This is where I have purchased tackle on most of my trips to Mammoth over the past 30 years. I called to ask where would be good to fish on a pontoon boat in the Mammoth/June area. The guy was extremely short with me and said "Lake Mary, go to Pokonobe Marina for boat rental." I asked how that compares to June lake and he rudely said "I told you where I would go." I said ok, thanks and hung up. The guy on the phone was the owner...he found it necessary to announce that I suppose. Frankly I'd be embarrassed to say I'm the owner (Rick?) while being obnoxious and rude to a customer. Feeling verbally assaulted on the call I decided to try calling another local shop. Guess what, super nice guy that took a few minutes to chat with me and offered multiple options and about the fish report. Totally different conversation. I felt like a valued person and customer. I went to the second shop and spent over $250. I also disregarded "Rick's" advice after reading many poor reviews about Pokonobe Marina boat rentals. Chose a totally different option mentioned by the second shop and was completely satisfied. I'm sure this will not change "Rick" but it may help Yelpers be aware of better options where they'll be treated with respect. I live by the no @&shole rule and it paid off here. read more

Brian was super helpful with information about what colors and other baits were currently working, what techniques to use and locations to fish. They have a good selection of fishing gear and baits and lures at standard or better prices. I'll definitely go there when I'm looking for fishing gear in Mammoth Lakes. read more

Have you ever come to Mammoth to fish, and never caught anything? Well, I can't guarantee anything, but it seems every time I come here for my bait, I catch fish. I don't know whether it's the advice, products, or just plain routine I follow, but like magic, it happens, and I'm not complaining about it! For newer fisherpeople, try the scented goop from Berkeley, and also single hooks with sparkly marshmallow bait sinkers for bottom dwellers. sink those baits with a long leader, and then just wait until the scent travels throughout the lake. After you've caught your limit, come back and weigh your trout in front, and take some pictures for the wall. You and the family will have a great time with memories, and a nice fish dinner back home at the condo. read more

Rewriting this review since I couldn't fix the spelling error I made in the previous one :). I stopped here in 2018 for a week of snow in Mammoth. Usually use the ski resort for rentals, but I thought we'd try somewhere on the way in. It was quiet on a Monday afternoon, and we were in and out quickly with our rentals of snowboards, skis, and boots. Equipment was good, and we had a great time on the mountain. Returning the rentals was easy; we had a mishap with one set of boots (our fault, not theirs), but they were able to help us resolve the issue to both parties satisfaction. I went in with my wife and 2 boys. We walked about 3 steps when my 11 year old walked over to the rods. Rick said, "If you lift the rod and hit the ceiling and break the rod, you will buy it...and it's $295" After that, my son didn't want to ask any questions. My wife and I asked basic questions about where to fish, what the fish will bite etc. Every question was met with either a sarcastic answer or very clipped smug answer. Rick also had to let us know that he was the owner and he has been doing this for nearly 3 decades. After 30 years I would think that a person would know how to deal with customers, but you know what happens when you assume, huh? I will never go there again and I will make it a point to dissuade anyone else from going. We went to Troutfitters and were treated with respect and enthusiasm. We went back to Troutfitters 3 times during the week and my son ended up getting a $300 fly rod...and he didn't have to break it first. read more

My wife, two boys and I went skiing and snowboarding in January 2023. Our boys already had their snowboard gear but my wife and I rented our ski gear from Rick's. Came here to get tackle, as a total newbie. I told the employee we already had fishing poles , but very little idea of how to get set up. He gave us a few different options, and in like 10 minutes we were set! They have a handy little guide that shows you how to set up your lines in case you're not sure either. Yes the licenses were a bit more then I expected, but in terms of tackle, I expected to get set up with way too many things, that costed way too much, but they kept it all reasonable here. :) The guy who seems to know all the spots here is a blonde guy, though I didn't catch his name. Any detailed questions were always routed to him. Wish us luck today now! Hopefully we'll catch some fish! read more

Woo hoo ! A ski rental place that is cheaper than renting locally or Mammoth ski lodge. $18 for a day of rental, $16 for the next day, $14 for the day after, $12 for the fourth day! Yes - a real set of beginner skis perfect for those that want to try out skiing and not pay thru the nose! Very friendly folks, helpful and down home! Since it was snowing like crazy, I had to get a pair of ski goggles but I also wear prescription glasses. No problem - they had a pair of Smith OTG (Over the glasses) ski goggles that fit perfect and skied with ease. These wonderful goggles kept my eyes from freezing and allowed me to see in the distance with my glasses on too ! A side note: they are known for their summer fishing gear and only do the ski rentals as a side business so that explains why their prices are so low! read more

Walked in with my dog and was immediately yelled at to get out by a chubby white man in a lounge chair on his laptop because someone else's dog was barking at my dog and his owner didn't want both our dogs in the store at the same time.
