I found Smack on Yelp when my friend Marita was a patient at nearby Vanderbilt University Medical Center and wanted something comfy to wear. I live in the Dallas area, and she didn't have friends or family nearby who could bring her clothes, so I was trying to find something I could have a courier pick up and deliver. I talked to Rob, who wasn't actually in Nashville that day, but did a mental review of the store and said that he didn't really think he had what I was looking for. He was really nice and said when he was back in town he'd be happy to help if I still needed it. I thought that was a lovely gesture, but moved on to a quicker solution and dismissed it. So naturally, I was surprised to get a call from Rob a few days later, asking how my friend was doing and offering to go to another store, get something comfy and take it to her at the hospital. Now how nice is that? Amazing! You really have to patronize this store just because he's such a nice person! Naturally, when I arrived in Nashville a week or so later, I made a point of going by to thank Rob personally for his concern. And it was then I fell in love with his store! It's fun and full of the almost theatrical vintage I love, with a distinct country western flair. Lots of fringe, sequins, boots, belts and bolo ties, some from decades you may not remember! The day I was there, Rob had a Nudie suit that had been owned by Merle Haggard. If I lived in the Nashville area I would be a regular - and apparently a lot of local musicians and artists are too. If you want something unique, kitschy or dramatic (that you definitely won't find at TJ Maxx!), this is the place to come. And as a bonus, you get to buy it from a genuinely nice guy! read more

AMAZING VINTAGE SHOP! This is one of the few vintage shops I have been to that has tons of amazing merchandise while still offering great value to customers. They have a diverse collection that spans through the past 3-4 decades, you'll get a kick out of it just walking through and picturing yourself in a movie montage. They have tons of stuff from the 80's & 90's, there is no chance anyone that walks in here can't find something they like! The prices are so reasonable you'd almost call it a thrift shop! read more

Very cool store. Probably way too hip for someone like me, who tends to err on the more preppy side! But, as I've said before, I can dream can't I?! It's a small space, but chock full of funky "rock" clothes. Once, fresh from attending a "fake Bon Jovi" (Slippery When Wet) show, stopped in here the next day and bought myself two very rock star-ish t-shirts. And wore them proudly. Only to be laughed at by my friends, since it's totally not my style! Again, pipe dreams...! Seriously though, Smack does have some crazy, funky, cool attire for sale. Checked this place out for the first time today. I love the exterior of the building and the inside is pretty rad as well. The shop had a good vibe and I saw a lot of neat things. Sadly, I didn't find anything I couldn't live without, but I like to admire fashion from a far sometimes more than really dive into it anyhow. They had a lot of neat jewelry in the cases, though I wish I could have seen the prices. I hate having to ask because it makes me feel pressured. I'm kind of awkward, but maybe next time I'll just go ahead and ask because I'm still thinking about the cute necklace I saw haha The downstairs was lush with clothing and accessories. A fun place to go with a friend or while out on a bit of an adventure/date, which I was, with my guy. When we got upstairs we loved the fancy seating area and struck a few poses on the couch. We danced around the dress racks a bit... We were feeling it haha. There was a good overall vibe. Even though we didn't purchase anything, I'm sure we'll be back. I walked in and saw the giant discoball and the style of the store, i knew i was in the right place! So glad I found this place!! The range is great here. Such unique jackets, dresses, button-ups, and t shirts. I saw some really unique bags in here as well. The prices were fair ($12-$40 is the average range) and the dressing rooms are open thankfully!! The location is cool too. It's super close to buffalo exchange and Three Brothers Coffee is down the street, so it's such a great stop. I could spend hours in here. Don't miss this one!! read more

I LOVE THIS STORE! I am shocked to be the first reviewer, as this store is actually very popular among fashion stylists for the music industry in Nashville from country to rock. Unlike most of the fashion boutiques in Nashville which carry mostly preppy casual, Smack carries very unique clothing as well as brands though some better known I have seen are Monarchy, Salvage and some popular jeans brands. I would call them sort of "rockstar cool" brands. They have also like Triple Five Soul, etc. They do carry some of the more common boutique brands too, though most of the stuff looks very unique for Nashville. The small two floor store was very stylishly designed by the owner personally. The owner himself can often be seen working in the store personally. The store is tucked in a small but fashionable area called Elliston Place which is on the other side of Vanderbilt from Hillsboro Village, another street with a few boutique stores. Elliston Place is sometimes called Nashville's "Rock Block" because there are several live music bars nearby. Down the street there is a day spa, a couple of cool restaurants, and Nashville's only privately owned 24/hr cafe called Cafe Coco (on a side street) that is popular with the Vanderbilt students and young club crowd (on weekends). read more

Smack is a clothing shop for the country style rocker! They sell plaid button down shirts by the dozen, they had rude boy checkered hats, and even girlie rocker plaid shirts. The look of this store is distinctly western rock dude or girly. So if that is your look, you will love it. The staff is pretty hands off, and somehow manages to say hello as you walk through the store. Smack has a lot of denim and even some faux leather jackets. The thing to do is go straight to the second floor which they call the "sale room." Here you can find all the same brands for a huge discount. They sell a lot of clothing by the "Miss Me" brand. I saw several pairs of jeans marked down to about $20 upstairs. They also have some cute party dresses, and upstairs you can get them for under $60. read more

I appreciate Smack's attempt to be a bit hipper and trendier than a lot of the clothing stores in the area, even if it means they often err on the way too out there side. The price range is what keeps me from being a regular browser, but as Sharon mentioned there are great deals to be had if you're willing to comb through the sale section. Another good place to find lower prices is in the accessories. They occasionally mix in some jewelry or bags that are in a much more accessible price range while still maintaining all the fun of their overall collection. On one of my first trips in there I found a great pair of silver star dangle earring for under $20, and they're one of the most-complimented pieces of my wardrobe. read more

This place is tragic. You are able to find much more "fashionable" items at a local TJ Maxx (I love me some TJ's) I used to shop here a lot in 2007-08 (mostly for dresses and such) and I have no idea what has happened. The walls are covered in Affliction type t-shirts and dresses that looked like they were unable to be sold off of a Wet Seal sale rack. The handbags all looked like knock-off designer bags. Imagine the horror as I brought a girlfriend here the other day that had never been. We left laughing and were still laughing about it later in the evening. No parking available but there are plenty of meters on the street. read more

I always wondered where all the country rocker types walking around Nashville got their clothes, and then I walked into Smack. With rhinestoned crosses and skulls galore, this place must call out to someone, not me, but I have seen you walking around with leather bracelets, tight jeans, snakeskin dress shoes, and Ed Hardy like button downs. Clearly, this place is not my bag of chips, but I will say that if you head upstairs you will find some good deals on going out dresses and even some great shoes on sale. I really like this store - it's packed with vintage of late and I've found some really great things here at a great price! The guy who runs it is cool, nice and helpful. I got a couple of glittery 70's tee shirts here that I'm obsessed with and I found the exact perfect silk robe that I was looking for for my boyfriend. You may have to do some digging to find your treasure. They don't have their own lot so parking is slightly annoying - but you can probably just park behind the IHOP if you don't have change for the meters...or just don't wanna pay to park. It's fun to go in here and shop, then check the racks at Buffalo Exchange - THEN pop into Krispy Kreme for a doughnut and maybe some coffee. Smack is all about rock 'n roll and glamour: Mexican art-influenced rhinestones T-shirts and tanktops, risque halter dresses, tops with holes cut in the shoulders, designer jeans, But there are a lot of interesting dresses and tops here for people with a subtler, less flashy look who still like to wear edgy or unusual clothes. Smack is a big store, so they manage to offer a good selection of various youthful styles. I thought the eclecticism of the store was a really neat feature, because it allows shoppers who enjoy different looks to mingle and try new styles. While I was looking around Smack, I saw as many men shoppers as women, which struck me as kind of unusual. But their selection of men's clothes is about as wide as the women's section, so I guess that makes sense. Although the new, in-season items at Smack are pretty expensive ($30-$40 tops, etc.), they have some really good sales: $12 skirts, $30 dresses...I got a high-quality linen retro print dress there on sale for just $17. The staff here is really nice - I saw a staff member patiently bringing another customer dress after dress, and chatted with the woman at the register about the Sesame St. video she had on. My only complaints about Smack are logistical - they only have three dressing rooms, which means that in the middle of the afternoon during the week I had to wait for one to open (I don't even want to know what the wait is like on the weekends!), and they don't have a scanner, so check-out takes longer than usual because the cashier has to record the code for each item you're purchasing by hand. Overall though, possibly my favorite clothing store in Nashville thanks to the interesting and varied selection and the great sales. read more

I love Smack Clothing's clothing store. Although pricy, you are really finding one of a kind clothing that no department store is going to carry or if they do, you are really going to have to dig. I feel like Smack is a hit or miss depending on their seasons-sometimes I go in and leave with four bags, but other times I find nothing. I actually did not notice this place when I was looking up vintage in Nashville. I am currently a tourist visiting my sister here when my mom suggested this spot to us. We decided to go in and have a look. I saw many denim jackets of various brands, such as Levi's or Wrangler or Guess. I saw a lot of velvet upstairs, including a pretty red velvet dress from Bergdorfs. I even saw some fur coats. The real winner of the search was a dress I did not even buy, a Thierry Mugler dress for an insanely affordable price. Mugler has not designed anything in 15 years and is still being worn by many celebs. I have always loved his work and to see such a gorgeous dress of his was a treat. My sister bought a pair of pants that fit perfectly that she became obsessed with and the staff working at the time was very kind. Please someone go buy this dress. I guarantee you will feel and look like a million dollars. read more

I have passed the store in the past but being a curvy girl I've never stopped in because I assume their clotes are for smaller inviduals. Well they had a dress in the window that made me stop in and I've been back twice now to find chic clothing for my smaller younger sister and accessories for me!! Their sale racks are wonderful and the staff is the same. The sales lady went out of her way to help me find a birthday dress for my sister and "Papa Smack" was ready for me when I checked out! I first found Smack when I was dress hunting for my sister's wedding, she had very specific requests, and I had looked basically everywhere for a dress that fit her description. The closest thing I found that matched what she wanted was a designer dress that cost over $200 which was far beyond my budget. Enter the hero... I found the dress I needed at a very reasonable price at Smack. They were friendly and very helpful, and held the dress for me while I shopped other stores. I've since been in the store mulitple times for little gifts, for my friends, myself, and even my boyfriend. I managed to find a piece that he really resonated with, and if you are one who looks for things that speak to you, you know that's hard to find. I love Smack, it's eccentric without being over the top and unaccesable, while maintaining reasonable prices. The owner is so personable, we love going in and browsing the store and honestly, just talking to Rob. He has a creative eye and good taste...and I'm excited to see what the new store is going to look like! This is probably my favorite place in Nashville to shop for dresses. Their selection is great - from pretty standard cocktail dresses to fare that is probably more well suited to a concert with a wide selection of more casual daytime dresses. The staff is helpful and really excited about the clothing. They stayed open late for us one night so a friend could get a dress for a special evening (we had spent the whole day combing the town for the "perfect" dress) and were super sweet and helpful the whole time without ever pressuring us to hurry.
