Located near the 18th & Vine Jazz District, the center is the result of a stunning $26 million transformation of the former Crispus Attucks School. Before the program began, Izzy Vivas, Director of Sales at the Zhou B Art Center, welcomed us and shared an overview of the center's mission and rebirth. Like many other attendees, I walked in not knowing anything about the space. By the time Izzy finished, it was clear that this isn't just a renovation--it's a full-scale cultural revitalization. The building houses several dozen artist studios spread across two floors, and a number of them opened their doors after the event so guests could explore the work. It was a great mix--painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media--and the artists were friendly, passionate, and eager to share their stories. The atmosphere felt both professional and welcoming. I hope more Kansas Citians take the time to experience the Zhou B Art Center, especially during First Fridays. It's an impressive space with a lot of creative energy, and it deserves to become a regular stop for anyone who cares about local art.

I hired Richard Brown from Radius Deck and Fence to restore and restain our deck at the beginning…read moreof June. He seemed like an honest, trustworthy man who was recommended by a neighbor. Don't be fooled! We contracted to have the deck power washed. He did that. Next he was to replace the rotten wood, sand and prep the deck. Did none of that. He skipped right to the staining. The contract said to hand brush the railings. The railings are a combination of wood and metal. Instead, he opted to spray them. That was mistake number one. Once he realized the stain was going all over the rails, he asked me if he could go ahead and paint the metal rails white like the wood. I told him no, that is not what I had wanted and was, in fact, the very reason I hired this job out, because I didn't want to do this myself. This was the second time we discussed this. So he decided to tape the tops and bottoms of the metal rails and continue spraying. Needless to say, the spray went everywhere, on the metal rails, on the deck floor. Once it got to around 6:00, he decided he was done for the day. He asked me to pay him for this day and that he would be back to finish the job. I don't have a habit of paying workers until they are done, but up to this point he had shown up when he said he would and I just thought the job was halfway done, so I could pay him safely. Really dumb on my part. Now he doesn't answer my calls or texts. And of course, he's never shown back up at my house. He did send a worker out a couple days later to clean up some of the overspray and they used a product that left big spots all over the deck floor. I am just about done completing his job myself. I am talking about 50 hours spent hand scraping the stain droppings and restaining the whole thing. It would have been far less time consuming on my part if I had just done the job myself to begin with, not to mention the money I would have saved. He also owns or works for Heartland Electric. I would be very cautious about using them also if this is the way he operates his businesses.
