Absolute gem of a shop. We went in during a day trip to the area and I had such a lovely and wonderful conversation about spices with the shop owner, Anne. She was so very knowledgeable and friendly and took a huge amount of time to explain the origin of where they get their spices and also how to use them in a lot of ways. I ended up buying multiple packages of the recipe kits for some of the Indian recipes so that I can try some of the seasonings that I'm not familiar with prior to buying. I wish that it was closer, but anytime I'm in the area. I will be headed back that way for more knowledgeable conversation from a fellow foodie... Oh yeah, and to re-supply! read more

I stopped in Skordo after passing it a few times during my weekend visit to Portland. We were welcomed by the 2 owners (I think) and they were super friendly and helpful as I'm working with my boyfriend on his cooking skills (or lack thereof) . We settled on 4 small spices and one of the recipe packs. They wrapped our spices up nicely so they could be packed in our suitcases and travel well. We are so excited scored to try out the new additions to our spice cabinet. They also shared they have shipping and an online store. If you're in the area stop into this small business they have something for everyone. read more

I absolutely LOVE this shop! They were my first stop last week on the night of "Merry Madness" and I loved them so much, I also visited their shop in the Maine Mall within the same week! Why, you might ask? Because they have the most lovely, well thought out, high quality collection of spices, rubs, salts and syrups any home cook could ask for. My first walk through felt like I was walking through a dream. I've already tried both the Hawaiian black salt (straight up on scrambled eggs), and the bourbon infused salt (on a brown butter topped cornbread square), and they were both SO good, that I went right back and bought more for holiday gifts! 100% check this place out! read more

Can a spice store stay open in the Old Port with the crazy city real estate prices these days? I ask myself that every time I visit or walk by Skordo, but I really hope the answer is yes. I do my best to spread the word because if you like to cook, or even if you're shopping for someone who likes to cook, this place is a godsend. Looking for actual curry leaves, not just powder? Check. Kaffir lime leaves? Check. I've bought a piri piri powder, green curry powder, vindaloo spice mix, a Vietnamese spice blend, an Italian herb blend that when mixed with some good olive oil was fantastic for dipping. Tons of other spices I've never heard of as well. The staff knows their stuff and they have all available as samples to smell or taste. They also have a lot pre-mixed spice blends that are great for grilling and little 4-pack "collections" of spice blends that make fantastic gifts. Also a small collection of some cook books. I don't think the prices are that bad at all, and even if they do end up being a bit more than you'll spend at a big box grocery store, the quality and flavor of what they have here, even for just something like cumin, is on another level in my experience. There are likely some ethnic grocery stores around town where if you hopped around you could find some of these things a bit cheaper, but as someone who works downtown, being able to pop into Skordo and get everything I need (and things I didn't know I needed) has been wonderful. read more

This shop is so lovely! I bought a pack of spices and a few individuals last month and I've already been using them all. They're DELICIOUS (especially the blueberry pork rub). I really appreciated my experience in the store. I'm vaccinated, but prefer to keep my mask on indoors. The shopkeeper made a point of quietly putting her mask on any time she came over to me and I was touched by her thoughtful gesture. Can't recommend this place highly enough! What a fantastic little shop! We stumbled along this store while we were waiting for the Holy Donut. The staff was so kind and helpful, and the rubs they make in-house are delicious. Compared to other specialty food stores, I felt their prices were very fair (the small jars last a long time!). Highly recommend the maple salmon rub or the mocha steak rub. Since going into their store, I have also ordered a few of their gift sets online. Shipping is always prompt - and their packaging is perfect for presents! Literally one of the best, hippest, 'tastiest' shops in downtown Portland. This is probably New England's preeminent spice company. The staff is super knowledgeable, and the physical store absolutely gorgeous. All locally made, they have an almost unlimited selection of dried herbs and spices, and everything available would make a gift perfect! Popped into this delightful store on a whim and had to resist strong urge to take home every kitchen item, every spice mix, and every book. The woman at the counter was very friendly and helpful. We tasted the infused maple syrups which were to die for. Sadly and unbelievably we were on a time crunch and searching for a different kind of gift so we didn't buy anything and now I will regret it for the rest of my days or until I can get back to Maine again Must see for any foodie. read more

Skordo was such a great find! We stumbled upon it on our first day in Portland. The store is very quaint and has SO many herbs and spices to choose from. We chatted with one of the workers (Christina) for quite some time. She was extremely knowledgeable about the shop and provided many recommendations based on what we were looking for. Not only did she help us with our dry rub selections, but also provided directions and recommended many restaurants during our stay in Maine. So far we have loved all of the spices we purchased, especially the Maple Salmon Rub, Mocha Steak Rub, and the Skordo Rub. This shop was such a find. It had the most amazing salts, with all different flavors. The seasonings and spices were from all over the world, and delicious. A++++ service! Seriously, the guy we talked to was so personable, fun, and very knowledgeable about the products. He let us try a bunch of samples so we could figure out what we wanted. The hardest part was narrowing down my choices because everything is so good! The spices are all fresh and high quality, and they have the best truffle salt I've ever had (most truffle salt just tastes like mushroom farts, this actually tasted like good quality truffles!). The vanilla cinnamon maple syrup was amazing, and the smoked salts all had a perfect smoke flavor. But by far my favorite is the blueberry pork rub. A perfect place for shop for anyone who likes cooking or grilling. read more

We tried the blueberry pork rub on some pork chops and it was delicious. Super simple just hit the chops with some salt and pepper rubbed in the rub, let it sit for 5 minute then right on the grill, so easy and tasty. I'm excited to try the Vietnamese pork rub next. read more
