Even though you'd think we had the birthing process down by now, there are so many variables! The doulas we'd hired previously had moved out of state or were no longer practicing, so we checked in with our midwife and birth assistant for recommendations. That's how we found Nurturing Birth Doulas. We met virtually and knew right away they'd be a good fit. Working together as a team, Brenda and Whitney both demonstrate a clear passion for childbirth and being an advocate for the birthing mother, and a teammate and coach for the expecting father/partner. They provided numerous resources, asked us great questions, and helped us talk through some of the scenarios we might need to prepare for. They were very easy to communicate with and especially helped when I started having increased back pain late in the third trimester (see picture). When the time for birth came, Brenda met us promptly at the Birth Center. When my labor stalled, she talked me gently through my frustration. As soon as we all decided to take a rest for awhile, my labor ramped back up and off we went. Brenda was there stepping in to provide support for both my husband and me when needed. After the birth, she stayed until we were settled, well past midnight. She then visited a few days later to check on how we were doing and graciously navigated our older kids' meltdown. Although our birth and pregnancy ended up relatively uncomplicated and quick, and was not in a hospital, we really appreciated the peace of mind Brenda and Whitney provided us. They made themselves available to us in just the right way - not pushy about anything, very supportive, and providing evidence-based feedback on decisions we needed to make. We are grateful we found them and they were there to help us bring our son into the world! We definitely recommend this team to anyone looking for doula support.

Teachers and classmates became a second family for my child, and families were really encouraged to get to know each other through events and gatherings. We loved the balance between structure and free play and really felt like Little Owlets prepared my daughter very well socially and knowledge-wise for kindergarten - the transition to elementary school was a breeze. My child LOVED the Montessori-inspired activity time and still talks about it. And there were so many creative and fun activities - cooking, yoga....We loved that outdoor time was emphasized in all but the worst weather and the kids got in quality outside play and exercise time. When my sleep study was complete, my follow-up appointment was with a nurse, but the discussion felt more like a sales presentation than a medical consultation. The focus was almost entirely on selling me a CPAP machine, even after I explained that I wasn't interested in CPAP therapy. When I asked about alternative treatments, the conversation ended. I was told that someone would contact me to discuss other therapy options, but they ghosted me.

Clear Symptoms Completely Dismissed: No Diagnosis, No Treatment…read more I saw Dr. Monica Mannan when I was 19 in college for primary amenorrhea -- I had never had a period in my life -- along with insulin resistance, and other classic pcos symptoms. I was worried and didn't know what was wrong, and I paid privately because insurance would not cover the visits. Dr. Mannan ordered extensive testing, including large blood panels (around 10 vials in one draw), urine tests, screening for Cushing's, a pelvic ultrasound, and more. After all of that, she told me my hormones were "normal," said she didn't know what was wrong, and suggested the NIH. No clear referral was provided, no diagnosis was made, and no treatment options were offered. For a young patient with obvious symptoms, the lack of follow-through or basic clinical care was shocking. A few years later an OB-GYN diagnosed PCOS almost immediately and started treatment that finally initiated my first menstrual cycle. That was medically important because going many years without menstruation increases endometrial cancer risk, something that was never addressed during my care with Dr. Mannan. I am now older and still upset about this experience and the lack of PCOS awareness from an endocrinologist. I lost years dealing with symptoms that should have been treated much earlier. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this doctor.
