We randomly found this café on the road, and honestly, it completely surprised us. First of all, the mountain views are beautiful, the interior is bright, clean, and really cozy. But the food was the biggest surprise. Everything we ordered was packed with flavor, juicy, fresh, and genuinely delicious. This is not one of those roadside places where you eat just because you're starving and there's nothing else around. This is actually a spot worth stopping for specifically because of the food. Fast service, gorgeous patio seating with birds constantly flying around, and an incredible mountain view. And the double chocolate cake... exactly the kind of taste you hope for when you order chocolate cake. Not overly sweet, which made it even better. Honestly, shockingly good. Good restaurant off the main path. Menu has really good options. From sandwiches, burgers, pizza, wings, gyro, salads. A good variety of items. Restaurant has a full bar and even has its package license to sell alcohol for purchase. They maintain a good selection of alcohol. Plenty of seating within the restaurant and patio seating is also present. The restaurant has plenty of entertainment with TVs, card and board games. Stopped in for some supplies and lunch. We had chicken wings and chocolate cake. They have an assortment of snacks and drinks. The juice I bought was on the pricier side but it is kind of the only store around for a hot minute. They also sell beer wine and liquor. I'm a city girl and would not have expected such good food " out in the middle of nowhere". But I had just about the best Cobb salad I've ever had in this little place. There was a list of bottled beers that had about any kind of bottled beer a person would want, including some imports. The tiny grocery store had every thing you could imagine ever having forgotten to bring along. Probably not worth making a detour from the interstate, but definitely worth checking into if you're in the area. Service was cheerful and efficient, ambience was clean and pleasant. read more

Excellent food and quaint atmosphere. Service was great. I had to try their chili to begin with. Being a Texan, this didn't pass as chili, but was more of a three bean soup. But none the less, it was absolutely delicious. And I'll be back for more before we leave the area. I also had fish & chips, and they were pretty darn good. If you've spent time in Portal, AZ, you know there aren't a whole lot of options for dining out in the area. But the Sky Islands Grill isn't "good considering the limited choices" -- it's just good! I ate dinner there with a group during a weekend trip to hike in the Chiricahua Mountains. The restaurant itself is very bright and airy, with high ceilings and big windows through which you get lovely views of the mountains. Two of us got grilled chicken sandwiches, one person got a garden burger, and one got a black bean burger. All the sandwiches/burgers are customizable, so I got grilled chicken with an Asian sweet chili sauce, sauteed jalapeños, avocado, pepper jack cheese, and the usual lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles. Everyone added their favorite elements, and we all got a combination of onion rings and fries as our side. The menu is pretty straightforward: salads, sandwiches and burgers, and pizza. Within that, there's a lot of room for customization, though, so you're able to build a meal that you're sure to enjoy! Sky Islands also has a well-stocked grocery store, so I recommend heading there to pick up supplies if you're camping and need to get snacks or something. One very important thing to keep in mind: this restaurant/market is right on the New Mexico-Arizona state line, so depending on where you're coming from, you may need mentally shift the hours to account for the time change. read more

I was sad today. I work around the area and was wanting to grab a sandwich and fries. There was a blonde short haired lady that was helping the customers in that dining area. She walked back-and-forth on each side of the bar area never even looked towards the front or the register to see if anybody was waiting to pay or standing there to order. It was almost up to 10 minutes that I had been waiting, patiently. As I was going to change my mind, A younger girl with long brunette here asked if she can take my order. I said well I have been standing here for at least 5 minutes and no one had acknowledged me. Even one of the cooks in the back, he was wearing all black, saw that I was standing there at the front and did not even acknowledge me or inform anybody that I was waiting at the front to be helped. I was going to order but I lost my appetite and pulled the young lady that's OK forget it and walked away pretty sad. Whenever I would go in there and I believe he is the owner, middle aged man with short hair, he acknowledges customers right away. I believe everybody, even though they don't handle the front responsibilities, shouldn knowledge customers and then let someone that does work the front know that there's a customer at the register and then pick it up here waiting to order or that needs to be helped. Now I will have to wait till I get home to eat, which will be after 10pm. I went in around 545pm. read more

Seeing all the other positive reviews, I couldn't wait to come to Sky Islands. Unfortunately however, my experience did not match the remainder of the respondents. While the grocery is the better of the area (that being the groceries of Rodeo Cafe, Animus Fuel, Portal Cafe, Sky Islands,) the grill was a significant disappointment. I came for lunch, and had the appetizer of the loaded tater tots, and an order of BBQ wings. While the tater tots themselves were cooked well, the "loaded" was a sprinkling of grated cheddar, a raw onion, and cold bacon bits sprinkled atop. Nothing held together. Not even the cheese on the tater tots - not melted; just fell off and littered the basket, along with the onion and bacon bits. Eating it, searching for flavors, one had to pick up individual components and gather them together. The wings could have been fabulous; except they were pre-cooked, and microwaved at order time. What I received in the basket were wings that were warm atop, and refrigerator cold below. The cold sections actually were juicier than the nuked; which were touch and chewy as a result of the reheat. Sky Islands Management -- the wait staff was impeccable, and served up with a smile; but the order cook the day I was there just didn't seem to care; there was no effort or delight in the preparation or delivery. Go down to the Portal cafe some afternoon and order a lunch there -- the attention to detail in the order and delivery there is phenominal; and Sky Islands could be so much more. read more

Great find in this little town of nothing. This restaurant has some great food, not just for the area but in general. I ordered the chicken quesadilla with tator tots and husband ordered club sandwich with fries and we shared a basket of onion rings. My quesadilla was A LOT better than one I just had in Scottsdale AZ at a place that touted themselves as truly Mexican fare. The club sandwich was so filling my husband took half home. It is nice to have a spot in the desert to grab a few groceries or a bite when you don't feel like cooking. While I would like for there to be a late night bar or pub in the area, this is still a nice eatery with a good environment. If I had one complaint it would be that they don't manage the grocery portion of front of house all that well. I've been in there a dozen times and had to wait 10 minutes or more to even get acknowledged...on days where no one was eating. But besides that the staff and owners are always kind people, and they have a good stock of ice cream which keeps my Grandma happy. read more

My first Yelp review. This place was so terrific I told them I would write a 5 star review and I meant it! The service was prompt and friendly/ The food is SO GOOD. We ate at least one meal here every day of the 6 days we were hunting/camping in the Chiricahua mountains. Every meal we ordered was delicious. Chicken quesadilla, breakfast burrito, chili, soup, hamburger and salads. But the best item was their Sweet Potato French Fries. I have never had sweet potato fries this good. We stopped for a basket to take with us for the ride back home to Tucson! If you're in the area. great place for food and they have a decent selection of food, drink and assorted sundries. read more

Wow!!!!! What an awesome treat. Out of the way but worth the drive. My wife and I went for a drive from Tucson and wound up in Rodeo, NM. When we got there I was starved and we found the Sky Islands Grill and Grocery.. We were very impressed when we went in to find a beautifully rustic design with the most spectacular views of the Chiricahua Mountains. Oh yeah.... and the food!!! I ordered the special of the day which was Coconut Shrimp with a side of slaw and onion rings and my wife ordered a bbq burger. First the shrimp.... Every bit as good as Outback Steak House ( and that's high praise cuz I LOVE Outback Steak House) Good size, right amount of crusted coconut and a delicious sweet dipping sauce. YUM!! My wife had been craving a great burger as she had been disappointed the last couple of times she ordered one. This burger did NOT disappoint! It was tasty and above all, juicy. And for dessert I ordered the Bourbon bread pudding and dang it was good. And huge as e=well, just the way I like it. The servers were sooo friendly as well as the owners who made sure to come out and check on how we liked our meal. I know not everyone who lives in Tucson will drive 2 1/2 hours for a meal, but if anyone is EVER in those parts, do not miss this place. read more
