I booked my stay through Priceline, but I was supposed to pay when I got to the motel. They did not have my reservation when I got there. She was able to give me a room. The room had not been aired, so it was stale and musty smelling. I turned the air conditioner on immediately, which eventually helped some. The faded carpet was damp. There was a mini fridge, but it wasn't plugged in, so it took a while to get cold. The towels provided were stained with makeup from previous guests, and there was only one full sized towel. There were no toiletries of any kind provided. The bathroom floor was littered with dead flies. There were no hangers hanging from the rack that substituted for a closet. This was the cheapest option I could find for staying in Charles City, but it would have been worth it to pay a little more. I went to high school here in the early 1990's, and I don't think the rooms have been updated at all since then. It's too bad.

We were in town for a nearby running race, and choices for hotels in the area are slim. This seemed like a newer hotel, the same tier as Hampton Inns. Plenty of parking, though the woman at the front desk could have been friendlier. I'm always more concerned about the room quality though. And ours was clean and comfortable. We were only here for one night, but I would stay here again.

At the time I booked there were no king beds available. It's period appropriate, so maybe there aren't any here. We had a nice suite. 2 rooms and a bathroom. Great shower. Lovely room. The common areas are incredible. Just oozing with charm and character. If you're a FLW fan, this is Mecca. So much Prairie Style architecture in this town. So lovely. The staff is fantastic here. You also get a free homemade breakfast, and you can eat it outside on the large porch while watching the birds and cats. Examples of breakfast entrees served are a breakfast quiche, breakfast casserole, and french toast. The couple who owns the inn is friendly too, and they like to come over and chat while you're eating. Because of this, I added a star to the rating. Otherwise, I would not stay here. There is no internet access, free wi-fi, cell phone service, or even phone in the rooms. No amenities, such as shampoo, conditioner, razor, or soap, is provided. I think this is bad when you've been traveling on an airplane. You are provided access to a refrigerator (unlimited sodas and bottled water - though they ran out of water) and microwave. There really isn't housekeeping service. The trash cans are never emptied (really bad after you've been on a road trip), the bed is never made for you, sheets aren't changed during your stay, and towels are replaced every other day (it seems). The worst part of the stay though was the smell of hydrogen sulfide whenever you ran the water. Because of this, I won't stay here again. If someone takes a shower, the whole room smells like rotten eggs, and it's disgusting. The same applies to brushing your teeth. If you brushed your teeth and used the tap water instead of bottled water, you'd have this rancid taste in your mouth. Gross!

Sandy and I stayed here from 8/1/2018 through 8/11/2018 and loved every minute of it. Judy made a wonderful country breakfast every morning, and Dale pretty well stayed out of her way, while regaling us with History and stories of rural life gone by. It is a working farm, but the Mills take time to help us enjoy the hospitality. Also, ask Dale for a quick canoe trip, it absolutely makes the trip, and is is incredibly relaxing.

The decor is professional in a style you might call rural Americana but without quilts. Most of the walls are painted sage green and the outlet and switch covers match. The beds were firm, probably vintage, and reasonably comfortable. The bathroom has lovely multicolor granite tiles and a vintage table for a vanity. Don't be surprised if the floor in your room tilts - this place is old! When we stayed, the pillows could have used a refresh. And I'm not sure what the housekeeping schedule is, but we stayed three nights and there was no towel/turn-down service in that time. I'm reluctantly taking a star off for these two factors. The service is friendly, professional, and responsive. When we had a question but no one could answer the phone, they saw that we had called and called us right back!
