I had a really great conversation with Tommy the owner about music and his shop! The store has every rock band you can possibly think of on its walls and racks. We really enjoyed looking around in here and we found some cool things, but they were all way too expensive for OUR budget. Just because something is too expensive for your personal budget doesn't mean it's overpriced. However, $100 for a band tshirt, that I just purchased at a thrift store back home in po-dunk Alabama for $3, is too much for me. Nonetheless, we still stop here every time we come to Nashville. Just walking through the shop gives me an amazing hit of Dopamine and Serotonin that makes my ADHD heart happy and full. My husband did find some great vinyl records on this trip though and they were a great price. We did experience the alleged "following," but we did not interpret it that way or in any negative way. It just seemed like the employees wanted to make themselves available in each room in case we had questions about the merchandise. People seem to just need something to complain about these days. We will continue to stop in here and enjoy all the vintage music goodness and leave happy! read more

Every time we're in Nashville, we can't help popping in here to browse. We love looking through the albums. The rest of the store is stocked with vintage clothing, including some rare band and concert t-shirts. A person can get lost in all the jeans, jackets, shirts and shoes. I don't go into a store like this expecting low prices. True vintage items don't come cheap. That being said, there are some more affordable choices. Price gouging, was in Nashville visiting a close friend and we went to see this store, although Tommy here will likely shout "fake" because he is incapable of taking criticism. This is gentrification to the nth degree, and it's funny to see someone charging 400 dollars for a T-shirt that other vintage stores would charge about 20 for. Update: Tommy literally proved me right and shouted fake review. This is what going on an ego trip looks, like folks. He even has the audacity to claim that I wasn't there in February despite me living fairly close to Tennessee, considering I'm in Kentucky. Stopped in here hoping to find a cool band t-shirt. What I found was most shirts (even for bands who are still active and touring) north of $100, many of which had holes. I even saw one for $600. For a t-shirt! The store smelled old and musty. I'm willing to drop some money for cool clothes, but hundreds for a shirt with holes that you can find new at another store for $30 is not a logical or sustainable business model. read more

Great selection of just about everything, but definitely out of my price range. I was happy just to be in there and look around. While I do love vintage gear and accessories, I would be more inclined to go picking myself for that type of stuff. Plus, paying $100+ for a T-shirt is not something that coincides with my values as a human. I do appreciate their selection though, and being a vintage picker myself, I know how much time and effort that probably went into making Black Shag possible. All that being said, I am not the demographic of a store like this. The staff was extremely friendly and let me look around without feeling pressured to purchase anything, which was nice. If you are in the area, I would highly recommend you check them out. I've been popping in for years whenever I'm in Nashville and I don't remember them being quite this expensive as the last the couple times I've been in. I would often pick up a couple of things but now a couple years later, I just can't justify the prices. Also of the owner Tommy is in, it's great, he's friendly and knowledgeable. If he's gone and you get one of his shop girls, it can be hit or miss. Some of them are sweet and helpful but other make you feel like you're inconveniencing them for asking a question. Now well known for super rare concert tees and great vintage pieces! Stylists and costumers for film and other media know they can find what they are looking for at BSV. The shop is well organized and the employees are friendly and very knowledgeable. The pricing, especially for rare items is based on worldwide market value and might surprise you but collectors know what they are looking for. Prices seem to range from $10 up and unless noted, are in very good condition. An excellent pair of boyfriend jeans nicely broken in was only $25! I love this store! I even shop there unlike some of the posters I've seen here. There are some shirts it the shop are absolutely drool worthy and in some cases extremely rare! If you don't want to pay for something Original, perhaps Hot Topic may be a better fit (nothing wrong with that btw). This is not a Thrift store, they already did that part. Now you have a curated collection of Vintage Clothes, Jewelry, Records and a great aesthetic to go with it. I think if you actually walked into the store and met the owner and staff, you would think differently. They are kind and quite knowledgeable. I've also seen posts about bootleg or parking lot tees as well. In most cases they can actually carry quite a bit more value. Well I'm going to continue to buy the things I can't find myself. (Like my killer Vintage Denim Jacket Finding a Denim jacket that fits and has the exact look you want is a hard thing to find. I found one there after 20 years of looking. I don't know the owner, I just briefly met him while I was there shopping, but Black Shag is the coolest store I've ever been in. And I've been a rock fan, a musician, a small business owner, and an antiques dealer here in Atlanta for over 25 years. You cannot underestimate the amount of time and effort that it takes to accumulate and stage a collection like this. Some of these haters on here, I don't understand it. If you want to spend dozens of hours going through the racks at Goodwill stores for a million-to-one chance of finding an old concert shirt for $3, go right ahead (I have). He had to go out there and find this stuff. No easy task. It didn't just magically appear in his racks. This place is a celebration of rock n roll, and while I'm not a $200 t-shirt kind of guy, I thoroughly enjoyed his store so much that while I was in town, I went two days in a row. I intentionally bought some vinyl from him to buy just to put a couple of dollars in his pocket and support what he's doing. America used to have tons of Moms and Pops like this. Now every city in America looks the same- the same old corporate stores everywhere. Not that I don't shop at those too, but it's places like this that made/make America great. Most of you people throwing shade on this guy probably think nothing about going to a Target or a mall store and throwing down $200 (on junk). My only advice for the owner is, stop giving these people any attention. They obviously don't know anything about business. Supply and demand dictates price points. If you don't like the $250 price tag on the old Ozzy shirt, don't worry about it. The price will eventually drop if it's overpriced. Otherwise, visit, enjoy browsing, and if it's not for you, move on. When that shirt's not there the next time you come in, that's probably because somebody bought it. If he's been there for 3 years, I guarantee you his rent has probably doubled since he moved in over there. If it hasn't, it certainly will when his lease is up. His labor costs have doubled in that time frame too. If you want businesses like these to exist, you have to be intentional about supporting them. Being in business is tough.
