If you get to this part of Norway and are looking for a place to have a fine dining experience let…read morerecommend Kleivstua. You have to make reservations, but it is so worth it. We arrived during the week and were gently sent away as we had no reservations, but prior to leaving we made reservations for the upcoming Sunday evening (our last dinner in Norway). When that evening we arrived we were worried if we were given wrong information as the place looked deserted. When we entered we were warmly greeted by our host the owner Andy and told our table was waiting. Their dining room was a classic Norwegian treasure and the view...OMG!!! You could not have better ambience, just not possible. Plus, we had the place all to ourselves. We were their only guests that evening. We were told they had prepared a three course meal for us. Their dining room salad plate was mostly meat aged and fresh greens. Our main course was oven baked salmon with locally grown vegetables. And for dessert we had cream brûlée and sorbet. The wine we drank that evening was locally bottled. We even were treated to Apple juice also locally made. We were treated like kings and fed that way as well. Everything was delicious. Service was magnificent. The ambience second to none. I don't know if we will ever make it back to Norway, but if we do we will definitely return. I am giving our visit 5 stars but it deserves a TEN!!! Absolutely loved it!!! Thank you Andy!!! And thank you for the going away gifts.

The surroundings are fantastic with a majestetic view - you simply can't stay here without visiting the viewpoint "Kings view" (only ~1,5 km walk through the forest). The food served are delicious, being based on local foodproduction, and their oliveoil (ok....not that local based!) is the best EVER!! Book your seminars here; the snack serving is superb, the service too, and the athmosphere wonderful with old, traditional furniture and -buildings.

Louis, the concierge at the front desk, has been an amazing ambassador of the Thon Hotel brand. He welcomed us with a great smile and friendly disposition, and immediately placed himself at our service. He provided us with valuable information about transportation, the city, things to do in Oslo, Sandvika, and talked to us about other great cities to experience around all Norway. He has been a well of knowledge. The hotel itself is easy to access. It is only minutes away from the Sandvika Train station by Uber. It is also quite comfortable and clean. With a contemporary design the building stands out close to the Oslo waters. Once inside, the lobby is spacious, bright, and beautifully decorated with a magnificent marble sculpture. There's also a restaurant where the early morning breakfast is served, and what a breakfast. It consists of a magnificent buffet including smoked salmon, smoothies, omelets, bacon, sausage, and eggs in various other forms, fresh fruits, pancakes with different delicious jams, and so much more, all cooked in front of you my a magnificent team of chefs. The wait staff is also great. They keep the restaurant and the tables impeccably clean, and keep the coffee flowing. Again, their level of service was impeccable. If I could give the hotel staff 10 stars I would. They made our stay not just comfortable, but magnificent!

Room: Comfortable and sleek, like most Thon hotels in the area. Nothing really stands out, except that there were wifi issues in our room. Staff: Didn't interact with them very much, but no complaints. Breakfast: Meh. Just ok. Have had better tasting food at other hotels. Selection was ok, but had run out of some items. Dishes were not bussed very quickly. We ended up stacking our plates. Bottom Line: Wouldn't mind returning to the area because its a charming place for a walk, but may compare with other hotels in the area.

The cabs in Oslo are very expensive. Really friendly front desk staff! All their good work gets diluted when you have to experience their restaurant staff (except Vivien- who was a sweetheart), restaurant manager and food. if you are a vegetarian, you are screwed. if you are vegan, go somewhere else. I stayed there 6 nights- and looked at the same breakfast buffet and lunch buffet every day. Lunch for 4 days of the conference was exactly the same everyday- no change in menu and not too good (like a Country Buffet with fish). I had dinner one night- ordered gnocchi and Caesar salad- they forgot my salad and then gave the shoulder shrug, and general rudeness for forgetting. oh well! I let the front desk know about this, and the restaurant manager came out swinging aggressively going "hey- do you want to talk?" No apology for their attitude.... I figured it was probably his horrible energy that had let the food be so impacted, and his staff so rude. All Norwegians I met were simply gracious and welcoming. I think they took all the rude people in this country and put them here. Then there was the housekeeping!! 2 nights out of 6, I had to go down to the reception to request them for housekeeping when I returned to my room at 6pm. No one picks up the phone. No floor mats in the bathroom. No room coffee. soaps and shampoos are from wall mounted dispensers.

The breakfast was one of the better spreads we experienced in Norway during our 9 day trip. Lots of clean fluffy towels, great water pressure, nice hotel robes (I am a basic B!). Windows opened, thankfully, as they were having a heat wave and there is no A/C here so that was not ideal but at least they provided a fan which did help a bit.

The location couldn't have been better and we had only a short walk for our onward exploration in Norway. It was also close to the MUNCH museum as well as the opera house and very central for using the public transport to get around Oslo. The hotel itself is very up to date and our suite had all the expected amenities from power access to big modern bathroom. One complaint and I've seen this elsewhere in Europe, is your inability to control the temperature in your room. If you want it cooler you have to make a request to the front desk. Our room on the 6th floor was fairly large (by European standards) and was comfortable with a nice view to the train station. Our rate included the lavish breakfast buffet with loads of choices as well as a few made to order items like eggs Benedict and something I've never seen in Europe-bagels! A lovely stay except for the warm and stuffy room. Oddly they keep the hallways and other public spaces cooler. Be sure also to check out the fantastic hip cocktail bar-pier 42-in the lobby.
