in Mammoth, I highly recommend Ski Renter. Do NOT rent from the Mammoth mountain, they are way over priced!! And often super crowded. I know you are thinking, it's more convenient to rent from the mountain, but trust me, it's not that much of a hassle to rent from off-mountain shop. read more

We rented a jacket and two bibs from here. It's really cool that they do have clothes to rent as most places on the mountain don't. However, we decided to buy the gear afterwards which was a mistake. Not only were we significantly overcharged (did our research when we got home), but we were charged more than the agreed upon price in addition to the rental charge. We called and were told to come in and they'd work it out but we were already down the mountain. An email sent by us after that to see if we could send it back for a refund was ignored. No effort was made on their part to rectify the issue. read more

Not a great experience with these guys. We came in from out of town just after Christmas and I reserved three snowboards online for my daughters to ensure that I wouldn't have to go store to store in case some places were out of gear. I walked in just after 1pm on the day of our reservation. When I asked for our gear the guy said that they didn't have it - they rented out our gear. I told him that I had reserved our gear online - and a reservation means they hold on to our stuff and aren't supposed to rent it out. His response - "Yeah. But we didn't think you were coming." The manager jumped in at this point and kind of rudely stated, "The mountain closes at 4." I explained to them that we weren't going to the mountain to snowboard. I reiterated yet once again that if I pay to reserve equipment then they needed to keep that equipment in stock. Whether they think I'm coming or not is irrelevant. There was nothing in the reservation contract that stated the equipment needed to be picked up at a certain time and since the return time was 7pm there were still several hours in the day. The response - "You're right." Long story short, the guys that worked there were finally able to cobble together some boards and bindings that fit but it took an additional 45 minutes out of our day. There was never an apology or discount offered for their mistake of renting already reserved equipment. I wouldn't recommend this business. Find somewhere else. read more

I had a great experience at this shop, from the phone call to the in store service. Everyone was very helpful. I attempted to do the online reservation a night before, but for some reason the calendar had the next day blocked off already. If you are able to reserve online, they honor a 20% discount. I was concerned that they were out of rentals, but when I called in the morning, the gentlemen kindly reassured me that they had everything, and they did. In store they were pleasant with my little kids, my husband and me. I didn't feel rushed or that feeling of annoyance that sometimes comes with hauling around little kids. The store is a good size and very organized. There is space to move around. The gear is pretty much new and good quality if you aren't ready to invest in your own gear. We needed to rent wrist guards, so the guy just pulled new ones off the rack. Unfortunately for us adults, we never got to snowboard because we were busy tending to the kids snow activity. We kept our gear an additional night when we were still hopeful. When we returned it the following morning unused, the gentleman who was checking us out assured us that while we SHOULD have paid for additional day, he would let us go without additional charges. That was just a nice experience of "spirit vs. letter of the law", aka customer service. He even mentioned driving down to the beach and enjoying the hot weather. Won't be renting from here again. Prices were great, but not worth the customer service. It was our first time skiing, and when we got to our lessons our bindings were completely off. It's not that it was tight, or slightly off, my boots literally wouldn't fit. My wife's had similar issues. Thankfully the instructor took our skis to mammoths rental shop and had them adjusted. The instructor did tell us that they have been having the same type of problem with this rental location. When I returned the equipment to skirenter and explained what happened to the guy at the front desk (the one who had fitted us), he told me that I had grabbed the wrong pair of skis like it was somehow our fault. A simple I'm sorry that happened to you guys, I'll make sure to double check next time would have sufficed. The equipment it self was in great shape (as far as we could tell with our limited knowledge) and we had a blast skiing. This place just isn't worth any repeat business with that attitude. Why give your business to a place that doesn't even want it? We came here as the prices were a little lower than the other local places, however the service and wait time wasn't worth it. We came in at a non-peak time and even had prepaid reservations, yet still had wait around half an hour even to be acknowledged. With only two other families in the shop, it came to the point where we were fitting ourselves and determining our own boot sizes. When we were finally helped, the worker was sarcastic and unmotivated. The equipment: we rented two pairs of skis and two snowboards. Overall, the snowboards were average and held up for decently advanced riders, yet the skis on the other hand were a different story. Coming from people who have been skiing since childhood and are advanced, these skis could not keep up. If you are planning on riding advanced runs, I would highly consider upgrading to the sport package for an additional cost. Otherwise, plan on dealing with squirrelly skis that are unable to handle Mammoth's powder. All in all, this place can get packed fast and is an okay rental spot that needs improvement mostly in customer service. read more
