Every parent wants that school that feels like home, like their child is valued and seen, and where they are respected as parents - that's this school. My son (now 5) has a lot of energy, and a speech delay. The prior Montessori school he was at labeled him as "too much" and told me he needed to be in a "dedicated special education program". We got to DGM with Ms. Tessa (Primary), and wow she's an absolute unicorn of a teacher! She teaches emotional regulation in her classroom, her room full of 26 kids listen to her with ease. My son is so loved in her class and he has grown so much (in just 1 school year)! She's not a special education teacher she just knows how to teach with mindfulness, care, and the utmost attention. I wish all families could experience a school like DGM and a teacher like Ms.Tessa. Even the teaching assistants & school staff are so loving & kind. If your family is interested I 20/10 recommend. If money is holding you back, speak to the school about scholarships and aid, the school Director is amazing, she will make time to talk to your family personally. My daughter was physically abused by her assistant teacher in this private school "Desert Garden Montessori." It was during lunch time that my daughter was feeding water to her best friend. Mrs. Kristen, the assistant teacher, sees her goes over to her, pulls her hard by her arm and places her close to her face and says "Stop doing that she's not a baby." Leaving her finger marks under my daughter's arm from how hard she had pulled her. The school told me two different stories and none of them matched. The director and owner Shetal did absolutely nothing to protect other children and their safety as Kristen was never suspended or under any formal investigation. SHE IS STILL WORKING THERE. The director didn't even bother to look at the pictures during the first meeting with her and when she finally saw them by email she responded to me that they looked faded. Two weeks after they finally looked at the outside cameras because I asked for that, and found nothing other than Amy daughter just playing. Also, two weeks after other employees such as the social worker and HR were aware of what had happened. TWO WEEKS AFTER. And that was because I spoked to them. The pictures speak for themselves and my daughter's story does too. My daughter was so afraid and so blocked from what had happened as at home we don't do any physical damage. When I asked her why she didn't tell me some details sooner she responded: "Mom I didn't want Mrs. Kristen to be mad again." This is insane. This lady was cleaning tables when she saw my daughter giving water to her friend she proceeded to remove one of her gloves and pulled and grabbed my daughter so hard that she left her fingers marked on her skin. "It hurt mom. It hurt a lot and all I wanted was mom and dad." I'm disgusted by this situation and as a mother, this was definitely one of the hardest things I had ever gone through. The least thing a school should provide is safety and this school cannot even give you that. The Chief Investigator of the State Board of education was disgusted by this situation and in disbelief at the way this was handled by the director Shetal. I quote "These marks are severe and that woman who did them knew exactly what she was doing. Someone with this temperament cannot and should not be around children" Please keep your children safe and do not send them to this school who will never care for you as a parent or even as a human being.

The…read moreschool has been such a blessing to us, as we moved to Phoenix (from Oklahoma City) at the end of December 2017.  We were hoping to find a nurturing school home for our daughter and truly wanted a place that focused both on academics and a holistic, hands-on learning approach.  In addition, my mom has been a preschool director for over 30-years and has set the educational bar high, so we knew the questions to ask when looking for a new school.   Upon our first tour, my daughter and I knew this was the right spot for her Spring semester.  The class sizes are small, and the teachers are extremely nurturing; Emma Fominaya is an excellent director and teacher, and she truly prepares the kids for Kindergarten and beyond.  Both Emma & her husband, Terence, have poured their hearts, time, and hard word into building a school of high integrity.   Their food program is excellent, as they serve fresh, organic breakfasts and lunches to the kids.  They also incorporate the outside garden into the meals and include planting days with the preschool families.  We have had many opportunities to become a part of a supportive school community, and we have enjoyed getting to know the Fominayas and other preschool parents.   The before and after care is also extremely helpful, our daughter always insists on staying until 6:00pm--she absolutely loves her time at school and her teachers.  The schedule also goes year-round and doesn't follow breaks, which is helpful/important for working parents.  We also enjoy the consistency and the flexibility to map out attendance days, as we do a M/W/F schedule.   Overall, this school is worth every penny and an amazing place; we are so thankful we found Camelback Holistic...now if we can just talk them into offering Kindergarten, we never want to leave!

Why we love TFS: - Respect: The teachers care for, respect, and get to know the kids. Everyone is a friend. Discipline is framed around setting reasonable expectations and addressing unmet needs, not shaming, judging, or punishing. - Diversity: The kids and families are diverse in every way: racially, economically, family makeup, religion, etc. About half the families pay tuition, and half are on scholarship. - Democracy: As an example, the 2's class hosted a bake sale. In circle time they voted on what to do with the proceeds, and the class decided to make a music wall. They decided together how to decorate it (multi-color stripes) and sketched out the blueprint together. They donned smocks and gloves, and everyone helped paint the music wall. As a reminder, these are 2-year-olds. - Community: TFS hosts several family events each year, including a Stone Soup Luncheon before Thanksgiving, Friendship Festival around Valentine's Day, and Farm Day in the spring. We get to hang out with the other parents, learn the songs our kids are singing in class, and engage with the teachers beyond the usual harried dropoff and pickup. Deciding on a preschool is all about finding the right fit for your family. The Family School might not be the right fit for you if you want updates throughout the day on your phone. They send home a daily sheet with meals, diaper changes, and notes about what your child did that day. Your class might get a weekly email with photos and updates, but they don't have an app or texts like some other schools. The schedule can be a challenge for working families: the earliest dropoff is 7:30, and the latest pickup is 5:15. They're also closed for two weeks in the summer and several holidays, which can also be a challenge depending on your job. Each family is expected to volunteer 24 hours per school year (e.g. wash blankets, help out around the property, attend parenting classes, assist with the auction). Overall, I am so glad my daughter attends the Family School. When I'm at work I can focus on my job, knowing she is cared for and engaging in fun, developmentally appropriate activities. I don't know who's above her but they need to know how unprofessional she is. My daughter suffered an injury while her their care. No report filed until I notified them. Now they want photos and a doctor note as proof when it's all on camera.
