Mini vacation trip to Fontana Village, NC for Miata's at the Gap at the beginning of August. After…read morethe first day of driving the Tail of the Dragon, I noticed one of the wheel studs on my 23 year old Mazda Miata was broken, and the lug nut was gone. Searched for a nearby tire shop, that would be open on Saturday. According to the googles, it *should* have been open at 8:00am. I arrived at the shop at 8:20am and it was closed, with no signs of opening at all on Saturday. I stopped by a convenience store to ask for another possibility, and they suggested Eller's Citgo. I drove up the street and found it, and pulled up. I asked the two gentlemen who were there, if they'd be able to help me, and they said sure. They called to the local auto parts store, got a new wheel stud and lug nut, delivered. We made small talk about cars, good driving roads, and listened to a few stories from them. Within 20 minutes I was ready to get back on the road. The amount they charged me, was incredibly low, and I settled my bill with a smile. It may not look like much from the outside, but Eller's Citgo has got it where it counts with their friendly people, quick service, and their extremely reasonable prices. That's where the Catamount Travel Center Cherokee Exxon in Whittier comes in. We stopped in to do exactly that: take a break from the road, restock supplies, and give our legs a reminder that they still worked. Mission accomplished. The store was relatively clean, well organized, and stocked with a good variety of snacks, drinks, and travel essentials. Even better, the prices were surprisingly reasonable compared to many convenience stores that seem to believe being located near a highway automatically qualifies them to charge airport pricing. One pleasant surprise was the selection of local wines. It's always nice when a travel center offers something that reflects the local area rather than the exact same inventory you can find at every interstate exit from Florida to Alaska. The staff was efficient, everything moved smoothly, and we were back on the road without any drama, confusion, or frustration. And honestly, that's a bigger compliment than it might sound. Travel centers aren't always trying to create unforgettable experiences. Their job is to provide convenience, and this one lived up to its name. Did it knock my socks off? No. Did I leave telling everyone I know about the life-changing convenience store experience I just had? Also no. But it was clean, reasonably priced, well stocked, and did exactly what I needed it to do. I spent most of the visit debating whether this was a three-star stop or a four-star stop.
