This was a cute place. It's a narrow building. If you enter from the street entrance you will find a bit of retail items, food items for sale, and a few places to sit to eat. I was thrilled at the chop stick holders and the sauces that were available. Local and foreign. If you keep walking through, there are stairs and you can go up to where they make and sell some pastries and matcha, and I believe coffee. I came for the treats. I grabbed a scallion miso scone with a chili smear on top. It was nice, the texture was good. The flavors weren't as strong as I had hoped for, but texture carried the weight. We only stopped by for the pastries and didn't try their drinks. The service was normal for the cafe area; can't say too much about it. The miso scallion scone was S++ tier, very good. The kimchi cheddar corn soufflé was also very good but not as good as the scone so would give it S tier. The matcha and black sesame butter mochi tasted very good but I think I still prefer the more savory options so would give it an A+ tier. The texture reminds me of Malaysian kuih and flavor was good. The service with the grocery mart area was friendly and helpful for asking questions. We got a fancy soy sauce here to sushi later and it was pretty good. Okay I know nothing about fermentation but this cafe has really interesting and delicious baked goods that you won't find anywhere else like a sourdough chocolate chip cookie and a kimchi corn cheese soufflé. Also the matcha black sesame butter mochi was out of this world, truly unexpected. Great food and very good service. There was outdoor seating outside and the inside had plenty of room though the cafe was pretty busy when we arrived. Definitely worth checking out! read more

The cafe/bakery has a few fresh baked goods daily (don't think any vegan or no gluten-free options). Their website lists about a half dozen, but the last time I was here there were just two: the sourdough chocolate chip cookie and the matcha and black sesame butter mochi. I'm guessing those are regularly available (they also do fun seasonal specials, so be sure to check their socials), but don't come with the expectation that there's going to be a big variety. The drinks include coffees, teas, and a variety of matcha. For me, this is NOT the best matcha in Portland. Matcha Mood is. The matcha here is good (maybe in the top three in the city), but the iced matcha with miso maple syrup and almond milk I recently had for $9+ was just okay. The drink is (literally) half the size as one at Macha Mood for the same price, and there wasn't any flavor of miso or maple. I've seen some internet buzz claiming THIS IS THE BEST... as a local, I don't agree. And that's okay; you might find your new favorite here, so it's absolutely worth visiting. We dropped by Onggi for coffee in the morning. When you first walk in, it appears to be a small store with different products (fermentation starters, tea, condiments, nuts, cooking vessels, etc). When you pass the counter, you will see a sign to walk up to the cafe area. It is relatively small with just enough space for a small line of people to order. Luckily, there were two tables in the lower level. I ordered a hojicha latte with oat milk (I don't think they charge extra for plant based milk), and my boyfriend ordered a coffee. The hojicha latte was yummy and had a creamy texture. It had a toasty and sweet flavor. Sort of had notes of cereal? My boyfriend said his coffee was just alright and that he preferred my drink. I've bopped around some cities, and this is the first fermentation market + cafe + bakery I've encountered. I'm *so glad* I did! The Asian-inspired cafe + bakery is in the back half of the shop. The drink menu consists of matcha, hojicha, and coffee-based drinks with cold foams for an additional charge. I was really pleased with my mango + coconut matcha, a seasonal drink. There are also baked goods--cookies, mochi cake, and a corn + cheese soufflé. I strongly advise ordering the soufflé. Hell, you might need two. The mochi cake is also super tasty. The cookies? They're good, but they don't trump the soufflé and mochi cake. The fermentation market is in the front half of the shop, and boy, there are really fun offerings. I was bummed I had carry-on luggage, or else I would have picked up some chili crisps. My sister spent more money than she would have liked, but we both agreed it was worth it. I'd argue that many of the items in the store aren't in your typical grocery store. Do check this place out if you're in Portland. This little shop in Portland is giving me Kinfolk magazine vibes. It felt so peaceful when I walked in, a space made with intention. The market side had a very well curated selection of Asian dry goods, drinks, snacks, and handmade ceramics. I picked up a bag of sour blackberry fish made by a Swedish company that caught my eye, they were basically elevated Swedish fish combined with a sour patch kid. They nailed the Swedish fish consistency! The cafe in the back was serving up delicious, unique drinks. I got the hojicha latte, which was nutty and lightly sweet. They also made the black sesame foam hojicha hot for us which was needed for the cold weather. I was warned the foam would just melt into the drink but that wasn't a deal breaker for me. The black sesame flavor was very strong, not subtle in a good way. The barista came over and handed me my drinks while I was perusing the market side. I always appreciate when people take that extra step for service! Their baked goods all look soooo tasty - they all had an Asian note to them. The hojicha butterscotch oat cookie was nice and chewy, and not too sweet (the ultimate Asian compliment!). Adorable and fun shop that highlights asian culture and the art of fermentation. The staff was friendly. They were pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon. This is a cute specialty store on Washington Ave that sells a ton of fermentation products (many of them Asian) and also has a bakery and coffee shop in the back. I haven't yet purchased any of their store products, so this is a review of the bakery and coffee shop. Everything on the menu looked absolutely delicious, and it was tough for me to decide what to order. I ended up getting a sourdough chocolate chip cookie, hojicha butterscotch oat cookie, strawberry milk matcha with oat milk, and hojicha latte. The total came out to about $22, which isn't cheap, but all the menu items here seem thoughtfully sourced and created. I found the cookies disappointing, which was a huge bummer, given the flavor profile and the cost. The chocolate chip cookie was small and quite thin, and was crispy without any chew. (I also couldn't taste the sourdough, so maybe I got a bad batch?) The oat cookie was also just OK - it didn't have a very distinctive taste, either. The service was prompt, though, and the drinks were standout. I'm super picky about my matcha and my hojicha, but both were brewed to perfection. The matcha was delicious with the oat milk and strawberry, and the hojicha lovely and toasty. I'll definitely be back for the beverages, and perhaps one of those miso scallion scones! read more

no parking and no street parking so your best bet is probably parking at forage despite being instructed not to. location is very cute, the building is sweet and also painted a shade of matcha green which was whimsical and ironic and fun. the door enters into a little shop that sells some basic artisan jams and such. the actual bakery is up the stairs behind that. matcha latte was yummy but also my order was 10$ and beware the drinks are very small if you're hoping for hydration in a hot month. there are two window booth seats facing the west end which is kind of cute but both seat maybe 2 people and are never not taken up by remote workers on latops. it's a cute spot but it's not really somewhere to hang out and the odd layout makes it so there's not really anywhere to stand or sit during or after ordering. the barista however this morning was the friendliest prettiest coolest girl so props to her. read more

I found an excellent high-end chili crisp that I've generously doused on breakfast items. There are unique cookbooks highlighting Asian cuisine (Hello, Gohan by Emiko Davies!) all the way to Slow Drinks by Danny Childs. Up the stairs and in the back is a chic and aesthetic cafe. I was able to enjoy the last day of a pumpkin-maple cold foam cold brew along with a miso scallion butter scone. I visited this adorable shop in August. My friend and I had been searching for a blueberry matcha drink (every time we've tried to get one at a local coffee shop in Boston, it's been sold out). What better place to try a blueberry product than Maine? The workers at the shop were super friendly and told us they were doing a pop-up blueberry drink the weekend we were there! Onggi has been on my mind as somewhere to stop by for quite a while - and I finally stopped by the other day and was delighted. I'll be clear, this is a niche place. A small market based on selling fermentation goods and Asian fare, with a few drinks and snacks. It's unlike anywhere I've visited before. The uniqueness of Onggi is what made it so fun to visit. I came on a Saturday after a walk with my mom, it was relatively quiet. We had iced Hojicha which was recommended to us by the kind and chatty barista. We shared a congee. I'd been interested in trying congee for a while, and this was so fun! There is a little toppings bar where you can add different chili oils or other toppings that they sell in store in case you love it so much you want to purchase. We sat by the windows and had our delicious drinks - seriously, I've never tried hojicha but the barista joked that once you try "hoji" you never go back, and it was so good. The kind of drink I know I'll crave again. Same goes for the congee. It's a little magical in here. I don't know what it is, but it's delightful. Quiet, calm, and different. I was walking down the street and saw such an instagrammable shop. I walk in and discover it's a fermentation shop, also selling cookies and drinks! I love how this small business supports small businesses, providing an amazing selection of different condiments, books, and of course fermented goods. I bought so much stuff, hopefully my luggage won't go over the weight limit with all the stuff I've bought. All the items are perfect for gifts and souvenirs as well. I've been visiting Onggi since they've opened and was even there the first day they opened their cafe in the back of the store. For however many years it's been, the food on their cafe menu has stayed the *exact* same 5 or so items every single time I stop by. I would put Onggi as a "must visit" any time I am in Portland Maine and would recommend the same for anyone visiting the area! They have an amazing selection of sauces and foods. While they are extremely knowledgeable in fermented goods / sauces, their knowledge does not stop there! They are great bakers, chefs, and overall fantastic people to meet. We ended up getting some Matcha Chocolate, Dried Pineapple, Roasted strawberry shrub soda, Butter Mochi, Heirloom Tomato vinegar, and Mushroom Ale vinegar. All really rich and complex flavors and well made. Highly recommend trying the foods and drinks they make as it will be made with care and taste great! Their Roasted strawberry shrub soda is delicious, a sweet taste with a bright tang. The Butter Mochi was one of the best I've had. It had great texture with a soft bite inside reminding me of 年糕 and a crumbly top. It was a delicious taste of matcha while not being too sweet or too bitter. If you're interested in fermenting or starting it as a hobby, this is the place to start, regardless of Whether or not you're in Maine (As they ship some of their items online). Truly some of the nicest folks you'll ever meet in Portland. If you're remotely interested in fermented foods -- from kimchi to sourdough or anything else in between -- you gotta visit Onggi. Located in what seems to be the smallest yet cutest store, Onggi is such an amazing addition to Portland's food scene. The people working here are incredibly passionate about the products they source in their store. I usually learn a thing or two by just browsing and talking to the staff.
