I'd been interested in the latest version of Black Diamond's Beta Light ultralight tents. I've been hunting around and had not found any sporting goods stores that had it in stock. Bought my back country boots here! The first time I arrived here I was excited about all the supplies in the store. It ranges from hiking & mountaineering gear, backpacking gear, poles and back country skies. I was looking forward to purchasing my first back country boots but the staff was preoccupied and there were a lot of moving large pieces in the shop. I ended up leaving and decided to look for a different store. I went to Footloose the next day because of the great reviews. The staff was super helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, they didn't have the selection of backcountry gear that I saw at Mammoth Mountaineering. I returned back to Mammoth Mountaineering knowing exactly which boots I wanted. I was able to call someone over and they were able to provide the boots that I wanted to try on. If you're coming to this store, it would be beneficial to do the research in advance and know exactly what you want. Otherwise, it's pretty difficult to ask questions and get help into what you're looking for. Overall, 4 stars because of the great supplies but -1 star for the lack of support. read more

I'm so thankful for this store. Last year I rented AT skis and boots and they were very helpful. This year, I was back in town with some older tele gear I'd bought on eBay. One of the boots was hurting my ankle so much I could barely ski in it. I took it to the shop and JZ checked it out and showed me where the plastic needed to be punched out. But he cautioned me that the old plastic would probably "explode." I said it's worth the risk- otherwise I can't use them! "Please- I won't care if the boot gets destroyed." I've bought climbing shoes for me, climbing shoes for my kids, backpacking gear, climbing rope, accessory cord, climbing hardware, harnesses, and some clothes here. Also splitboard gear (Spark R&D!) and AT setups. It's a terrific asset to Mammoth Lakes, and the selection is really pretty baller. The hours are solid. With 8-8 hours you can get in there early before you start your day or get in after being outside. Another thing to point out is that Mammoth Mountaineering is a real asset to the Eastern Sierra. They put monetary and equipment support towards Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center, Mono Search & Rescue, and rebolting routes in the area. Just a solid, solid shop. read more

If you are in the market for mountaineering gear, this is a the best store you'll encounter. Certainly the best in mammoth, and in my case, the best I've come across anywhere. They carry just the right amount of inventory across a wide range of backcountry activities. The brands they carry are on the high end of the spectrum, and they had everything I needed immediately on hand. I have had reason to make two fulsome shops in the recent past - one purchase for a skimo racing set up, and one for a new touring set up. In each instance, I relied heavily on the store staff for guidance, and each case I was given advice that, in retrospect, was right on the money. The entire staff is expert in their knowledge, but not the least bit intimidating or condescending, when it came to explaining things that were well outside of my knowledge base. Further, i never once felt I was being upsold, a personal pet peeve. I would recommend this place to anyone who is seeking the sort of gear and advice in which they specialize. read more

They said they couldn't do anything about it and told me to go to the Dynafit webpage. The bros were total douches and couldn't have cared less. Obviously they just wanted to go home. This store is a bit out of the way compared to most others so you'd think all staff would try a bit harder. I went in mid morning and was greeted by a younger guy but when I went upstairs, the young woman seemed to resent being there. She didn't smile or say hello and wasn't friendly. A family came in after me and she came up behind me while I was looking at boots. She said, "some sizes aren't available." Thinking she was talking to me, I replied that I understood it was late in the season. Turning around, I realized she was speaking to one of the family members, not me. Instead of making light of the mistake, she stood there with a scowl on her face and just stared at me. I understand there is a shortage of employees but it was a drag to be in there and I left soon after. We have purchased before from this store but after this, we will not be back. There are plenty of other sporting goods stores in town with friendly, helpful staff. read more

This is the worst mountaineering shop I have ever been to in my life. Prices are ridiculously high. The staff have an annoying passive aggressive elitist attitude. From the moment I walked in "the vibe" was set. I came in for the simplest ask ever, to have my Black Diamond skins cut to fit my Faction CT 3.0 skis. Easy right? Nope. The mountain bro checking me out gave me a hard time about my specification on the skin cut. He was really offended and didn't take it well. He responded with "we cut skins a certain way..." So I said ok cool, I trust you guys, leave some edge on the ski.. please do you thing. I was very polite. Upon picking up the skins the next day I realized the toe piece was not mounted correctly... no big deal. I brought the skins back in, was very reasonable. I encounter a guy named John who has a really interesting haircut... John would not admit the mistake. He basically told me "it still works doesn't it?" John also noted that they cut the skin "the way I wanted it cut." And he proceeded to give me a hard time about it. In other words the shop didn't do what they agreed to do (cut it their way) and instead mounted and cut it wrong/ and then gave me a hard time about it! (Absolutely insane) John then pulled me aside and basically told me that my request was unreasonable. But he was not up front or professional about it. In fact John wins the gold medal at the passive aggressive olympics for bro elitist mountain shop sales associates. Congratulations John. To top it all off, just when things couldn't get any more awkward.. I was cornered at the same time by another shop worker who most likely mounted these skins wrong. Both John and this gentlemen told me... " we have never heard of anyone wanting to cover the edge with their ski.. with the skin.. unless I guess you just want to go ride powder with your friends" What kind of touring do you guys do?? Long story short, this shop has a terrible attitude. And I know I'm not the first person to deal with this, judging by other yelp reviews. Today I was skiing from the top of the gondola on Mammoth Mountain and saw a group climbing up the mountain on their skis! I was fascinated and they answered many questions (great group of people - very friendly). They sent me to Mammoth Mountaineering where we met Sam. He spent so much time and gave us the complete class on backcountry skiing and the equipment used. Fascinating and so interesting. We plan on going back to rent some equipment and take a class to learn more (Mammoth Mountain and several other places have 1 Day lessons). AT skiing is the future! read more

This place is AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! They have another store called "gear exchange." This is where my husband and I have spent quite a bit of time. It's a nature explorer/hiker/rock climber/camper's paradise. From a crash pad for bouldering to hiking boots, they have it all in both used and new options. Did I mention that this place functions as a semi-consignment store too?! You can get great bargains on gently used gear (i.e., I scored a rock climbing harness for only $10). Ladies, they also have two racks of onzie brand yoga shorts, capri, and tops which are priced to move. I scored yoga shorts for $20 which are priced at $35 online at the onzie website!
